I'm talking actual duets, with 2 different parts in the lyrics... Johnny I hope you don't mind I started a new thread on the subject you brought up...

Personally, I treat Duets as both people use their spot in the rotation. I really don't want anyone getting on stage more than once per rotation. I don't want to be accused of playing favorites.

I dont want to be accused of being one of those anal shows that worys over little stuff.realy, aslong as everyone has fun i have never seen a show where any one cares.
I treat the duet as one persons turn, or if its slow give them as a couple an extra slot in the rotation. thus encouraging more singing.

I coulnt a duet as both persons. Used to allow it for whoever was first on the ticket, but it eventually got out of hand.
Linda & John
John & Linda
and since they were they ONLY sang together never as a solo, they began to be placed as a solo act. But then you have the ones that will get someone to sing with them or manipulate their way onto someone elses slip & get up several times per round when these other people really didn't want to sing with the person in the first place. That's when I made the rule & it helps eliminate that.

As I stated in the other thread. Two people or 12 it doesn't matter to me. It has to count as one persons turn and you can only sing twice in a rotation.
So if Michelle's name is on 5 different slips with 5 different people, only 2 of those slips get put in the 1st rotation and Michelle doesn't get to sing by herself. I never see this happen because usually Michelle will want to sing by herself, so I'll see maybe one slip as a duet and one slip of Michelle by herself.
And that said - that in itself is rare because most people want their own solo. I rarely see duets because most people want their own time alone, so duets are rare.

Once again, I would have to say I do it pretty much like Babs. I try not to have too many rules. Don't want to be the Karaoke Nazi, but won't let anyone take advantage of me either. I go by feel of the show. I do alot of private parties, whatever they want, they get.
I try to run it as if I was the singer at a karaoke show. When I go out singing, I don't want to hear anyone sing more than me. I don't want to sing anymore than anyone, but no less.

If a duet is requested and I know the song is an actual duet then I count it as the person who put it up's turn. If I have a long rotation I'll inactivate the second singer's spot and count the duet as both's turn.

I don't get many actual duets other than Picture. And I do count both singers on that rotation. I do not like to run a party on rules but there are certain situations I like to avoid. Friday nights I may only have 3 rotations in 5 hours. So I try to keep them as short as possible.

Yep......even here in the UK a Duet uses the spot......what I do if only ONE of the two singers has other songs in the Queue is call him to the stage and give him the choice;.......either the duet with the other..or his solo song...that way,if he chooses his solo song..and the other half of the duet comes up to you moaning, you can blame it on their singing partner.....

This is a pet peev of mine, as well as the group singing topic. I have 2 couples that ALWAYS put in a stack of solos and duets. I will give them each a solo, then push ONE duet towards the end of the rotation. The next time around they can sing their solos, but if they want to sing any of the duets, they need it to take place of one of their solos in rotation.
I can't say I've gotten any complaints doing it this way, even though I understand they end up getting one extra spot in the first rotation.
I do the group requests a little different, but I'll save that for the other thread.

At my shows, duets really have never been an issue, for the most part. The song always counts as one of the singers turn. The other person usually has a pile of their own as well. But occasionally, I have had a person try to abuse the system and I always put a stop to it before it happens, just by communicating with all the interested parties. I will explain that I won't let someone "horn" in on a bunch of songs, just so they can "feed-the-diva" . I do have the people that honestly do get asked to help out a lot with other singers, but I feel that's OK. Like some of the others here, too many rules puts a damper on a "party". So I always go with the flow, keeping the rotation true to itself. True duets never count as both, its not fair to the second person.

It's not fair to the second person?????? But it's fair that everyone else get's ONE TURN per rotation but someone else is getting a turn and a half or a turn and 2 halves or a turn and three halves????? I avoid shows like that as much as possible. You would rather piss off 95% of your singers to make one greedy diva happy. These people only pull that crap because they aren't satisfied being treated like everyone else. It's no different than the people who try to bribe their way into singing more often. For some reason, they think that they are better or more important than EVERYONE ELSE.

It is fair because the rule stands for everyone. Everyone has the option of giving up their turn for a duet or singing alone and making their partner give up their turn.
The fact is it counts as one persons turn. If someone wasn't singing with them the spot would still be taken up by the other person singing alone, so the rotation isn't longer.
When your turn is lost by doing a duet it detours people from wanting to do them, so it is a rare to have them.
I have just found with my situation it works the best. I'm not saying the other way is wrong. In fact when I have nights when it is so busy that people are only getting to sing once or twice all night I'll announce all duets count as both people's turn. That is only if I have a lot of group singers which is very very rare.
