I hover about 13 k and am very proud of my collection. When I get new I might delete some. Very few dups just different manus on a few favorites. Every song has the same name format IE Patsy Cline - Crazy(SC) Most are sound choice and THM the last few years.

100 new not on ths list

When a KJ has an illegal collection the books are screwed up and has many dups.

I have almost 500 CDG's=to about 7500 songs with a minimum of dupes. When I do KJ these days I augment that with what the bar already has(I bring my own books and put them out along with the bar's). Combined it makes for a pretty kick-azz selection of titles---and if a person can't find something they like and can have a good time with-then there must be something seriously wrong with them. Once in awhile someone brings thier own discs and if they are really scratched we let them know that they might not play. If I dont have it or the bar doesnt then we write it down and put it on the next disc order.

All terribly old-school, but all terribly LEGIT and LEGAL(the two L'S)!!.

Plus dont have to maintain any puter equipment and train any and all new KJ trainees that they might hire.

So all around it suits me just fine and works more than well. Both lasers and cdg with capabilty of DVD if he situation arises.

We are MORE than competitive and FUN-HAVING than most of the "200,000 song" places.

So yes you can be plenty competetive and successeful without having a BAGILLION song assortment. Most of that will never even get looked at, much less sung or asked for over the life of the disc or show. Besides its all a matter of the skill of the KJ to produce an enjoyable evening for the guest and not about how many hundreds or thousands of songs you have.

400,000.....wow, it's a good thing they're digital. That would be a real hastle hauling in the cd books...hmmmmmmmmm my huge ones are 327, so that's 3 for 1k x's 10 per cd, that's like 120 books. The table would be huge! And lets not even go into the 1000 page books, that would be just massive! Hahhaha, what a joke......MrD

Im from down south and been going to karaoke all over and seems when they have a huge number like that it is a mix of kj and dj material. I have not seen anyone who has had as many song as I have down here. I only have a little over 21,000 all legal. But it has enterained my bar 4 nights a week for 4 yrs. I have all ceterified music and a member of BMI. Its made me alot of money but has cost me alot also.

Lonnie has those, and so do I (although I'm missing a couple in the pop/rock range and five in the country 2xxs)

Do you still take them to shows, and use them?

I recall seeing them years ago and being in awe. Shiny!

I still use them nightly. The Pioneers actually have some great renditions of most songs. When I tried to phase them out about 10 years ago to replace with cdg, customers started complaining they didn't like the replacement & wanted the laser version. People get used to what they learn with, so I let it be. I could probably get away with it if I tried to change over now since no one uses them anymore around here - most might prefer the cdg versions today. I think I am about the last one to use them, but there is no point in spending a bunch to replace a good 'core' selection - with some songs that can't be acquired anymore so I won't bother. Just need to get them all converted down to a video file for playback on the computer.

If I bring my wife to your show, Lon, I hope you will have Blue Bayou for her to sing. We can't wait to see that one.

Wow, I mean - weren't they a little unwieldly, and the payers take a fair bit of looking after (assuming they are out of production)?

How many tracks did a disk hold?

I remember those huge discs. They were supposed to be the next big thing during the time when eight-tracks were still in use. Similar to the laser movie discs, they usually had great videos along with the lyrics on screen. Must have cost a lot to produce and direct them, hiring actors and such.

These discs bring back such lovely memories, does anyone one know how with out purcasing the player and discs, I could watch the Video's again? Have they been remastered? crosses fingers and hopes.

I have two milk crates of the old LaserDiscs, 1 of album-sized (mostly Pioneers) and 1 of Pioneer single-sized (only 4 songs per disc).
I bring them for every show and most have held up well. They are physically much more durable than CDGs. Pioneer's music is/was great, and the videos are usually entertaining (if not downright unintentionally hilarious). It seems like a lot were shot in and around Manhattan; I've seen a few good glimpses of the Twin Towers, a little eerie.
The biggest drawback I find with the LaserDiscs is that they are heavier than lead to haul. Incredibly heavy.
If/when I ever go to computer, I'd love to rip these, but how would I do that? Those are not mp3 files, I have no idea.

The original Pioneer had 14 songs on each side, and the original ones were dual sided. They also had some W-series that had 10 and 12 songs but were only single-sided.

And yes, they were very unweildy for a mobile unit (although an ex buddy of mine made a WONDERFUL guerny (sp) with a full setup and two players). Most of your permament locations had the libraries with pop-out sliders. A single rack of those would hold 20... and there was one that held 50.

We use the old Pioneers also and they are a pain to carry and there is a big lag time between when you push play and they get going--they take a bit of time to load. But we already had them and they gave a boost to our library. Sometimes the videos of women in bathing suits distract the male singers, however, and they lose their place. The males in them are another story.

The other advantage to the Pioneers is that the player actually works as opposed to the "modern" one we keep sending back to the manufacturer.

We are getting by with all of 3,000 songs (just starting out) and then adding what customers request as we go. We have a few custom discs with songs the regulars like to do and some nights I think they never leave the player. So if we had 400,000 songs, 399, 975 of them would be gathering dust each night. But we are starting to get in some people who appreciate that we are buying new songs.

Well just like any player or piece of equipment, it should have regular maintenence & cleanings. I get mine done every 6 months or so & have 4 back up players - as they are out of production.
Each disc - well the double sided - holds 28 songs.

Pioneer still has the V888 out, so there is still a production player out on the market!
