Do any of you have "plug and play" capabilities?

You will have to give context. That could pertain to a dozen different things. Plug and play *what*?

If you are referring to a computer then all windows based computers have plug and play.

You simply add the new hardware to your computer turn it on and the computer recognizes it as something new and will guide you through the installation process.

That is unless at some point you turned plug and play off

Do ya'll have capabilities where someone can bring a guitar, sax, or whatever they wish to play and sing on and with your system?

I do, but don't allow it. It isn't open night to jam. It is karaoke.

Like Babs, I do have the ability, but it isn't open jam night, it's karaoke! The most i'll let someone do is a harmonica, only because it doesn't require any set up or extra mixing.

I've got a guy who brings his harmonica to play during Skynyrd's "I Know A Little", and its only because I know he'll do a good job that I let it pass.

I have had people "accompany" themselves with harmonica and guitar. I also have had an alto sax player. I have no problem with people providing any form of MUSICAL entertainment at karaoke! What's the difference?

I used to have an "anything goes" policy at first but quickly limited it to karaoke only.

Several problems emerged:
Too much stage time... karaoke tracks eliminate this problem.
Not enough energy... a strumming guitar isn't the same vibe as a karaoke track.
Unfamiliar material... usually these types of musicians want to do original compositions.

Bottom line is that it wasn't going over. Nothing against it personally.

There is a club in the area that has open mic nights on Wad and Sun. That's where I tell them to head.

Every performance I referred to above was accompanied by a karoake track and other than plugging in the guitar no special accomodations were made. I would not be in support of an "anything goes musically" show! But I can defend an anything goes in accompaniment to a karaoke track, including the worst singers in the world!

The problem with letting people plug in instuments is the night turns into a jam night.

Problem one: The instrument people I've had bother singers to do songs they don't want to, so they can play along or want to play along to a tract without a singer which is extremely boring. It usually sounds like a little kid practicing. People start complaining that if this person wants to play an instument they should be in a band or at home practicing.

Problem two: if you let one person do it you have others who start bringing in instruments. People don't mind one person bringing in an instrument, but more than one disturbs what they consider karaoke. Next thing you know a lot of the night is instruments and no singing. People want to sing and feel this is just taking up singers time.

I allow people to use harmonicas, but that is it. This is just my experience. I really don't care personally. It is my karaoke people who end up having a problem with it. The singers are my bread and butter not the musicians, so the decision was easy.

An acoustic guitar is easier pulled off just plugging in and going, an electric guitar requires a direct box to sound good - especially if they are using some sort of modeling pedal or stomp box of any kind. Then for the non acoustic, they want a mic to be pointed at the guitar. Never had a sax before ( which would be kind of cool actually). Extra mixing required - not a big deal as I also do live bands as well, but I am not being paid to do this during karaoke. And as Babs said, the instrument players start bugging the karaoke players more into songs that the singer might not really want to do. I actually had one guy ask if he could bring in his electronic drum kit - yeah,,,,.....um........NO!
Now couple the worst singer WITH the worst instrument player & it's not a good combo for a karaoke show. I'll stick with my karaoke only format

Some very sage advice I'll have to consider for the future.

Up til now, every musician I've dealt with was known to me from their performances at other local shows. I can see, though, how oddballs can get everything off track

Yea, there's nothing wrong with somebody playing with karaoke tracks. Actually people love it.

My plug is always ready and waiting.....just have a hard time finding something to plug into, and somebody willing to play.....

A band member who sings at my show wants to rent my system to play with a band he is helping out for a benefit gig.I think it will be vocals only might run a drum kit also in addition to the drummer. I doubt if we will mic any of the instruments.

I can, and believe any decent component system can. However, I don't due to time constraints, venue preference ( so far), and a personal preferance for karaoke.

I DO do sound work on occasion for local lounge singers, and they will sometimes plug in an instrument. No bands though.....
