The PRS seem to think we're all winning out of this recession.

I don't think we can read too much into that though. Things are changing so fast these days.

Has it not occured to the PRS that the increase in Karaoke Tracks coming up in their survey is the number of illegal rigs popping up everywhere.... Their surveys just show whats being sung, not how the songs were puchased etc. All the illegal rigs round my way are poor quality bar one and they all go out at a much lower price than me. Doesn't mean karaoke is booming, just that more pubs are employing "matie-boy from down the road, with his 40,000 songs and £10 an hour attitude".

BTW although that list is probably accurate.... my show ruined their statstics, when they visited us, they had Weird Al, Heidi Newfield, Iron Maiden and Dwight Yokam the only traditional karaoke song they heard was
"Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me"

Yes.

I worked two venues up until this last weekend. It's kind of funny because the two places are right next door to each other. One owner is feeling the pinch big time and told me after last week's show he couldn't afford me any longer. At the other place we're doing great.

Economy is definitely taking a toll in general. Like Karen said we're in the middle of a deep freeze here in the NW and few people are venturing. The guy that pulled the plug on me last week will call me when things pick up but I doubt I will go back. Lots of drama including his own divorce and bartender blues (tips down = not so happy bartenders) and I think that has a huge impact as it spills over into the crowd and no one appreciates it. I don't like associating my shows with other people's laundry.

I passed up multiple private party invites this past year because I was working both Fri and Sat (which spilled into Sunday to get my gear back to my other venue), and since I can keep my gear at my Wed/Fri venue I don't have to pack it up every week, so I can advertise for private parties now with much less hassle. I'm liking the idea of having some Sat/Sun time because with my day job it wears me out completely doing three gigs a week (and I got a new girl I'd like to spend some time with). :)

Things are still OK here. There's been some ups and downs, but my Wed night gig keeps getting better and better. I assumed that the mid-week gigs would get hit the hardest. Maybe people around here are just getting more picky about where to spend their money.

One of the local KJs e-mailed me to come to his first gig at a restaurant on a Friday. I went, and saw he had about 20 people from his e-mail list attending. There was not a single "walk-in" (nonsinging) customer there! I think the situation is tough for businesses with or without karaoke right now.

It'd be great if everyone posted the general area they are in if it isn't evident in the profile - I'm sure the economy is affecting everyone a little differently and it'd be interesting to see where/how.
