Here is the box that I'm using...
http://www.radioshack.com/product/index ... Id=2049645
Thanks Sev and Matt, this must be what is happening, if there is no load on the cable, the extended desktop shuts down. My only downfall right now. I must need a better box! I will start looking aroud, any suggestions, with (4) inputs? MrD

Sevarin @ Wed Dec 10, 2008 11:45 am wrote: Ok, I'm more awake now, so I can write a little bit more. I tried the Lexicon Alpha yesterday and guess what? I still had that cracking static noise! I couldn't believe it! It was working fine going from my Laptop Headphone port to the mixer the day before. No noise, no nothing.... So I figured, it must be the Behringer USB Sound Card. So there I am, singing my opening song and that noise is back again. I was pi$$ed! I was thinking for a second and remembered, that I had issues with my Echo Audiofire2 and Vista before. I stopped using the Audiofire, because my Firewire Port on my Laptop is very sensitive, meaning if I accidentally touch it, it might disconnect and the sound would be gone. But before I stopped using it, I had some sound issues with it, too. Fortunately I have Windows Vista and XP on my Laptop (Dual Boot). So I restarted the Laptop and booted into XP, installed the Lexicon Alpha driver real quick and off I went with the show. No cracking noise, nothing... This is the first time EVER I run into a problem with Vista. But I guess, I stick with XP for now. Bottom line is, I could almost bet, that the Behringer works just fine under XP, too. It must be something they recently updated in Vista though, because I was running Vista and the Behringer for almost a year now and never had that issue before. It's just weird, can't figure it out...
The "crackling" sound is quite possibly related to the buffer size. Try increasing the buffer and see if that resolves the noise.

Theres seems to be quite a few issues being raised on this subject.
Let me update you on where I'm now at.
I purchased the Behringer soundcard, plugged it in, the computer (Vista) immediately installed it and away it went, no problems.
However, mabye its my ears battered and bruised from a lifetime of live gigs, but I have to admit I didn't notice any appreciable improvement in sound quality. Although as I said before the sound I was getting before was not at all bad. When I get a quiet minute I'll do a proper A/B sound comparison to check if it is better.
The interference (like a static sound) also was still present but after reading about the earthing thing I just disconnected the earth wire on the power supply to the laptop and hey presto ! Quiet as a mouse now. (safe as well i think cos the earth doesn't go to the laptop anyway and its only 24V).
One thing still worries me though. Even when operating through the Behringer the volume can still be controlled via the headphone output volume control on the laptop.
I would have thought that this would have been bypassed.
I've not yet got as far as installing any of Behringer's software. Mabye I should ??
On the subject of the 'S-video' I too use just a simple A/B switching box and the Vista screen returns every time. I use Sax and Dottys karaoke if that helps.

I use the m-audio fastrack audio interface. I like it cept for one thing...it doesnt step down to both channels, only records on the left then I have to manually paste it to the right...but I dont have the latency probs I used to have with the soundblaster live
external. Plus I plug in a preamp instead of a mixer so as I can run a condenser Mic. Less clutter ![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)

That almost sounds like a setting in your program.

Sev, I need your help now. I have purchased the same box that you have. I plugged it and got it working, but it has the same issue. If you can walk me through your set-up? Mine is as such. I have (3) rca video in and (1) s-video in - (1) rca video out to tv. I can get the extended desktop to work from the s-video on my laptop, but if I switch to go to the rca video in from my cd players, I lose the s-video signal. Any ideas? MrD

I have my onboard device set to disabled with zero problems. Eliminated a hum sound I was getting through the onboard sound engine.

That model does have an RF modulator to convert video to coax, but it is not an RCA-->SVideo converter. You would have to convert S-Video to an RCA video on your laptop (by using a converter) to make it switch like you want.

Thanks Mcky57....
That's about what I was afraid of, Rat Shack wanted like $25 for just that, but didn't think I needed it because the box accepts s-video..but doesn't convert it to the other signal. It's more clear now. Dang it, nothing ever just works!!!!!. I hate the idea of having to convert it to rca, then go to the box. Thanks for the help.
I'm also still curious if anyone has done a side by side comparison between a actual ext sound card and the usb sound interface? Is there a noticable difference? MrD

Believe me, I made the same mistake. Including the one about buying just the cable adapter -- those send a signal but it ends up being black and white. I just had to buy the converter, no way around it.

Give this one a shot, it accepts both RCA & S-Video & can output to either S-Video, RCA, Coax or ALL!

Lonnie,
The rca brand that we were discussing accepts all of them too?
On another note, is there anything special about the little s-video/rca converter? I can buy a 6ft cable, s-video one end and rca male the other. I don't want any adapters if I can get away with that. Uggggh, what a pain in the azz.....MrD

Don't do it. That is the mistake I mention -- just a cable leaves you with a black and white image. Quote: I don't want any adapters if I can get away with that. Uggggh, what a pain in the azz.....MrD
Bite the bullet and buy the SVideo->composite converter. It'll only hurt for a minute. ![Cool 8-)](./images/smilies/icon_cool.gif)

You could try it, sometimes they work, sometimes no - I just say get the proper gear as opposed to trying to adapt something to work, but that's just me. I hate adapters unless it's the absolute last alternative.

So this is the magic box I figured must exist. I bought one which had essentially the same spec, and it didn't do the SVideo --> RCA composite conversion.
