I personally prefer a no frills host. I do not care to waste the singers time with a host that is entertaining, that is not why I come to a show, I go to a show to sing...period. If a host is trying to be the center of attention, I & my group is out of there. Just get the singers up, that is what you are there to do!

I'm new to hosting, but I personally like to sing the first song, after introducing the business, and the bartender etc. Then I will sing the first song in each rotation, which gives the singers a sense that the rotation has now started over. I may change this in the future, but for now it works. I also like the "cherryoke" certificate, thanks for the idea. I'm learning pretty fast from this site some of the pitfalls. Glad I came here, see ya soon.

just like to add - Before I was a KJ and going out SINGING I would occasionally run into the show/KJ who was the "ENTERTAINER" type . As a new comer to the show I felt it intimidating with all the "inside" jokes and comedic acts. With almost everything in life ..a fine line between being a GOOD HOST and OVER bearing.

I think one of the most important things a KJ can do is seek out the NON regular and make them feel NOTICED and WELCOME.

The term HOST suggests some type of entertainer but the host is not the MAIN attraction. But all shows are differant and all KJ's are differant.

Kudos' to those who can add to these discussions without the need to disagree with someone elses opinion.

Several critical points that have gone unmentioned which may have a direct impact on how you run your show; I know that they impact me as I run mine:

- How consistent is the karaoke?
a. Are there a lot of the same people week in and week out singing the same songs?
b. Do you, typically have local people show up to sing who have never been to your show before?
c. Do you have people who come and go as a group, sometimes not coming back for awhile?
d. How large does your rotation get?
e. Is the rotation the same size same week in and week out?
f. Do you typically play music for a bit between singers or do call the next singers up immediately, one after the other.
- Typically, how engaged with the show is the non-singing audience throughout the evening?
- Is there room for dancing and do people typically take advantage of that room if it exists?
- Do you attempt to encourage and facilitate dancing?

I try to stay out of the way (over the mic) and get as many singers up as quickly as I can.
I'll crack jokes from time to time, or make announcements, but not in a way that gets in the way of my No. 1 job -- to make my singers comfortable, sound good and ready to get in their next turn.

Regarding dance numbers, sometimes (not often), I will play a dance number on request, if it fits the tone of the night. (My thinking is: I've never been invited to sing at a dance club!) Either way, my crowd is mostly singers, who are happy to dance along to karaoke songs.

I run my shows with the singers in mind 1st- and usually only sing the opening song for sound-check, unless i have more than 3 in line at the start. Then i don't sing at all.

I do, however, try to keep everyone else in the bar in mind, and will play The Cupid Shuffle at least once every show.

It gets EVERYONE involved because i teach the dance, packs the dancefloor Everytime, creates instant positive energy,...... and More Importantly, gets them thirsty and drinking more.

and where, pray tell, JR can we see, learn and acquire the music for this "Cupid Shuffle". I just got done learning the Curly Shuffle and here we go again. Just kidding about the Curly Shuffle, but I am seriously intrigued with the Cupid one

Uh.....Cupid Shuffle by CUPID on music cds or itunes. It's been out for over a year and one can probably find a tutorial on youtube, like there was for SouljaBoy. It's an easy to dance to song- 4 steps right, 4 left, right kick, left kick, right kick, left kick, then walk to the left, right,... rinse, and repeat.

I'll get working on that this week. I like doing line dances when it is an appropriate filler - Cha Cha Slide, Mississippi Slide. Now that I'm looking I'm finding the Cupid Shuffle!

In the last year, however, i don't think we done a line dance more than 5 times. But it's definitely a plus when it "foots the bill"
