I would have to disagree. I recently saw a song on SBI and I was a little stunned. It's both dumb as a song, and even dumber as a karaoke track, both in origin and lyrics, as it's simply one line repeated over and over.
The theme song from America's Next Top Model.

My nomination is Short Shorts by The Royal Teens
"Who wears short shorts
We wear short shorts
they're such short shorts
we like short shorts"
That's the whole song right there. Why would Sound Choice include that in The Foundation?
What might be worse is that it made it to #3 on the charts back in the (what must have been a bad) day.
I know this is a matter of taste and I wouldn't be surprised if one of my favorites was nominated by someone else.
Tom
I suppose that song has sentimental value. It was used by Nair for years on their tv commercials back in 80's and I think even the 70's.

As far as an actually song that was somewhat of a hit and got a good bit of radio play....anyone ever try to do "I wanna be a cowboy" by Boys Don't Cry?
Very dumb, in a good way, sorta like a bruce campbell movie in a song.
Ted, oh Ted, fighting off danger...
and if you know the song real well you can turn it into a outrageously dumb/funny duet!
...makes me feel quite dirty!

close second and one of my favorite songs - electric six -danger! high voltage

i'm an expert on dumbness

Bill, you probably already have it. It's on Music Maestro 6047 (which has "Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah," "Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavor," and "Mississippi Squirrel Revival" on it (3 songs that I bought that disc for... and it was my very first CDG purchase). Just about every KJ I know has that disc in their library.

Generally speaking, the biggest problem with PBTDL is the quality of the karaoke track and not the quality of the singers.
And, unless both singers, particularly the male, knows the song dead-on, no version but DK has a chance of working, and even that version is missing a part. The AH version is good instrumentally but lacks several of the parts and doesn't provide the narration for the baseball game, so the singers must be quite familiar with the song to pull off that version. Most other versions are bad enough that only the most accomplished at singing PBTDL will have a change at succeeding
Yes, I have heard it done well many times by "locals" here in S. Florida. The last couple I heard nail it were tourists, however!

When I was a little biddy boy
My grandma bought me a cute little toy
Two Silver bells on a string
She told me it was my ding-a-ling-a-ling
My Ding-A-Ling My Ding-A-Ling won't you play with My Ding-A-Ling
My Ding-A-Ling My Ding-A-Ling won't you play with My Ding-A-Ling
When I was little boy In Grammar school
Always went by the very best rule
But Evertime the bell would ring
You'd catch me playing with my ding-a-ling
Once while climbing the garden wall,
Slipped and fell had a very bad fall
I fell so hard I heard birds sing,
But I held on to My ding-a-ling
Once while swimming cross turtle creek
Man them snappers right at my feet
Sure was hard swimming cross that thing
with both hands holding my dingaling
Now this here song it ain't so bad
Prettiest little song that you ever had
And those of you who will not sing
must be playing with your on Ding-a-ling

Umm, and then mama took me to grammar school
But I stopped off in the vestibule
Every time that bell would ring
Catch me playing with
My Ding-A-Ling-A-Ling
CHORUS
Once I was climbing the garden wall
I slipped and had a terrible fall
I fell so hard I heard bells ring
But held onto
My Ding-A-Ling-A-Ling
CHORUS
Umm, once I was swimming cross Turtle Creek
Man them snappers all around my feet
Sure was hard swimming cross that thing
With both hands holding
My Ding-A-Ling-A-Ling

Most of the songs mentioned here I can defend, as they get a good reaction, or are quietly crowd favorites or guilty pleasures...
BUT, what REALLY makes me cringe as stupid on 2 levels; the first level being that it is on karaoke, the second being that someone would choose to sing it, is a song such as Cleaning Out My Closet by Eminem. YES, it has a good beat, but the song is basically a journal entry with specific events in the life of Marshall Mathers and his wife, children and family. Everytime I see someone do that song, I just cringe.
Aargh! !

I agree with you about that Eminem song. In fact, I penned my own words to his ditty, entitled "Filling Your Head With Horse-s---"
Basically, my version admonishes the artist for airing such personal stuff in public, blaming his parents for everything, and offering no opportunity for the "offenders" to be forgiven
I actually performed my version once, though I'm not sure why?

Black Sabbath - "War Pigs" - good song for the jukebox but not for karaoke, barely any actual singing, instrumental wayyy too long.
South Park/Cartman version of "Come Sail Away" - Can't stand this version. The original is OK if done by a decent singer AND it's a slow night.
Elvis Presley - "Suspicious Minds" - song woud be GREAT if it weren't for the "Caught in a trap...." ending which seems to repeat forever, and ever, and ever....most singers have the KJ stop it early.
"Take Me Out to the Ballgame" - Fine for the ballpark but just not a karaoke song.
EDIT: And as for "Paradise by the dashboard lights" - I actually think this is a good karaoke song, given the following requirements are met:
a.) Both singers know the song well
b.) Both singers can carry a tune
c.) The song takes both singers' turn in the rotation OR it's a slow night.
I have sang Paradise many a time and I think the SC version is pretty damn good (sounds great!). I can do without the baseball game announcer part - would rather take a beer break then anyhow

If that's the case, then get yourself either the Sunfly Version or the Zoom version.... Zoom being the best version because it credited/recognized more of the Female parts than ANY other version out there.
Both of these manufacturers cut the naration part completely, so it goes from,
"We're gonna go all the way tonight. We're gonna go all the way, tonight's the night."
to
"Stop Right there!!!!..."
immediately.

I dunno if "Feliz Navidad" is on karaoke ... but man, would I dread hearing it.
Yeah, War Pigs is a bad choice. (Although maybe a good one if the KJ wanted to get away for a smoke!) Suspicious Minds isn't so bad, I've been seeing it lately and didn't notice the outro being a problem. Lots of songs have long outros.
