getting a library of songs is not cheap. best to start out with either the Sound Choice Foundation 1 and 2 series or the Chartbuster Essentials (which has more songs than the Foundation sets). fill in with newer stuff which you can get from Karaoke-singles.com or tricerasoft.com in MP3+G format. To put the sets onto your hard drive, you are going to need a ripper and a compatable cd-rom drive. The rippers with the most compatable cd-rom drives are Microstudio and PowerKaraoke CD+G burner.
There are several programs out there for playing the songs. My suggestion is to look at them all and choose the one that fits your needs.

are just a few of the major software choices.
If you are really budget concerned then maybe these will fit
Roxbox www.kjamp.com
autokdj www.autokdj.com
Both are Winamp frontends.

Of course, as a software developer, I have always disliked those who think that software, music, dvd's, movies, etc, should be shared illegally. If everyone were to rip off artists (of any kind), then those industries would simply not exist anymore!
The same is true for software. Some have said that all software should be free, or at least the source code should be available for anyone to use. If that were true, how could any software company stay in business? What irks me the most is how companies like napster went from being completely illegal to staying in business and becoming a legal entity. That's why I'll never use napster.
So, OK, I start with some starter packs (I guess that's why most KJ's have a lot of similar material), and go from there. I still think it would be great if somehow you could just purchase 10,000 songs on a hard drive to get started. I don't see how that's a problem, given that Walmart and others like Apple iTunes sell songs on-line for 99c each. I know that they have contracts (I'm sure) with the record labels, but I'm surprised that no one in Karaoke has done this yet.
10,000 songs at $0.99 is only $9900.00 so that's not too bad. But I'd think that if some company were selling 10,000 karaoke songs at a time, that it'd probably be more like $3,000? Maybe???
Next question, so how many "true Karaoke" songs are there? That is, ones that have lyrics and no vocal tracks?

Again, there is no legally loaded hard drive available. There are some download sites that charge anywhere from $1.99-$3.99 per song - depending. But you only buy on a per song basis if you know for sure that is what you need. You don't just buy 10,000 songs not knowing what your crowds & clubs are going to command. Well not really a set answer here. I'd guess there are probably somewhere around the neighborhood of 250,000 - individual track titles that are or have been available for karaoke through the many different manufacturers both existing & defunct. This is not including the probably several hundred thousand more foreign titles.
How many does one need to run a succesful show? Again depends on the crowds, clubs, genre preferences, etc. Most of us have all agreed that a company can run a successful show with about 1,000 carefully selected titles out of their selections. well i'll be selling some of my extra laser librarys once i finish putting them on ahard drive and sell them with a hard drive ... since im sure a few people can benefit from that hard work. cheers

OK, OK, OK! I've forgotten about the hard drive concept. No problem.
I've often wondered about how Karaoke tracks are made (and I'm sure if I did a search, I'd find out)?
I've surmised that perhaps some companies have some musicians that record the song, of course without vocal tracks. But isn't this in a way copyright infringement as well, since they are then being sold, or do they get the rights from the record companies, or is it the record companies themselves doing it anyway?
Or, do they just remove the vocal tracks from the master and re-master?
Curious minds want to know!

Most of the legit manu's get the proper licensing for creating & redistributing their product. How to make one is pretty simple (well ok not 'simple' or even cheap), most have their own studios & studio musicians, the music is mace just like any audio recording. The graphics (lyrics) are then added & sync'd up.
I'm waiting for the actual record companies to realize the potential of adding karaoke tracks to the actual real cd, with the underlying graphic subcode & multiplex the music so the vocals can be eliminated, then they wouldn't need to license out anymore & control the karaoke industry as well. _________________ LIKE Lonman on Facebook - Lonman Productions Karaoke & my main site via my profile!

hi lonman actually every onein awhile some artists cds are karaoke there is a fleetwood mac cd out there that is that way from years back.

I believe I know the one you are thinking about. I know a gal that brought in either Stevie Nicks or Fleetwood Mac disc (around 94 or so - you never sang in Lakewood Dennys did you?) & asked me what the cdg logo in very small lettering in the inner circle of the cd meant, I told it was probably karaoke format, sure nuff! It had 1 or 2 karaoke tracks, no swiping lyrics, but the lyrics displayed. I'm CD based, but use the PC for small private (Read House Party) events. I prefer PCDJ/KJ Red. It does a great job, and is easy to use. Just my 2 cents....
More important is learning how to b a Karaoke Host, which is a completely different deal than a DJ or in a band. Different Psychology, Different mixing skills, different sound setup, different equipment. However, I wish you the best of luck and learning!

i don't know. if your using a nice system you can run a band, dj or karaoke off of it. thats what i prefer but i do all three. to each their own. i think your dj system could be made to handle the karaoke btw. good luck

oh and lonman it wasnt me on the fleetwood mac disk. but the disk i am referingto is fleetwood mac behind the mask albume its the whole album
