I think we've been down this path many times before. Contests??? Well, I guess they can serve a useful purpose- contests theoretically will bring in ringers to sing for free.
If a contest can be judged strictly on established judging criteria, and not audience participation, then maybe they can be fair (of course, we know there is NEVER any politics involved when judging any sort of competition  )
All I can say is good luck on holding contests. If there is ever a competition where a classical singer can compete on an even playing field with pop and rock singers (meaning what they sing will not prove to be any sort of benefit or deterrent as to how its scored) that will be the day that I believe contests will actually be considered fair- and thus will give credence to holding contests.

Vocal ability: Tone Color , Focus, Placement, breath support..ect Judging for the vocal is too technical. I have run SEVERAL (more than i'd like to count) contests over the years & this is pretty much the case in all of them. Just get judges that at least are in the music industry in some manner. Vocal judging, if you want it more complicated than most, just go with the basics, pitch, timing, tone. Even that is too much IMO. TTTOOOOO Technical...no offense but you got to be kidding...singing is Technical..Im sorry but being a vocal major in college ..i would rather see someone win on tech then anything else..to many people win for aud resopnse which by the way is******** to say it simply. as a DJ I also see it as my job to try to help those who i can become better singers..sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt..but if we dont challenge the singers they are never going to grow. Over the last few years Ive seen several fair singer become pretty good... No not kidding at all otherwise I would have put in a  .
Karaoke should be about having fun, if someone is worried about being critiqued in such a manner - and I would still question ANYONE that could judge in such a manner & understand it all because unless you are getting judges with only professional training in vocal teachings/coachings, I would call BS, they should go test themselves & most likely be shot down in a first trial of American Idol! I never said use audience response, actually I agreed with that, I haven't used that in the 15 years of running contests - all my contests I have ran have been on vocal & performance values only - more on vocals but a good performance could be the make or break! The majority of the contestants - more than likely - are not going to be your regulars anyway or even likely to become your regulars. They don't care, they are contest hoppers, they go where the money is, once yours is over, they are out of there! I think one way contests can be succesful is if it was a "TRAVELLING" show.
In a venue that does NOT have regular karaoke if advertised properly and well in advance with a decent PRIZE award a venue can CLEAN UP on a contest night.
Of course all contestants must be money spending customers NO WATER DRINKERS or loiterers

What's wrong with heart and just the joie d'vie of singing! Spirit and putting your "all" into your performance is better than technical purity. There are very few technically pure singers. Being a vocal major means nothing. I know a lot of people eho have degrees who suck at what they do.

Water drinkers? Have the bar charge for the water. Or make them buy a soft drink.

Here is a variant on the usual contest theme. Suppose you had two events, one where the contestant sings their own song, and one where they all have to sing the same song. Then average out the two scores.
Now suppose you have two contestants who are very nearly matched. Which song would they have to sing to break the tie? Someone that can nail a ballad can't necessarily naile or rock song or country song.

Ive done one running regular type karaoke contest..hopefully never again. normal contests bring in to many people who think they are great, and most get offended when they find out they aren't. it's a pain in my azz and causes everyone involved headaches.
I also had a couple of fund raiser contests this year for the local domestic violence shelter. I enjoyed that one. it cost $5 min to enter and voting was $1 per vote for your favorite singer. no limit on how many times somebody can vote.singer can pay a larger donation to get more votes. the winner got 10% of money raised. most times they turn it down. Next year im going to try to get some donated prizes. Local contests are run at bars all over the county. and next year we also hope to get the finals at the county fair.
I think an option needs to be added to the poll for zero, It seems most here agree about contests
