If they aren't a good singer, then you can't tell much.

I do have someone else sing first if I think they don't mind being a guinea pig. If they are picky, I would prefer to have things dialed in on myself.

I usually do the first song and then put myself out, once the rotation hits 10 singers, which happens usually within the first hour.

I only do this, because I have some "regular (real regular) regulars" that can't hold a note in a bucket and they're usually the first ones to arrive. Even before me sometimes. And I really don't want to torture the rest of the crowd with them singing back to back.

If the night was not too busy, I sing the last song. Otherwise I let somebody else do it. Some people have really a lot of patience waiting for their turn, even late.

I sing the first song of the night. I do this so that I can do a Sound Check in the place. After that, I will keep myself in the Rotation until I have enough people to sustain the show on its own (I usually drop out when I have at least 7 or 8 singers in the Rotation).

I do sing, but not in the rotation...persay

I also (almost) never sing the 1st or last song of the night. For the 1st song, I'm not a great singer so, me adjusting myself is pointless. At the last song of the night, I'll give that to someone that has been waiting. I throw myself in when there is a good spot to do so, like to change the tempo or keep the tempo up. Other than that..it's customer's choice...:)

I've got wireless mics, so it works fine for me. If I think it sounds good while I'm singing, then the next singer that comes up should feel the same. It may not be a perfect adjustment, but a good KJ/DJ is constantly making adjustments for each singer anyway. Rather than blasting them with a bunch of noise prior to starting, I think it's better to make adjustments and entertain at the same time. The first patron singer I think appreciates it. It's not like we're soundchecking for a full band or anything, and it shouldn't be the first time you've ever used the equipment, so it will probably sound close to how it was left.

Anyway, now I'm off on a tangent.....

I do more tweaking after I sing. I'll go back and forth from the board and the audience the first few songs to make sure things sound right. Even though I'm in the same venue 3 nights a week I still have to make adjustments. The settings depend on weather, amount of people in the bar and if the windows and doors are open. It really makes a difference. :D

Wow, wouldn't the job be easier if we could just set it and forget it? Every song is different, every singer is different, and yes, doors open/closed make a difference, heat being on makes a difference, and most assuredly the number of people in the place makes a difference. I tweak every single singer, sometimes often during one song. Some sound good with a vocal delay, others with a plate, etc., and I do change vocal effects for every singer as well. I adjust highs, mids, and lows on each person, too. Some singers are very generic and require little, especially the good singers, but in order to get those marginal singers sounding best, I stand there and make it work. I know they appreciate it because often they say, "Gosh, I don't sound this good at such-and-such a place."

I know how to set my own voice (I have a VERY strong, penetrating voice which often scares hosts in a new place LOL) and hubby's voice (he's very fussy and almost deaf from too many years of fronting bands), and I'm pretty quick on the regulars, but new singers always take a little extra time.

Sorry for the hijack.

I think it is what makes the job fun. I love being able to make a small adjustment and go Wow that really made a difference. It's taking pride in what you do. I totally agree Karen.

I am proud to be a member of the "KJ Tweakers Club" LMAO

Only as the first song of the night.

Only if its a slow night.

And only once late in the evening to sing a dance song--sort of a seventh inning strech to get em up out of thier seats and get the blood flowing a bit and get them sweaty and thirsty from dancing to get them to buy more drinks. :)

I do the first to dial in a baseline for the mic's. I'll rotate through all of them before handing them out in a single track. I use wireless exclusively, I don't know how I did without the wireless before. Hosts don't sing own song after around 10 in the rotation. There are exceptions when everyone's singing slow depressing stuff.
