LMAO I just edited my spelling on the word "grammar". Geez if I'm going to spell something wrong that would be the word I'd want to spell right in a post like that.

Everyone misspells a word here and there when posting in the forum. No biggie. The problem is when trying to look professional when posting a website. That is a place you should take extra care not to misspell words and use good grammar.

Just Karaoke that you may be trying to sell to a doctor, lawyer, or worse yet, an English professor.
All walks of people enjoy karaoke.
No need to continue the myth that entertainers and musicians (yes, that's what we are!) are of lower class and uneducated.

If you can't spell and have decent spelling and grammar on your website or worse yet, don't even care enough about your business to have someone correct it for you, how on earth can I expect you to care enough about me and my venue to put on a good show?

Maybe not the truth, but definitely what alot of people will think, given first impressions.
With a website such as that, it may be the ONLY impression you make.
All the more reason to make it as professional as possible.
If not, you're better off with no website at all.

HOLY MUMU! I was JUST about to write that Bruce!

..that perhaps your were just being facetious in your replys....strange...there's a ZEN thing goin on here dude!

Diafel, i agree with what you wrote and would like to add, for all the "kerryoky not-zees" that TOO MANY RULES will turn off your potential customers and crowds. Treating them as children is okay if they're acting like children, but THERE'S A LINE you shouldn't cross if you want to sustain your credibility as a "professional."(used loosely).

And cutting out a singer in a rotation or banning them from a show not only hurts the bar/restaurant monetarily in the long run,(if they spend) but creates a bad reputation for you when the "banned one" speaks out to others about your business.

Only in EXTREME cases would i ever ban someone from a show..and it would take more than a few complaints for "other reasons" to ban them. People drink and act stupid- the unfortunate nature of drinking for a lot of people. Repeated acts of naughtiness (lol) requires some conditioning to correct naughty behavior.

After that, they gotta really offend someone, hurt another, or damage equipment to be banned. I think getting them to leave on their own works best. They return another day and don't even remember what happened. Seen it a few dozen times.

Oh...IMHO

I like the new logo, but do correct some of the grammatical errors. I am not being mean. I am just trying to help you have a professional look on your site. If your graphic designer is writing the text, perhaps they need to hire a proof reader. BTW, I never finished school, so education or the lack thereof is no excuse for bad grammar or syntax in a business's advertisement.

I'm right there with you both. Webpages that load audio upon arrival are bad enough, but one that has audio that sounds like a ringtone from a 1997 cell phone? Horrendous.

And it would also make me think that if he's ok with crappy renditions of music on his website, he's probably also ok with crappy renditions of karaoke songs at his shows.

The Midi audio has got to go. This turned me off right away and will do the same for potential customers. I'm assuming that you have quality discs but you would not be able to determine that by the music you play on the site.

The Logo looks really good. It should be at the top of the page and the other text with your name should be removed. Make it the Banner at the top, then put your links directly under it and all in one line across the page.

Grammar is extremely important and most quality business people and prospective clients will spot these errors immediately and dismiss you as someone who is not serious about presenting themselves professionally, and will assume that your show and service will be similar. Don't get me wrong there is nothing personal about this comment, but if you want people to take you seriously you will need to change this quickly, otherwise all your efforts to have a professional website will be wasted.

Good luck!

Oh wow, I just read the rules page. I don't know whether to laugh or just shake my head sadly. What a huge turnoff, especially:

"4) Singer wanting to change their song selection after it has been submitted may do so but it will be placed on the bottom of the rotation."

That is quite possibly the most idiotic karaoke rule I have ever seen in my life.
What possible justification can there be for punishing somebody simply because they change their mind about what song they want to do? That just strikes me as being an a$$hole simply for the sake of being an a$$hole.

"5) First time singers will get first priority this ensures that everyone gets to sing at least once."

Actually, it ensures that I will sing ONLY once. If I do a song and put a second song in, and I see someone come into the bar 45 minutes later and they end up singing their first song before I've sang my second one, I'm gonna be highly annoyed. Why am I going to waste my time hanging around for a couple of more hours when it's quite possible that I won't even get to do a second song? I'm not, I'll find a place that is less concerned about pleasing everybody and more concerned about fostering and rewarding the loyalty of the people who stick around all night.

I concur Re-invention. They seem to be rules made from egotism and self-righteousness instead of fairness, professional research, and nothing personal, but general common sense, in the way other human being should be treated and respected. IMHO.

You are kidding right? Send them to the bottom of the rotation for changing their song after submitting???? Oh man, that is wickedly sick.

All I can say Gemini is you need to think about a potential customer that would read many of those rules and get turned off. Do you really want to do that before you have a chance to get yourself in front of them? If so you will be appealing to a very narrow target market. Regardless of what you think about them (the rules) it is more important what your potential customers think.

Each to their own but you spent time and dollars building a website and it would seem like you would want to appeal to the broadest market possible. This is not the case with your current website.

Sometimes it's hard to take this sort of criticism but you did open yourself up to comments about your website. I'm thinking it was because you really wanted opinions that count when it comes to trained business people in your profession. So as harsh as some of it may sound I think many of us are trying to help you.

Instead of defending your rules you may want to look at the opinions and get some ideas from them. If not then why ask except to stirr things up.

I don't think he would want you to CATER to him, but just treat him like the adult he is. A little compassion for people and a little respect for them goes a very long way.
If I knew I was going to have to wait a very long time to sing, I might leave and go to the bar down the street as well. At least there, if there rotation is fair, they would get me in and allow me to sing again.
A better way to get new singers in AND allow for previous singers to sing in a timely fashion would be to work the new singers in betwen the old. One new... one old... one new... one old... and so on.
It's not a major deal to do, and once people know what's happening, they are great with it.
Everyone gets treated the same and it's fair to both new and old singers.
No need to be the karaoke natzee, Gemini. All you get with that attitude is people who are choked about your dictatorial attitude and never return.
I know that if you treated me the way you say you treat others I would leave, but before I left, I would have words with the owner/manager of the venue and tell them EXACTLY why I was leaving and let them know that I won't be back until something major changes.
Word of mouth is also something you need to consider.
Karaoke people stick together like glue. Tell one something, and you tell them all. And believe me, I would be telling.
Why not change that fact to your advantage and have them telling their friends GOOD things about you, rather than bad.
You attract more flies with honey than with vinegar, you know.
Just because you have the best light show, best song selection, best sound, best fillintheblankhere, doesn't mean you are secure in your job.
Don't be so full of yourself to think that someone new can't or won't come into town and try to take over.
Sooner or later they will. GUARANTEED
I, myself, would rather go to a show with less frills and even less song selection than put up with a host that's a power hungry dictator and treats his singers like 2 year olds.
I'm betting that so would the majority of people.
Gemini, I suggest this in the kindest possible way, but I think you need to hone up your people skills.
From what your site suggests, and what you've said to some of the others here on the board, you seem to sorely need it.
Your job as a karaoke host is dependant on it and your singers will aprreciate it.

Ultimately it is his business and he can do what he wants to do, and based upon past threads this (the rules) is very important to him. Maybe in Salinas it works..who knows?

Fundamentally if you compare his rule book with others in the industry his rules are very harsh and controlling. But if it works for him in his little part of the world who are we to condemn him.

Personally it angers me to see this sort of thing, but his competitors have got to love it as he will be driving folks right into their arms. All a competitor has to do is do a great job on his website and maintain a professional posture and he will get gig after gig from folks who have visited the competitor.

But you have to remember that he is from a little hole in the wall town population of around 45,000. That is like a thimble drop to many hard core karaoke cities. According to his own words, he is self appointted 'THE BEST" in that small town that his competitors are even worse.
Now if he tried those antics in a real city with hard core karaoke, he'd be just another fly in the ointment. Again, he's been spouting off with these ridiculous rules of his for the past few years...and now looking at his site he's adding all the gimmicks (lights, "SNOW" machine  , I remember him talking up his new "BUBBLE" machine :rotflmao: , now a kiosk...to try to improve the show, gimmicks are just that, bandaids for something else that isn't working, take a look at the "rules" first, but whatever. Talked about putting his book up on his website for people to see, but probably realized it wasn't such a good idea as (from what I have heard from a couple that HAVE been there, is it's not THAT impressive as he brags). May as well let it go. What works for 1 (and pretty much only one) don't work for the other 99%.
Wondering how much a good company with a kj's with really good customer service, sound, selection would pretty much take over a place like that...one can only wonder.
