This is the first year I've ever heard the Wednesday before Thanksgiving being referred to as "Black Wednesday" - One of the biggest drinking nights of the year.
I heard a couple of the twenty somethings refer to Wed. like this. Then my daughter said it. I guess I'm just out of the loop.
Wednesday was over the top busy. We only had one bartender. Aaarg ! The owner dropped the ball big time. An employee who was there to enjoy themselves ended up helping her out of the kindness of their heart. I worked 2 hours over quitting time. I do get paid if I work over. I started at 8pm and ended at 2am.
Did you all have a "Black Wednesday"?

This was the first Wed. before Turkey day that I haven't worked in 5 years. The bar I work had a band. I did not go so I don't know how it went. Then the owner decided to close Thanksgiving night. He claimed he would have no business that night so he did not open. From the other venues that I have talked with everyone was hopping Thurs. night. except the bar I work. I had several phone calls and text messages asking if I was working that night, so I feel like alot of business went else where for this place. Not a good decision in my opinion, but I don't own the place. According to the owner I'm just the DJ, what do I know. Other than 22 years in this business I don't know anything. Totally no respect.

The thanksgiving show was busy. 30 different singers (and this is starting at 11pm). Not only that a lot of people showed up at the start of the night moderately to very drunk, and just kept on drinking.
It was a good show in many ways and a lot of people regularly associated with the bar tried karaoke who were very rarely singers on a regular night.
I also had to stop in to break up a fight, something that I have never been close to doing before at my shows....
At other places I have known the pre thanksgiving wed to be a busy-crazy night.

I suffer from CRS. (Can't remember sh!t)
The only remedy I've found is post-it notes. Two a day keeps the doctor away.
I realise the Wed before Thanksgiving is always going to be busy. My point was I've never heard of the term "Black Wednesday". I think it is a younger generations term.

I was busier then normal for a Wed night. So much that near my usual ending time of midnight the bar manager asked me if I minded playin on since there were drinkers/singers = $$$$$ in the house. I shut the music off @ 1:30 and got some nice bonus $$s at the end of the night. Making the owner happy helps me keep the gig. I had my usual 20+ singers and a few that came in late. Worked for me.

Yes, I too worked it as an extra night. I had to talk the (new) owner into it, she hadn't even considered it being busy. We weren't packed, but did pretty well....MrD

Black Wednesday was really dark here on the border in Nogales, Az.
Made it almost through the first rotation in a packed house, and the power went out! Some motorist decided to take out a transformer up the interstate, and our little berg, and three others were without electric from 10 - 2. Bar tabs were rung out before the battery backup gave out, and from 10:30 to 12:00 it was candles and cash. Most Hung around not knowing how long we were going to be in the dark, and no place any better to go to!
Once the Banos (Bathrooms) started backing up due to no water pressure, the bar had to close due to health concerns. I left at midnight with my computer, and came back to pack up on Friday since the bar was closed on Thanksgiving.
Paid full pop, ( Not Guaranteed ) but I've been doing that gig for 14 years, so I've seen more owners, bartenders, and change in clientele, than the beer vendors. Packed up and headed to my Friday gig to compete with the bands in the area. I've been at the Friday gig for 7 yrs, and you talk about management changes ( been through 6 in 7 years) its a resort hotel that just has trouble keeping the place ( occupancy ) full. My gig is pretty secure as long as the bottom line on Friday stays good. Most are feeling the economy woes!
Don't need to hear about dark Wednesday!

Does it have a hemi?.......
In either case, diving, or riding around in the gulf would be a cool job in my opinion.
25 years ago, we used to have a lot of fun with the water cops in D.C. Once when we tried to outrun them by going under a low bridge, they called in a police helicopter to hover over us, and make us turn around back to the waiting harbor police boat. We didn,t get in trouble, they just laughed because they won that round of cat and mouse. With all thats happened since then, of course the good days are gone forever up there.
On occasion, we would even take a few laps around the D.C. tidal basin at night, if someone tried that today, they would probably be blown out of the water.Yes, those were the days, lots of fun, and beer.........
BTW...welcome........Ron
