I get delayed on occasion for games but it's not that often and if it's going to happen it's most likely going to conflict with the entire season ("My team is doing GOOD!"). However I just make sure I'm ready to roll into my gig when the game is over and spend the time talking with folks. I'll generally have a list of singers ready to roll into the night and if you take the time you can generally get the life-of-the-party person from the large crowd to sing 5th or 6th in your rotation.
Don't look at the sports crowd as an obstacle. Look at them as an opportunity to find more regular singers.

Not sure that I understand your purpose for having the "live of the party" person singing 4th or 5th in the rotation after an night of footbal?

Been my observation that if you keep them there for a couple of singers they get another pitcher or two and hang around to at least hear the "life of the party" sing. Just short enough to not be frustrating but long enough to whet their ears. It gives them time to listen to others and think about what they might sing. Point is keeping them in a bar a little longer in the hopes they stay even longer than that.
It works about 40% of the time for me and has resulted in a few new singers turning into regulars. Yes, it's very contrived, but it's all part of the business of keeping folks entertained and in the bar.

I see your point and how it might work, assuming you can get the "life of the party" up to sing!
