Had my first "show", just a small gathering of family. Played for 8 hours. There were a couple issues that I'm concerned about before I try to make a few bucks at this.

My compuhost program froze up 3 times during the show and would not close forcing me to reboot the computer. Does anyone else have this issue? It has never done this before until I had everything hooked up.

I was unable to get my Shure Beta 58 mic to function properly. It has the power and mute buttons on the very bottom of the mic and at first when I had it connected it would work but if I put the mute button on it would make an awful squeal on the speakers. Any suggestions?

Had a bit of trouble getting the mic volume up at a reasonable volume in comparison to the sound. I nearly maxed out the channel fader for the mic to get the volume up.

Other than that, it's just a matter of getting more familiar with the mixer and it's controls.

That's a problem sometimes with the computers.
What kind of computer are you running, processor, memory, hard drive? Windows version?
And are you trying to run anything else at the same time. Make sure that you have nothing else open or running unnecessarily in the background.

SOunds like your battery in the mic was going bad. Also does the mics reciever have an output or gain control?

This is a Toshiba Satellite 80 gb hardrive 2 gb of ram 1.4 ghz processor. Windows XP. I may have had iTunes running but I don't think every time. Does this happen to others during live shows?

My battery was brand new. Receiver is L4, honestly, I don't know the answer to your question about the receiver.

Never. I have used CompuHost on 3 different computer for scores of shows, and never had it happen once during a show.

what other "Basic" programs were running, ones that start up with the computer?

Kill your antivirus and other programs that aren't "needed"... especially for a 'show' computer

Usually we run Compuhost and Winamp. Sometimes Firefox as well. Plus a shell program called Cygwin.

the squealing of the mic may be due to you turning it upside down to get to the mute...if you do that too close to a speaker it will squeal

Other than maybe separating your music on a separate hard drive, it sounds like the computer itself is ok. Again, are there any other programs - firewalls, antivirus, anything that automatically starts up that doesn't need to run going?
On the reciever, is their any knobs? Maybe update your Windows via custom updates & udate your drivers of some of the computer hardware. A good program to use for this is belarc adviser.
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html It will tell you what is current & what needs to be updated.

I run MTU Hoster & have never had any problem like that. Only time was when my motherboard fried.

Ok, I did another "mini" show last night. No problems with compuhost freezing, I only played about 3 hours but I opened nothing else. I will check to see what other unnecessary programs are opened whenever my laptop is booted up. Lonman I will look at this program you pasted when I bring my system back home today.

Still having problems with the mic. Along with this mic, I am running two others and they are working fine. When I switch the channels, these other two mics work fine, it's just the Shure Beta that is always giving me problems.

I can't seem to find the proper levels to play the mics so that they are loud enough for the music. I end up with the channel fader close to maxed out while the control fader for the music input from the laptop is only about half way and the stereo out master fader is only about halfway. If I try to turn either the music input fader or the stereo out up past that, I get feedback from the mics. Should note that due to the setup of the room, the singers are in front of the speakers. At these levels, I am unable to get the amount of volume needed for a bar. Any suggestions? I am running the mics on the first three channels and the music input on the stereo in.

How are the trim pots set, i.e. the top knob on the channel?

Also, the Beta 58 transmitter will probably have a level setting of its own.

Mcky, if you are referring to the gain controls, they are between half way and 3/4.

Regarding Compuhost problem.

When you installed Compuhost did you read the manual or did you just pop in the CD and install the program? There are certain system settings that they suggest to use to allow the program to run at optimal performance. If you did not follow these instructions then doing so now may help solve your problem. This is a common mistake many folks make when installing software.

Make sure that your anti-virus and firewall programs are disabled as these are usually major problems when it comes to programs freezing up.

Also limit your programs that utilize the startup menu as they are constantly running in the background and use up system resources.

When I run Compuhost I have the following programs up and running and have no problems: OTS DJ, Mozilla Firefox, MS Excel

Chances are your problem is probably related to one of the above issues. CompuHost is a very stable program.

I am keeping my music on an external hard drive. On the receiver, it only has a volume knob and an off/on button.

Ok on the reciever, is there any kind of lights for signal or clip? Better yet, what is the model of the receiver again?

Regarding your mic:
I don't know what mixer you use, but just in case you have not noted it, there is a pad button near the gain port: make sure you release it.

Lonman, still having this issue.

Also my wireless SM58 is very muffled, I can't get much volume out of it compared to a wired Radio Shack mic I have. I tried switching channels, Shure is still muffled, RS is clear. I turn the channel fader up for the Shure to get more volume and get more hiss out of the speaker.
