If you install commercial software, you have too. They have often been corrupted with trojans. (If you use Sax N Dotty's or some other program that needs Winamp, all that changes, of course. Winamp will frequently be a target.)
mkcy, I know you have some great credentials, and I agree with a few things you mention above, but as I understand it, virus/trojan/spywares target your operating system, following any accessable path, a to b to c....etc....most often embedding itself in the registry.......hey, I'm just a dummy here, so please just consider anything I say just an opinion....... ...peace

They target an operating system. But they are just a collection of bytes. If you don't do something with those bytes, they can't bite you.
If a virus-infected file is there, no problem. If you process that file with a certain program, then that program could read those bytes and do something stupid. The two most likely programs, historically, to have a problem with virus-infected files are MS Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player. They have had many, many, security holes found in them and exploited.
If you double-click on a file, good luck -- you are counting on the default program that processes files of that type to be secure.
But if you access that file with CompuHost or MTU Hoster, neither of which to my knowledge has ever had a security exploit in the wild, then you are probably pretty safe. If you access it with an old version of Winamp (i.e. Sax N' Dotty's), you may indeed be in trouble.
The reason people tell computer neophytes not to use a Jump drive is because they don't know what they are doing and are liable to double-click the file. That could be a problem. But if you know what you are doing, you are safe.
I would recommend in general that you don't use a thump/jump/USB drive from others unless you trust either them or yourself a lot. I trust myself a lot in that regard because of my thirty years of computer experience, so I can use them. (Famous last words, I know.) Others may want to steer clear.

well as a person with almost thirty years of experience in computers, I would recommend NOT using them.
The double-click is what MOST people know.
I've worked around infected files too and not tanked my system. I had pictures that were corrupted I managed to fix, documents I managed to clean or isolate enough to read them into a new document and resolve the issue.
But for advising OTHERS on how to do stuff like that? Not on a public forum like this. Not EVER!
We have people who can't resolve many issues (and I'm ONE of those in some areas)... to me, it's just dangerous to say things like trusting jump drives from other people. Because some yutz out there will read that or part of that and go "Oh, it's SAFE. MCKYJ57 says so!" And then next thing you know we're getting questions about "I got a virus" or "what do you do when you can't play your files anymore" or "my system is dragging down something fierce"...
BRRRrrrrr! Just too darned scary for me!

When I use usb drives, I am playing mp3+g files ONLY. There is yet to be a known virus attack spread through the use of an mp3.
I am with Knightshow as to advising people how to use them, etc, as people tend to not follow directions too well. I, on the other hand, also have years of experience with computers and have yet to get a virus or even see an attempt at one being put on my computer. This is solely due to the fact that I am vigilant and know what I am doing.
If you don't click it, it can't do anything. Period.

Getting back to the topic... Babs @ Fri Jan 09, 2009 1:33 pm wrote: I usually don't mention I'm a KJ when I go to other people's shows. Like when I cop pulls you over for a ticket and you flash him your badge. However I almost always throw a couple of bucks into the KJ's jar when I make my requestkameragurl @ Fri Jan 09, 2009 2:08 pm wrote: The KJ's in my area know who we are how long myself andf my better half have been around also. I would certainly be up at the stage calling him on his $#!+.

Not to be antagonistic but I recall you mentioned in a prior thread that you didn't mind taking a financial bribe to bring up a singer - now if you were at a show and the host took a financial bribe to bring someone up twice before you, would you still go up and call him on his $#!+? Seems kind of hypocritical.

k I think your quote didn't get noted correctly. All it showed was you quoting kameragurl. But, you did repeat the specific lines in a different color..... maybe this will help..... I'm curious to see a response too.

Seems kind of hypocritical. Whenever there's been that happenstance - and it is infrequent - it is always someone who has not already sung. Those who have already sung and there are people waiting who have not? I don't care what size the bill they wave at me...they have to wait their turn.
