Last night I had a guy that insisted on calling me "Hey karaoke Chick". I corrected him twice by asking him to call me by my name "Babs". He didn't seem to understand I didn't like it. All night long I hear "Hey Karaoke Chick". I wanted to strangle this guy, but knew that was illegal. About the 20th time I yelled back on the mic "Hey Drunk Guy" my name is Babs. The crowd laughed and he left.
Am I being to sensitive here? or is that just rude. I dislike being yelled at from the crowd because I can't help the person if they don't come to the stage. I'm not going to address their issue by screaming back at them over the mic. So I took the opportunity then to make a point to this guy.
But of course I felt bad because I embarrassed him and he left after. I was glad he was gone because he was a nuisance, but that was all he was just a nuisance.

He probably thought he was impressing someone, (in his drunken stuper), believe me, I'm sure he heard you the first time. I think you let him off the hook easy, some of the women I've met would have probably called him alot worse, "If you know what I mean". Maybe you should have also told him to "save his hay, someday he might own a horse".

Sometimes I wish I could forget, with guys like that!
I've had a few of the morons as well.
I absolutely HATE being called a chick or any other thing like that.
I can forgive it once, but after I correct them and tell them my name, there's no excuse and it's just plain rude.
I probably would have handled it similarly, unfortunately because I can only take it so many times.
But first I would try to ignore him completely.
Eventually he might actually ask why I won't answer. At that point I would remind him that "Hey Karaoke Chick" wasn't my name, and I only answer to my name.
After that, though, it's a free for all when he does it again.

I wouldn't take it personally myself. I sometimes wear a nametag that says, Hi I'm The Karaoke Guy or Dude!

It may be different for guys, though Lon.
I know myself, without getting into it too much, being called a chick or anything like that tends to disrespect me as a woman and if one guy does it and gets away with, the rest will follow.
From there it ALWAYS goes downhill and before you know it, some guy's trying to grab the goods.
It's not that guys are TRYING to be rude or anything, they just don't get it because it doesn't matter to them if it was them.
Being a guy, I don't expect you to understand, but that's been my experience. Correct me if I'm wrong, girls....

That's funny !
I don't think calling another guy dude is insulting. I find guys do it when they don't know your name. Chick although feels demeaning. I've been called honey, sweetheart etc... That doesn't bother me. I think it would bother most men if someone referred to their wife as chick, but I don't think it would bother a woman if a girl called their husband dude.

Without being too serious about this, I think we teach people how to treat us. Obviously I'm not considered a "chick" anymore but I also don't tolerate anyone who uses demeaning names. I guess I'm fortunate that I haven't had to deal too much with this type of behavior. If a dude insists on using anything but "karaoke lady" which is inevitably what people will call me, I will quietly take him aside and suggest that he can either use my name or 'karaoke lady' or 'karaoke host'. I try not to embarrass people over the mic but sometimes if they beg for it long enough, I will oblige.
THis may be a very venue specific thing, too. Most of the places I've worked in aren't conducive to drunken yelling.
We women are put in the position of having to establish power quickly or like someone said above, it's easy for things to get out of control and many will attemp to take advantage of the situation. Just seems like there are lots of women out there who haven't raised their sons with enough respect for the female of the species!

Yeah I agree. Sometimes I'll get one of those in. Someone who'll call me demeaning names because it gets him attention and he thinks it makes him look superior somehow. Never did figure out how that logic works.
You handled it better than I do Babs.

How sad but true, Karen!
I almost wish I had boys instead of girls, just to teach them the RIGHT way to behave.
But Nahhh! I love my girls!

I could see someone calling out "Karaoke Chick" but after being corrected then you waited about 17 times too late to call out "Drunken Guy".

I use a graphics for fun on my background that has a big, fat guy with his arms in the air... For fun, I typed in the words "The Fat Guy"...
Thought nothing of it until one time a song ended earlier than I expected. I was working the crowd, when this chick yelled out "HEY FAT GUY!"
I got pretty irritated and walked up to take the microphone from her, and there in a big 72" screen, was the artistry and text...
I actually had to laugh at myself at that one!
Babs, I think you used incredible restraint... and NEVER take anything these people say seriously until they say it to your face SOBER.

But what if they never get sober?
I say that only partially in jest, however I do have a few regs who truly NEVER get sober. They are in the bar as soon as it opens and stay until it closes.

Babs,
As usual, you handled it!
As to "dude", I don't want to be called "dude". From where I originate it is not a welcomed nickname. And only of late has it taken on a connotation of simple meaning "guy"!
I literally cringe ever time hear people refer to Sarah Palin's husband as the "first dude". How ridiculous!
But someday soon, "dude" will leave the vernacular and return to obscurity where it rightfully belongs!
PER MERRIAM WEBSTER
Function:
noun
Etymology:

1: a man extremely fastidious in dress and manner : dandy
2: a city dweller unfamiliar with life on the range ; especially : an Easterner in the West

Not to get too off topic, but I'd always thought of dudes as the 2nd explaination. My son kept calling guys that, until I told him to look up the definition of a dude.

I dont recall working many times when I wasnt commonly called dude or "that Karaoke guy". I dont think that or "chick" is meant as a sign of disrespect, it just has to do with being around a bunch of drunks who dont know your name, and are too drunk to remember if you told em. Your regs. know!
I think I learned a rule long ago in my days of drinking and partying alot, that most women that I was attracted to (often were the smart (@$%!) and independant type anyway) if I walked up asked their name and stuck up a conversation, within 10 seconds they would ask if I remembered their name as a prelim test. Not like that has anything to do with this situation, but I learned to never forget a lady's name if she actually went through the trouble of telling you.
Basically, dont take it to heart, it comes with the territory.

I knew a kj that called herself the wonderful karaoke goddess (well not quite--I modified the name to protect the innocent). To me the guy wasn't being too rude, but if you corrected him once, it shouldn't take a third time. In the meantime, here is an appropriate video:

to embed youtube videos, click on the "more Tags" link... click the youtube button, and ONLY type in the video url *minus the http and youtube.com/ stuff* and then click the youtube button again to close the code out.
Or type in the youtube video number (in this case it's "2KUrjTcCioY", highlight the whole word, and then click the Youtube button. It'll put the start and end codes on there.

An old comedian friend of mine once said when dealing with hecklers and disrespectful people while your performing
"Its the one with the microphone who gets the last laugh"
He/She who holds the mic is King (or Queen as you proved Babs)
