Finally, we agree! Thank God for the other 5 days in the week.

Mike,
Would it effect your thinking at all to learn that the nights when the Coffee Shop doesn't have entertainment the place is dead? Like in D-E-A-D
Or would you give any pause to know that the KJ, a friend of mine, proudly shared with me that the owner told her she is his "cash cow"?
ONE IMPORTANT CLARIFICATION. THE ORIGINAL OWNERS ARE THE ONES THAT HAD ENGAGED ME AND THEN CLOSED UP BEFORE I BEGAN. TWO MONTHS LATER IT WAS SOLD TO THE CURRENT OWNER! I know it's probably been confusing because Ive been speaking in both the past and present tense.

I've never heard of a KJ toot their own horn before. Well, I guess I was wrong. She must be making money hand over fist as the KJ there. And the owner of the establishment must be looking to expand to another location.
I'd have to ask why not karaoke EVERY night then?? Perhaps he could then start a franchise. Wow, you really opened my eyes to something here. And to think, coffee was the catalyst that may spark the resurgency of this current weak economy!
Perhaps it's time to lock this thread, I'm tired of arguing. I'm going to start my own karaoke gig at the new portable toilet next to the construction site up the street.

It is just starting to get interesting and you want the thread lock?

I hope Mike knows more about running a latrine than he does about the profitability of running coffee houses, or karaoke for that matter.
One thing with a toilet, he'll have a line of women waiting!

most of the COFFE type places offer a stage area for open mic and duets type acts.
They USUALLY don't pay these people .... It's a win/win for some entertainers trying to get some practice and experiance

The coffee house I am discussing does have a stage and a computerized spotlight device. There's plenty of seating and with the menu I described, any person with the least amount of business acumen understands that the diversified menu offered (see my previous post) is priced so as to provide a profit, even when there is karaoke to pay for. In fact more people are in attendance during Karaoke than any other night of the week. The shows are on Sunday and Wednesday and start at 7pm. Plenty of folks arrive before the show and have their dinner there. That is primarily what makes it viable economically. The place is standing room only!
But of course, no one asked about the hours of the shows or the attendance!

This is all about knowing what your market is. It sounds like karaoke in bars in Florida does not bring in the money, but put it in a coffee house and "ta da", money is made. If I may presume the crowd is predominantly older on a fixed incomes in Florida. They are less apt to drink a lot of alcohol, but will eat dinner and buy coffee.
Makes sense to me.

Just goes to show that karaoke is different for different people all over the world, and even from place to place within a country.
What works in Florida might not work here and vice versa.

Well, yes, the karoake crowd as the Coffee House were above average in their income level. Good Observation, Babs!
And I don't want to leave anyone with the impression that Karaoke doesn't work in bars. The real point is that one will never know where it will work
I can't find a recent post I had made about a show that was successfully built up on Sunday evenings at an Italian Restaurant to the point where reservations were needed to get seating during the show.
That KJ at that restaurant was the same KJ at the Coffee House. Of, course, the restaurant had gone out of business when she started the Coffee House job on Sundays!

The only coffee houses I have seen in action for karaoke had mostly kids since their is no law saying anyone under a certain age can't go into a coffee house. They did serve sandwiches & other things, even beer & wine. Not alot of drinking going on, saw coffees ordered but not repeat orders, very little food was actually ordered. They still do it, but they aren't open consistantly on any given day.

I would have thought myself that with the nature of the environment and the early starting time that there would be more kids at the shows. There were some younger people, but I couldn't say for sure how many were of drinking age.

Most of the younger kids are on Ritalin, and don't need the caffene......

RE: Johnny R's Post
Just what % of kids are on Ritalin? And what about adults who are on it?
Of course, instead of coffee, the kids could have all the sweets they want with hot chocolate or milk.
You're not going to suggest next, are you, that the "sweets" will have the kids "bouncing off the wall"?
If you are, look up the pharmacology on Ritalin. It is a stimulant!

This is really not a bad concept. (OK flame on ). I don't know if it would work around here or not, but I don't know of restaurants in my area that have sucessful karaoke nights.
Personally I would not rule out a slight reduction in my price for a earlier ending time, and a chance to get kids and families involved, and not have to deal with drunks every week. To me it's another opportunity to market to the masses for private gigs, etc.
I have had a blast in the past doing bubble parties at day care centers. 100.00 for 90 minutes of goofing around with pre schoolers can be fun and profitable

Scotty,
I've been to shows where the kids were adorable. I think only an impatient diva would have a problem waiting in turn. Remember, many of the places I frequent are dining facilities, primarily, and families are in attendance.
It is important, though, that the someone make sure that the kids are being supervised. My 2 yr old grandson, for example, is a "karaoke addict". If he sees a mic, he makes a beeline for it.
