I use a 17" LCD monitor on this funky stand I found. It looks and works fantastic and really doesn't cost all that much, especially since I had the monitor laying around from a previous desktop computer. You would be surprised how many people comment on it being so "modern". Plus it is hands down better than lugging a TV around everywhere you go...and then trying to figure out where to put it where people can see it.

Nobody has knocked it over yet (knock wood), but I did have to replace the casters with better ones from Home Depot as they were cheap plastic and one snapped.

(pay no attention to that rats nest of cables. )

Barry, where did you find a stand like that? That is kind of funky looking yet cool at the same time---do you have a link or web site name?

I used a tv for a while (actually a regular old vacume tube computer monitor).

It was one of the heavier pieces of gear, and since I had to set up before each show and take my gear home it was a bit of a anoyance.

Unfortunately in the regular hassles of setup the monitor stand tipped over one day and the monitor shatered on contact with the cement floor.

My replacement was a LCD monitor that I think I paid about 145 for new. Not only is it a lot lighter than the old monitor, but it makes the stand less topheavy and more stable.

I used the old monitor stand that i bought for for my non lcd monitor and bought a "wall mount kit" at wall mart that could be easily bolted onto the old stand.


If you dont have to worry about transport of gear go with non lcd monitors, you can get them used for practically nothing now, as many workplaces switch to LCDs. In fact at work today the surplus department was hauling away a stack of non lcd monitors. THey could probably be obtained for nearly free except for the one they dropped.

If you intend to be mobile at all LCD is highly recomended. I go with a 17" for the singer and a 19" for the audience.

What is needed to take S-Video out of my laptop and connect to a LCD Monitor

Do the flatscreens have -svideo in ? or is some type of converter required ?

Does your laptop not have a VGA connection?

The reg tv's have a video input which are more expensive. I did get a 21" on Ebay for $200 with a video input which was a bargain.

This is great! I've been looking for something like this, but all I've found were VGA to S-video, not the other way around. I'm replacing the CRT tv in my main venue, and now I can easily use a computer LCD instead of the much more expensive LCD TV. Thanks, Ollie

I have a silly question that I think I already know the answer too...but I just want to make sure...We are converting our disc's to computer so we can use compuhost...so we need to change the video connection as well...Am I right when I think that I am going to have to use VGA out of the laptop to the VGA on the LCD? So If the bar owner has an available Big Screen LCD that he (or she) wants the lyrics to appear on I will also need a splitter? So if that is the case I will need 2 40' VGA's and one Splitter? IS this correct? Thanks everyone...

I wouldn't say "splitter". And you normally don't run VGA that far. Also, the big-screen LCD will unlikely have a VGA.

I use the Monoprice converter that goes VGA--> Svideo, RCA, and VGA. That will drive up to three screens. RCA is very definitely the cable you want to run 40 feet.

I've been using a 7" LCD TV that I bought from Radio Shack for $199. It's got a threaded insert on the bottom that allows it to be attached to the same tripod you would use for a still camera or video camera. It works great!

My singers are also mostly baby boomers but nobody seems to have any difficulty reading it. It's small, compact and weighs very little. I bought a padded portable DVD player case for it and it holds both the TV, the power supply and the portable hard drive that I attach to my karaoke machine.

It's been a great solution for me.

Mcky so basically I could buy this converter and run s video from the laptop to RCA on the big screen? The Monoprice would be hooked to the laptop and then use to output to my monitors or screens?

If you do not need to convert VGA out or covert to VGA in - then all you need is an RF modulator ($20 just about anywhere) this will take s-video from laptop and convert to either RCA or coax cable.

I would assume that the only advantage to getting the Monoprice is that I can do more than one extra monitor this way.

It depends, with an RF modulator you can, and I do run multiple monitors, both coax and RCA, the only advantage the Monoprice unit has is if you want to connect to a VGA monitor you can, but on the downside you can't do coax with it. So you have to decide which way you will go or get both and have all bases covered.
