This is a good discussion, and all of you bring up some good points. IMO, like abortion, it's a moral issue. If someone feels comfortable spending nothing, then there probably is nothing you can say to change their mind. You probably don't need a reason to ask them to leave, but if the law is involved, I'd suggest you make something up rather than stating a lack of spending as the crime....... :)

Johnny, Loitering is a crime. If they are not spending money they are loitering.

Right. I don't care if you have an entire bar full of the greatest singers in the world, if they're not out-spending your costs to the bar, you will be out.... otherwise it's a losing proposition for the club.

I'd much rather have a club full of people who are there to have a good time and perhaps sing a song too.... but the karaoke must be secondary.

If you have a club full of "performers" who are more interested in their performance and are keeping an eagle-eye on your rotation, because the karaoke is foremost in their minds, then they're usually not spending squat.

Chip, my foremost singer who pays the most attention to my rotation, is up to the mike before I call him, drinks like a fish. Not just beer, but mixed drinks and shots.

They can be there too and even add to things, but if they dominate, you are sunk.

But you ain't going to shame anyone into it -- it is stupid to try. And shaming them about not drinking is really, really, bad in my opinion.

Good lord. Never once when I've been the dd (or just had a night I'm not drinking for one reason or another)... NEVER once had a bar owner get upset about it. There are nights I spend plenty, but some nights I've went in and not spent a dime. (because they'll usually give me my soda or water for free, knowing I'm the dd)

And not just my regular hangouts... I've been to other places and not imbibed. Of course, I'm usually with someone else who'll be buying drinks- I don't go out alone.

But I can not fathom a bar owner asking me to leave just because I wont buy alcohol. (repeatedly) There are always plenty of others drinking it up, spending money. And if there's karaoke.. I'm up singing... drinking or no.

I can see if it was most in the room doing that, but if that were the case, perhaps they should shut down the bar and turn it into a coffee shop? (that does karaoke)

I guess it's not an issue around my area, because I've never seen or heard that be brought up before. (only here on KS)

 as long as they have a seat, they're ok

VerbInfinitive
to loiter

to loiter (third-person singular simple present loiters, present participle loitering, simple past and past participle loitered)

To stand about without any aim or purpose; to stand about idly; to linger; to hang around.
For some reason, they discourage loitering outside the store, but encourage it inside.

Right. We're not out to shame anyone into becoming an alcoholic but if they're not spending, your reason for being there is quickly being diminished.

Those that come in and nurse a single beer for 2 hours isn't helping the club or me at all. It would be better off to charge them a few bucks to sing if that's all they are there for anyway but you know how far that would go...

Exactly. My problem are those that are there to sing primarily and taking up space from those that would be there spending more. When the ratio leans to heavily in that direction, then you start hearing grumbling from the owner and staff.

Often, you hear the pop/water drinkers complain if they are charged for water or pop refills and frankly, this doesn't bother me much. Karaoke isn't really free although they'd like it to be.

PERFECT! A good singer that spends money too!

(he won't have much of a liver after a few years, but you're not his counselor.)

It's those people that don't spend a dime and keep an eye on your rotation that are the worst for your business.... they take up space, spend nothing, don't tip and usually are an annoying pain in the a$$. It doesn't matter how well they sing UNLESS they have brought in a bunch of spending listeners with them.... Not something that usually happens though.

Just like I shrugged off the one (down to one!) dance music complainer at our Friday show. The previous host did more dance music, and the crowds eventually stayed away in droves. We do one dance set a night, about halfway through, and in the 6 weeks we have been there the crowd went from decent to where you can't move in the place.

The cost of a 'water" at a BAR should be as much as the cheapest drink or soda.
The exception is if you are DRINKING and request a water it should be free.
No one should be allowed to sit in a bar to sing karaoke without spending money ...thats should be plain and simple and everyone should agree.
For those people who DO NOT or SHOULD NOT or CAN NOT drink alcohol maybe a BAR is not the place for you ? But if you're ok with being in a bar to sing Karaoke ...you have to spend money to support the bar. And for those people who do come out to sing and drink  Thanks ..drinking is legal and as long as your are responsibile not a problem.

For those who can not drink and complain about the price of WATER or SODA in a BAR ............Stay Home

Now there's a mantra I can live with!

You don't hear me telling people not to drink. If they want to and can, more power to them! I don't much like it when they fall on my equipment, but they are part of the landscape in the bar. And so are the cheapskates. And the romeos, and...well, Toby Keith said it best.

It's funny this subject came up because I had a conversation with the owner of the bar I work at this past week about this subject.

I was commenting to the owner about a gentlemen that comes in by himself and never mingles with anyone. He has a heavy japaneze accent and was singing "She Bangs". I thought it was amuzing.

The owner went off about him because he only drinks free tap water and never tips the bartenders. He contributes nothing monetarily to the bar.

I don't have a clue who spends money and who doesn't. I'm the karaoke person. I said if it bothers you that much why don't you say something to him or make him buy bottled water.

I think this is the first time I've ever heard of anyone spending zero in the bar. We sell food, have a pool table, and video games. Most people even if they don't drink alcohol at least buy a pop, have friends who come in with them, buy food or play the games.

After having this conversation I realize it is not my responsibilty. As a host I have no conception of who spends money and how much. I have no control over making a loiterer leave the bar. I can't make people spend money. If the owner doesn't like it, it is his responsibilty to do something.

My feelings on the subject are that for the most part most people are spending money. It is rare to have someone come in alone all the time and not spend a dime.

If it becomes a problem that most of your singers aren't spending enough money for the bar to support karaoke they probably won't make it as a whole.

I think the question here should be - What is the solution to a failing bar that has not enough people spending money?

We as karaoke hosts can't control this problem. Are job is to bring the people in. Is it my job to worry about what people drink?

I agree NOT the KJs problem to fix .... But as KJ's we should understand that
even the GOOD KARAOKE singers are not worthy if they don't spend money and contribute SOMETHING to the bottom line of the bar. They ( NON SPENDERS) only take up valuable singing time otherwise reserved for real CUSTOMERS.

Then again if the OWNERS or MANAGERS don't mind who spends money

Then I don't either !!!

LMAO You know that is the first thing that went through my mind when the owner said something. I thought to myself he is taking up space and time in my rotation and he isn't contributing. But when you think about it that is all he is doing when it comes to what I'm concerned with.

Karaoke was my outlet and kept me sober for about 8 years. Never had any problems Sometimes buying girlfriend or others drinks.

The difference is that you don't get arrested for not paying the parking meter and you can if you loiter and refuse to move on after being asked to. Yeah that translates to trespassing but it started with loitering.
