Adverbs and adjectives have always been my downfall! LOL
While I can place and use them correctly, I don't always know why.
I use them instinctively and am almost always right on target., thank goodness.
Thanks for the explanation!

If you say so. I agree to disagree.

....but what is the difference between "the show was well run" and "the show was run well"?????

If well is an adverb in the second one, isn't it an adverb in the first one? I don't see a difference.

Bruce it's cool - you said you were sorry for your comment to Tom. Everybody has an off day.

LMAO I can't believe this thread has stirred a conversation on grammar. I think the main point here is his website is riddled with bad grammar and spelling. That is unprofessional and turns people off.

Bruce, in both of the cases that you provided in your last post "well" is an adverb.

Once, however, "well" it is partnered with "run", as in "well-run", it loses it "adverbial" properties and becomes an adjective. In both your examples, "well" is surely defining the verb "run" but in the former case the phrase becomes an adjective.

The distinctions that need to be crasped exist between two completely different phrases. Perhaps the following will make better sense of it.

Case 1: The phrase - "A well-run show" - describes the quality or nature of the show

Case 2: The phrase - "The show is run well" - describes how the show is being managed

Babs, I think the topic here has been shot to death and no longers exists..UNLESS someone else wants to add insult to injury and give GM (who may not even read or cares what anybody thinks) ADDED "constructive critcism" to his website and the wonderful & charming rules he's enforcing on singers.

I personally have been away from school for a few years and am enjoying this little Grammar Refresher Course i'm getting from Eric, Bruce, and Diafel. :)

It beats returning to our regularly scheduled topic :vomit: , dontcha think? Or should we let the whole topic die off and go away....? Aloha

After doing a little reading, it seems to me that a compound adjective has to be made up of two words that can stand alone as adjectives as in dark green dress where both "dark" and "green" both describe the something else. Green describes the color of the dress and dark desribes what kind of green it is. There is no such thing as a "run show" where the word "run' is an adjective in and of itself. You are now trying to use a hyphen when a hyphen was never used in any of the other instances of where "well run" was posted, and to be honest, I don't believe that a hyphen is proper in this instance.

Bruce,

In fact, before submitting my original post, I had edited out a comment that indicated I believed that a needed hypen was omitted from "well-run" in Murlynn's post.

After reading the extract I provided from the grammar text, why would you now conclude that the hyphen is not correct usage? A deliberate and careful reading of the extracted comments leads me to believe that the author accepts that the reader already knows what a compound adjective is and she is simply presenting the rules as to when a hyphen should appear.

LMAO @ Jian.

I have a pet peeve with spelling/punctuation. But, I try to leave it alone in public.

(except with my boss, good lord that man must get annoyed with me, Lol)

This thread was funny reading though:)
