There are few here that have been homeless or know what real survival is. With these times you will see more and more families living out of their car looking for work and not a handout. They will not panhandle until the kids are starving.

It is time for folks here to volunteer and donate to the local missions. The government is not going to be our saviour !! This is a grass roots issue no red tape or control. They rely upon us to pay for their mistakes with a hundred trillion more dollars which will not work again. We need to solve our problems with logic, common sense. elbow grease and Love. From experience you help one and you get help back from three.

LETS SPREAD THE WEALTH TO THOSE WHO NEED AND DESERVE IT!!! VOLUNTEER!!!

Yep, excellent ideas Ollie! Right here in Canby, pop. 15,000, there's an estimated 200 homeless children right now. A lot of kids and their families need help.

Yes Ollie, always a good thing to do. 200 homeless kids in Canby?!? Wow. In a town of 15,000, that's quite a bit. I know in the Milwaukee area, those living with relatives or other friends are considered homeless even if they are actually staying in someone's house. I would think in a town of the size of Canby, you would see those 200 milling about. It's getting colder in this part of the country, so remember those that are outside. If ya got some old blankets, you can drop those off at your local Rescue Mission. I wouldn't confront an actual homeless person. Some have mental or psychological issues. I was homeless for part of the early 70s, and again in the early 80s....not fun.

Regarding Odie's statement...There was an article in the Canby newspaper about the homeless kids here in Canby.

It's not that all these kids are technically "out on the street"... well, here's the article:

http://www.canbyherald.com/CANNews1.shtml

It's sad though. I recall my son having a good friend a few years ago and wanted to know if he could stay a few nights with us cause his dad had "kicked him out of the house"... he was about 15. As far as I know, he was an ok kid, didn't do drugs or drinking or anything of the sort. But, even if he was a troublesome youth, who in hell kicks a kid out on the street at 15 years old?

Odie, it's funny you mention that... I had just read that article and didn't know it was so bad. I know John Hackworth (of course, from the high school) and know he's the liaison, but I've never heard him give a number as to how bad it actually is here. I was thinking of going down and doing some kind of volunteer work for the new center. It sounds like they can use people, and giving some time (even for organization and planning/distribution for the center) is something I'm certainly willing and able to do. My boss has been urging me to take time out of work days to do a bit of volunteer/community work anyhow, so I think I'll go over there and see if/where they can use me:)

Ollie, your starting this thread...... just shows what a decent, kind hearted person you really are inside.

Happy Holidays to ya my friend.

I couldn't agree more.

Since I only work 4 days a week, I've been volunteering at the local "mission" for two of them. Came down with some homemade spaghetti and they went NUTS. I mean, it cost us practically nothing. I had people wanting to lick the tupperware! LOL!
