I recent contacted Zoom to see if they were going to come out with High School Musical 3 on Karaoke and they said that Disney object to them doing HSM 1 & 2 so ..no ...however they did say they might come out with a few of the tracks from the show..like anything else time will tell

Disney objected? Didn't Disney license it out?

Disney turned a cheaply made "for-tv" movie into a huge franchise by whoring it out like never before.

Well since Disney is authoring their own karaoke discs now (or at least licensing to one company only), I would understand why it's a no no for other companies.

The way the UK laws are they can make individual songs from a show/artist but they can not make a disk that has more than a portion of the songs from a single artist/show on a single disk without approval.

That means for zoom if they want to make for example 15 songs from HSM 3 they would have to put 5 songs on each of 3 different disks and mix them with 10 other songs....

Not too much of a problem for KJs to get the 3 disks if we really want them, and if Zoom decides to make all of the desired songs....

BUT disney does a pretty good job of doing their own karaoke recently with the origional tracks...

From MCPS

:

Products are subject to prior approval where;

the product title, packaging or advertising names or depicts featured artists or groups and/or featured composer(s)/writer(s)
the product includes content depicting an artist(s) associated with the tracks (unless clearance from their management has been obtained)
the product features more than 5 tracks either by the same artist/band or written by one composer or writer, or song writing partnership

Does that mean if you download legal mp3g from zoom like from mp3gstore.com you can only download 5 songs to put on you system?

No only that the laws were written for CDs and not downloads.....

Since the CD/DVD is still a major portion of the Karaoke sales and probably a majority companies like ZOOM are going to make CDs and then possibly later sell the tracks individually.

Only a few companies seem to be download first (like SBI).

But in the past some of the custom disks you could get made from the UK had a limit of 5 tracks from any one artist, probably still the case.

In that situation you would have to buy a few disks and mix up songs to get a bunch of songs from a single artist in custom disks.

Zoom was the first company I think to allow downloads. Unsure if they still do or not. They USED to do it 128kbps, and there were some complaints about that!
