This year by FAR beat last year! We had the WHOLE BAR singing at the same time on at least three consecutive songs! The air of comraderie was AWESOME!
I will post pics as soon as I can find my adapter for my mini SD card so I can upload pics.
Oh, and the bar that dropped me now wants me back, as I predicted. He has been dead ever since I left. We will see if we can negotiate something.
Happy New Year, everyone!

Eh.. wish my New Years' was like that. The KJ boldly told the room at 12:15 or so "This is New Year's! You people have picked 5 depressing, slow songs and I refuse to play them. We're supposed to be partying!"

I'm pragmatic enough to understand the KJ runs the show, and that the sign up list is not inviolable. Maybe people get shuffled a few spots.

But to deliberately skip singers was just crass. (Yes, I was skipped, and no my song was not slow and depressing.) If he really thought the choices were bad, he should have at least invited the people up one at a time, and tried to negotiate other songs.

I wound up doing an all dj show. it went well and was fun, at about 1am everyone moved to the bar down the street so i was free to pack up and go. I stopped at the bar where everyone had gone shortly after there DJ had left after refusing more money to continue. I was asked to set up and play , but passed having left my speakers for the show on friday. Im hoping to pick up a sat a month there soon. one of my "friends" was working there, charging huge money and being kinda a jerk. he buys his own bar on monday and does not want to do the shows there any more so i am going to go get it.

Started at 9. Was a SRO crowd (cap is 200 seating). Had 40 singers - down from last years 58. Did our annual Lucky 7 contest at 10:35, ran dj music from 11:47-12:09 throughout the countdown, then finished out the singers until 1:30. No problems arose at all, great night overall!

After last night I feel I'm finally getting somewhere with this sleepy little Elks lodge I've been doing occasional Fridays in. I was brought in specifically to "enlarge the tent." What they meant was they wanted to see more people in there under... say... retirement age...

Boy we had that last night! A bar packed with a well rounded age group singing literally all styles that met the language restriction I reluctantly put on this particular room. In fact the grossest thing done was by an old drunk who spun "Don't Close Your Eyes" into "Don't Close Your Thighs" with verses to go along. Grossed me out anyway... and it didn't go over to say the least...

Anyway afterwards the manager told me they broke two grand at the bar, which is totally amazing for this place... the drink prices are practically half what they are in a public bar. I got the feeling this was way beyond what they did in previous years with bands. I went over an hour over until 1:45 and was paid an extra $100.

I know it was NYE but I'm feeling pretty good right now. The reality of this place will set in later this month.

You are making heroic progress for an Elk's. We had a friend booked to run karaoke at a Lodge and he started the night off with a Frank Sinatra song. After that, no one would put in a song. They just kept putting in requests for HIM to sing. He did two hours of Frank Sinatra by himself and all were happy.

Me & a group of 20 YO's used to sing this song that way back in the early 90's. Went over big back then. Instead of You'll Find More Love - You'll Find More Meat then you've ever known. Young & stupid we were, this was back before the bar made the no profanity rule on stage.

I'd love to take full credit for last night, but I'm just a small part of what they are trying to do. The present Grand Master (I think that's what they call them) is a pretty savvy successful businesswoman, not the usual good ol' boy at all. She has brought in a new young manager, who in turn has brought in his own team of young energetic bartenders and servers.

There is always something happening on Fridays... either me or a DJ. We're all doing the best we can to make younger patrons feel at home when they come in.

This room still faces tremendous long term obstacles. Last night was the last time anyone could light up in an Oregon bar, and like all Oregon bars this one depends heavily on gambling revenue from the slot and poker machines. It hasn't escaped our notice that those players are mostly chain smoking as they gamble... it's an addiction thing.

They are also being quite liberal about signing in non-members (or just waiving them in) and at some time in the future that will have to change.

The old guard didn't like any of this at first but they seem to be accepting it now that business has improved. Last night was the first without a complaint from them directed towards me anyway.

Wow the Rose Bowl is boring this year. I'm back on the computer...so here's some more!

Here's a little story from last night that illustrates the divisions within this room. The old guard informed me that the lodge celebrates NYE "New York" style at 9:00. So at 9 I dutifully announced that it's New Year's in New York and sang a quick Auld Lang Syne. Back at the bar there were a few horns being tooted and a little confetti thrown, but by and large the room itself was just giving me this blank WTF stare...

So I then said that of course we were also going to celebrate at midnight. And sure thing that was the big one.

Back to the game...

You know Lon when you're young you can get away with just about anything. :D

My guy last night was maybe 75, hadn't shaved in several days, and was stumbling drunk. That projected a different sort of image...

The sad thing about it is I could tell he has a good voice. He told me later that he used to sing in country bands. Had he been more sober and sung it straight it would have gone down much better than it did with him trying to be hip.

Started at 7:30 - playing music. Filled up about 8.

DJ'd from 8-9 getting people up & dancing, Motown, Pop, Disco. During that did a "shots" game (first one back with a pair of tights can do a shot, or nominate someone to do 2).

9pm started the karaoke and had a list as long as my arm.

11:45 - stopped the karaoke (at owners request and because queue was getting short) and the bar stopped serving for 30 mins so they could celebrate too (everyone knew this was to happen, so they all bought their drinks beforehand). Played the bells, auld lang syne thanked the staff then went into some real "jump around" music, letting everyone go mental for a bit. Continued into party-pop until about 2am.

Left the gear setup and partied with the crowd on a playlist for 30 mins, eventually everyone leaves, so we have a little late drink and head home with some friends.

Played truth or dare and guitar hero till 5am.

Well we had a pretty good NYE, we pry had about 110-120 people for the Elvis show till just after midnight. Wasn't much Karaoke, only about 10 songs. We stayed open just a little bit past normal and closed down at owners request with about 25 or so people still there. All in all, it was a good night. One thing that was good was Saturday night...we had a nice crowd again for a change. Hopefully it keeps picking back up, December was a quiet month. Glad to hear about everyone elses' good NYE parties. Keep it rockin'......MrD

I was surprised to have such a big crowd Friday after NYE. Saturday was on the slow side. I think people were finally partied out. LMAO
