There are people here who have done it, just wait for them to give you the answer.
ps: I have to post here just to bump this one up due to JD's spamming posts.

Hi Swoop,
Basically you play the LD in real time and use the audio and video outs from your Laserdisc player and send to a device such as Pinnacle. You can create vcd files that can be layed on a vcd player (using cd's) or go straight to a hard drive and create an avi or mp4 file. Either way .......be patient, this process is real time (1 min play to 1 min record), plus a learning curve. I have an almost complete set of LD's on cd's. They will each hold between 20-24 vcd tracks. And there are 28 tracks on a LD. There will be 4-8 left over tracks that won't fit on a corresponding vcd disc. Going hard drive is different, but still 1 min to 1 min conversion time. I went to hard drive first, then made my collection of vcd from there.
Swoop I've never spoken with you, but i've seen you post in several forums. It is obvious your commitment to karaoke is every bit as dedicated as mine (which my wife calls "severe to insane"). CdgFix is an amazing program and I have used it to do all sorts of things for several of my customers that do live performances with canned music.
Good luck with the conversion if choose to pursue it. I did mine several years ago and what I have told you is about all that I remember about the process. I since moved on to other things.
Thank you,
Mrmarog

I have converted over 100 LD to my collection and I am a bit confused. You mentioned that you want to rip them and put them on CDs?
First, LD does not equal CD+G. For LDs, the lyric is embedded in the video itself, unlike CD+G where it's hidden between the audio information. If you are expecting to just copy the movie and convert the audio the CD+G will happen, you can not do this. You have to rip both the movie and the audio to your computer and then convert them in to a video file, like WMV or MPEG4. Some of the karaoke software will play video format if ripped with right codec, like MTU Hoster. However, PowerKaraoke, as great as it is, will not play video based files. You have to make sure you can play them back before you rip them.
I ripped them using a HD based DVD burner. I had to rip them through analog input so the time to convert was 1 to 1. I just left them recording and came back and edited the file. One problem doing it this way, they don't do chapters since it's analog source. You have to manually set the chapters before burning them to DVD. Once I got it to DVD, then I ripped them on my computer and I use Hoster to play them.
If you want to do this directly to computer, you can do it using few products. One such products comes from Pinnacle and another from AMD/ATI. They have hardware you need to convert the analog signal to video format. Then you need a movie editing software, something like Adobe Premiere (you can use Elements version) and separate each chapter (i.e. song) and make a file. You may have to experiment with different codecs depends on your software you want to use to play these files.
Good luck, it takes a lot of time and effort to convert them but it may be worth it since some songs on the LD is not available on CD+G.

If you burn them to cd, the result will be a VCD. No matter how you label it, the end result are video files. MPEG or .AVI files.
If you take them to a show, their player HAS to be able to see that. SOME don't.
I've ripped a FEW of my lasers to computer. I used the Pinnacle recording product as well. Records to your computer EXACTLY like a vcr does. You see a blue screen image, press record, and start the playing on the laser player.
Totally real time, so be prepared to sit and monitor EACH video from start to finish.

Hey Mrmarog,
Thanks for the info. I don't have any LD's nor do I plan on ever purchasing any.
slingslingbinks asked how and Vamp didn't explain it.
DUDE... You gonna get me in trouble with that CDGFix talk.
She's a Beauty... They're coming out with a Holster soon.
Kind Regards,

I used my movie box usb and pinnicle studio version 9 software. Recorded in real life to a mpeg file and play's back with window's media player. It would b nice if karafun player would reconize it so it would play there and use the dual screen option. I also noticed that my Pioneer laser disk player will play the karaoke laser disk, but it play's the vocal's with the music. Only a true karaoke laser disk player can you kill the vocal's and only play the music, the video and the word's highlited on the screen. In time i will figure out how to convert to the correct file to burn to c-d. Tks Scott
