When I was asked to help draw up a lean process flow at 6am on Monday morning, I told them that I couldn't think with a clear head. The industrial engineer said, "Well now we know what you do on the weekend." I reluctantly had to tell him it was from bad sound.

In some cases you resurrected threads which were 3 months old and had long since seen resolution.

We just purchased QSC speakers for my partner's rig, no doubt they're fabulous.

I started out with and still have a Fender Passport, and it has not failed me yet. Why the Fender, it reflected what I was willing to invest as a Newbie, realizing I could have failed. Some will say that using the Fender could have resulted in my failure. Not so, there are plenty of Fenders in use around here in small venues and those KJ's stand by them for the job they being used for!

But I do realize the day may come, and it may come soon that I will need something better. When I come to that bridge, I will happily cross. And no, buying cheap doesn't mean buying "twice" or "thrice". It means I will have a compact back-up that I will be very comfortable using when the occasion doesn't require more. What do you think it takes to fill a 6000 sq ft venue with sound, anyway?

Exact reason I got my Yamaha Stagepass system for smaller parties that doesn't require my main system which is overkill for small parties. By small parties, I mean places that even at lower levels, my main system would be blowing out the place. had a wedding reception where the room was the size of a medium sized livingroom, definately too small for my main system, so Iused the Stagepass without complaint. This was DJ only.

There was a time when I thought the higher end Passport was too expensive for what you get. My buddy bought one and got rid of it. He's using a lightweight amp with a pair of 3 way 2-15s on each side(4 total). For that load it's probably the cleanest I've heard. But that's a big step up from the Passports. I recommended the fancy Bose linear array without the sub for a crooner entertainer for clubs, parties and weddings. A single clean powered 2 way 12 would probably do the job. As for the venue most people would use a pair of 15 powered Just-Be-Louds. One of my KJ mentors told me they distort when you push 'em though. My buddy's setup would be good for including the dance vibe though. I would say one or two subs with a pair of satellites no smaller than 12s. That would be for a hotel gig or wedding. At least about 100 people if you include dancing. So if you're pushing a smaller system the low end will typically suck the power. The lower the more power. If those frequencies aren't amped seperately or processed with a low frequecy delay then the higher ends get muddy. It dosn't hurt to back off a little on the high end and upper mids. I love a lot of sub, some good lows and less mids and highs. That way you don't have scream too loud on the dance floor and save the ears. Oh yeah, hearing conservation is an issue.

I was at a karaoke joint on Sunset & Gower and the system wasn't really that loud. The only problem was that when I tried to sleep that night I felt that sizzling sensation between the ears. Then everytime I woke myself up from snoring it sounded like someone clobbering a mic over a pa. During the event however I had no issues with the sound but one where the system hiccuped and what sounded like some rocker type in the far corner sang out and cued me back up. My blood boiled because he was good. Afterwards I realized it was a speaker mounted near the corner ceiling and it was the old guy, the host. There was no local rocker to be found. Yes indeed I have issues. I'll admit it. But like Nick Lowe says, you've got to be cruel to be kind.

A 10 for low is not large, 18in is the standard

It depends on the spl of your cab and the acoustical environment and whether the freq response will make that much difference. Most people wouldn't notice subtle differences.

I once seen a dj use a 1 or 2x15 CV cabinet with a high powered lightweight amp. In my opinion it was too loud for a sub in a high school gym. The entire mix was mushed around in sonic soup of thump echoes. I've seen the same thing happen at first rate act concerts. An entertainment company guy I know leaves the dance gigs up to his younger djs who use subs, and he uses mainly the powered 15s for the other gigs.

I recently attended a tourist attraction event where there were several dj dance floors set up and a band stage. One of the indoor dance floors had a wall of subs but rest of the freq volume was also way loud. Needless to say I didn't see many dancers if any at all. Another indoor setup wasn't quite as extreme but was drawing slightly more people in. You can use a 12 or 15 sub for a small club for about 100 people or so for dance. Anything larger would suit an outdoor concert event or a good sized dj gig. That would be outdoor or in a large building.

I've seen a low profile powerful system setup for a fairly good sized concert event and I can't get any where near it. That was nearly 100 yards outdoors. I don't get that extreme volume thing. There's always distributed sound as an alternative though. A lot of kids these days who listen to ipods with their earbuds real loud and go to these loud events must be suffering from hearing loss. Not to mention the electricity used. If only someone would come up with an efficient, powered, light weight system with an off-the-hook response and spl rating.

The all-in-one package is an interesting concept. . I have yet to hear anything less than a 10 not sounding like it's coming from a box. I often hear a pair of powered Jes-B-Louds being cranked up in a local lounge to dance music and it always sounds like clipping from a shoebox wanting to be a sub. I always laugh when I see attentive listeners and the pro singer types wince. If you have a couple of 8s with a ported cab then maybe you'd get a decent response. Yamaha is probably the biggest seller of about anything and usually with adequate design though.

The class-d is a jump although it's probably 70W rms. The spec says 70W and yet it says 150 per channel. It almost seems like it's powered by fusion. Most amps will have an efficiency of 40% if you're lucky and that includes the sound pressure level. That's when the speakers aren't matched to the amp. Not class-ds, they should be around 90% efficient. But then look at the thd%...not so good. Anything more that about .07% at best is compromising. That's a trade-off with class-ds, which brings me to another question.

Has anyone ever tried building powered speakers with class-d circuits? I looked into a Hypex module but couldn't find a switch-mode power supply for it. There are some packaged devices that will go up to about 50W if I remember correctly. These don't usually require a heat sink. Using neodymium speaker drivers would lessen the weight and the response corrections could be made from outboard gear or simply from an input preamp processor. This would be ideal for the karaoke host. I see a lot more hosts using laptops. I'm wondering if a usb or firewire interface can be used for mic inputs. There would be no racks, amps or heavy speakers to lug. Anyone game?

JD,
Simply put, all your posts here are a bit long written and often repetitive. I gather from your responses that you are undoubtedly quite intelligent and have a significant amount of live sound experience. What I did not see, is a simple response to an oft asked question.

1) Do you work for a sound or electronics company? (Yes/No)
2) If yes, which one?

Relatively simple question, lets see an honest straightforward answer. Suprise me.

Good deal, point taken as long as you are saying that you have no affiliation with them (employment or otherwise) and you are merely stating you're opinions as a consumer.

As a point of note though, its obvious that people feel that you are spamming them by the simple facts that this topic was generated and that several topics have you posting 2 to 4 defensive posts in a row. I personally enjoy parts of your posts that are on topic. I hope you take this to heart that those of us who truly wish to learn something here often find it hard to fully read through the responses to topics because of the clutter in defending 4 times to what is said once.

I've never engaged in forums before so you've been there. I don't consider myself an audio type in anyway other than a hobbyist hack. Even though I have some digital background the digital topics here are brand specific and my skills are pretty obsolete. So forgive me If I'm a forum virgin.
