Love the video !
When he first called me Karaoke chick I was walking by him to the bathroom and he grabbed my arm and said it. I looked him straight in the eye and said my name is Babs. The second time he said it he needed help finding a song. I asked him please call me Babs. I was only slightly irritated by then. So you see he was given fair warning.
I'll give people the benefit of the doubt almost always. Especially if they are new. Like karen said sometimes you have to teach people to respect you.
I had an older gentelmen introduce himself to me out on the porch where we smoke. I don't think he even realized I was the karaoke person. He says to me "You have really big boobs". My response " Well that is very inappropriate" and I turned my back to him.
He later came up to me and apologized. He has been nothing but respectful since. Some men just need to know the boundaries.

As usual, you handled it!
As to "dude", I don't want to be called "dude". From where I originate it is not a welcomed nickname. And only of late has it taken on a connotation of simple meaning "guy"!
I literally cringe ever time hear people refer to Sarah Palin's husband as the "first dude". How ridiculous!
But someday soon, "dude" will leave the vernacular and return to obscurity where it rightfully belongs!
PER MERRIAM WEBSTER Function: noun Etymology: origin unknown Date: 1883
1: a man extremely fastidious in dress and manner : dandy 2: a city dweller unfamiliar with life on the range ; especially : an Easterner in the West 3: fellow , guy —sometimes used informally as a term of address <hey, dude,
See I totally understand that. Depending on the area you live and your age it can be very rude. My father would be put back by someone who called him dude. But the twenty something crowd uses it when they talk to their friends. It used to be the word man after everything, now it's dude. Through the years it's turned into a slang way to address a friend. The older generation find it odd and disrespectful.
I wouldn't correct a son for calling his friend dude, but I certainly would be embarrassed if he called his family doctor dude. There is a time and a place.

Soooo.... I guess those guys must have been having quite a discussion at the bar about "the karaoke chick with big boobs." JUST KIDDING, please don't take offense, it's just my crazy sense of humor.

I can't think of to many things someone could say to me that I would take personally , considering we work with drunk people, if i were in line at the store or somewhere it would be different but then again i am a "dude" and believe that drunk or not people should respect the lasies no matter of there profession.

I guess what I am saying is you give everyone the benefit of the doubt the first time because you haven't set boundaries with this new person yet. After you tell someone what is expected they should be respectful enough not to do it again knowing it bothers you.
Rosario - no offense taken it was a joke. I do think it is harder for a woman to host karaoke then a man. I don't think Matt has anyone talking about his moobies or maybe he does.

Just as bad in my mind, and horrible social etiquette, is when you sit down in a nice restaurant and the young staff persist in referring to their customers as "you guys." "You guys want anything else?" Irritates me. It happens so often that now I notice when it DOESN'T happen. Guess my age is rearing its ugly head, but I sure would not have referred to anyone my parents' age as "you guys" anywhere, any time.

I think "Chick" would be a compliment. If he had meant to insult you it would have been "Karaoke-Bitc*" or something of that ilk. If someone wanted to call me "Karaoke-Stud" I could live with that. Not that I don't understand how you felt. One of my pet peeves is when a bartenderess calls me "Hon" as if I don't deserve a name. It gets under my skin in a hurry. I don't think you over reacted. However, if you don't believe that you or anyone is being shown the proper respect it would be well to remember that respect is not granted it is earned.

Since I have started doing karaoke, I try to be quite a bit warmer than my formerly pretty-cold personality. I use lots of hons and dears with the women, and a lot of them are waitri or bartenders. They tend to do it compulsively too, and don't seem to mind. The funny thing is that the singers don't seem to mind, either. Almost the other way around.
I don't know what to use with the guys except the occasional "big guy".

People sometimes refer to me as Karaoke Guy/Dude. I think it's always the tone / the way they say it, that it either bothers me or not. On top my name is on the Songbooks and on the Screen. wtf?
What I usually do, if someones walks up to me and asks in a rude way: "Hey you, are you the Karaoke dude?" my answer is "Ehm, no... that would be my brother. He was here a second ago. I'm sure, he will be right back."

Babs, obviously no one can or should dictate your own personal sensibility threshold. But since you asked, yes, I do think you overreacted. He wasn't calling you a bi**h, or broad, or anything universally deemed derogatory or insulting. I regularly introduce female singers as "chicks" or even "hot chicks". Haven't heard from one yet who didn't find it flattering. Babs @ Fri Dec 12, 2008 10:57 am wrote: I had an older gentelmen introduce himself to me out on the porch where we smoke. Again, you are entitled to your own sensibilities. But you're not at the opera or an art gallery. You're in a BAR! DO you have large breasts? It's just a statement of fact! Seems it would have been less confrontational and more disarming to smile and just say, "Thanks!" or just ignore him and keep walking. Doesn't seem like the old guy meant to be rude or was coming onto you. Why take someone to task for that? Babs @ Fri Dec 12, 2008 10:57 am wrote: Some men just need to know the boundaries. Just my opinion.

I know this was directed to Babs, but I felt compelled to throw in my 3 pennies worth (inflation, you know!).

That's right, you're in a bar, not a strip joint. At any rate, a man speaking to a woman in that manner is TOTALLY unacceptable, no matter where you are. It's NOT just a statement of fact. It's something that is usually demeaning to the recipient. Some guys will just never get it... If you ignore something like that or worse yet, smile and say thanks, you might as well plaster a sign on your forehead that says " Go ahead and disrespect me because I'm OK with that". DangerousDanKaraoke @ Sun Dec 14, 2008 9:55 pm wrote: Do you think female bartenders or waitresses find the need to establish "boundaries" or just smile and keep on working. YES!!!! Having worked in the bar business for over 20 years I can, WITHOUT A DOUBT, tell you that women MUST establish hard and fast bounaries that may appear to you to be strict. But if you don't, one guy gets away with saying something like that, the next guy hears it and says something a little more derrogatory, then the next, and so on down the line until you have the guys thinking its OK to grab the girls. Yes, it DOES and HAS happened exactly like that. Flirting is one thing.
Rude is quite another.
If you don't know the difference, I pity you and all your girlfriends (if you can get one), past, present, and future.
Edit: As an short aside, when I worked in the bars, it was always hands off, no matter what, even for my hubby. Why? Because some newbie comes in, see a guy (who happens to be my hubby, but he doesn't know that) grabbing the bartender/waitress (me), and next thing you know, he tries it too.
And yes, when I first started in the bar, this happened to me too, hence the rule.

I don't disagree with the way that Babs handled the situation at all, "Chick" as a word isn't insulting to me, but rather the way and which it is said, and if someone is coming across and disrespectful and who has been told in various ways to cool it, then yes Babs should have acted as she did.
I must admit, I tend to take a different approach with the drunks. I tend to use humour and science to defuse a situation in private, and in extream circumstances take it to the microphone so that the customers are aware there is a problem.
Customer ...."My you have big boobs"
me.... "I deserve them, alot of prayer at age 13 went into this pair"
Customer..."You're lovely your are"
me... "can you write a reference to my parents they'll never believe it otherwise
Customer... "I love your arse"
Me... "Thank you, I have my parents to that for that... Just think what would have happened if they hadn't got together that fateful night in Pontins hoilday park and given me these genes/ Jeans"
Customer... "Lord you're fit"
Me..."ahhh it's my diet of redbull, pro plus and nicoteen, I'd recomend it to anyone".
The phrase "Chick" wouldn't bother me, there are far worse words... but if i was offended, I may be tempted to sing Ting Tings thats not my name and alter a few phrases.
Most drunks can't respond to humour quickly enough, to look cool so they tend to back off.
I Have the no touching rule as well, most people never guess that its my partner who packs down the equipment at the end of the night... but then the rule is in place for two reasons. One I wouldn't want people to assume it isn't my partner and its a free for all and second, I feel as a female host it's best to look unobtainable.
