Does anyone know if Just Karaoke from Tricerasoft can play regular Karaoke CDs in your CD drive?
I tried with autokdj and it won't. Karafun WILL.
I'll be hosting in a few days and the place I'll be hosting at, I KNOW a couple of people who are regulars bring their own disks.

I am not familiar with it. However, why not just bring a player as well? It would probably be easier. Most of the Hosts that I know do this if they hace a PC based show.
I know you said this is just for a few days, but please keep in mind that PC drives are not meant for this sort of useage, and will crap out or break sooner than later.

I don't know if it does, but it's key changer is abysmal. If you don't care about key change, it works OK.

I ordered a VGA switch box and I have a DVD/CD player that plays Karaoke disks, but I haven't received the switch box yet from ebay and I host on Thurs and on Sat.
My only interest in Just Karaoke is that it's only $25 and if it can play Karaoke CDs from the laptop internal drive that would be a good temporary solution.
I was planning on buying Hoster in the not-too-distant-future because for $185 or whatever it is, it comes with the ability to make song books included in the price which means I don't have to spend another $100 for a song book program.
Also, the gal where I'm going to host at uses Hoster. We may work together some in the future too and it just seems like it would be good if we were both using the same program. She usually leaves her equipment at the VFW because she is an officer and she hosts there 3 nights a week. I'm just filling in for her this time while she's out of town. She's very popular and can probably get me more jobs.

I know people probably get tired of hearing me say this, but one of the best things about Hoster is the ability to upload and play discs for people. No need to have a player. Doesn't happen all that often if you have a good selection. Hoster has been such a great program for us.

but it's not infallable, Karen.
I've had a couple times when the guy that had a hoster show couldn't import my discs... and therefore wouldn't accept customer discs. These weren't even compilation discs but manu's custom burns! When it hung, he actually had to reboot his computer to get hoster to retry and then had to boot again. At another occurance, in another part of the country, a host had trouble reading the disc, yet when I took it home, it played just fine.
What do you do about any cdg that has copy protection??

I don't know this for a fact, but I believe with the newer computers there will be less problems reading Karaoke CDs. knightshow may have been at a couple of Karoke shows where they were using older PCs and it may have had nothing to do with Hoster. Just a guess . . .

No it's some discs were recorded with MediaCloq - copy protection - that wasn't able to be read in ANY computer and even some dvd players that were computer driven. Nothing to do with Hoster, just the fact that Hoster can't read those discs. There aren't that many really, SC did a small batch between 8701-8735 & a handful of other numbers, but have since taken it off & reissused those discs without the MC. TopTunes were another that I believe had some copy protection, but not sure, I know there was another manu or two that did have it for a while as well.

When you tried it with autokdj had you also installed the CDG plugin? (not talking about the mp3&g one here)

RLC, I downloaded and installed that program yesterday and it still didn't read the tracks off my laptop's internal CD drive. I have a feeling that if I uninstalled autokdj from winamp and just used the yannick CDG disk player program it would work, Can I use the Pacemaker plugin with it? RLC you are a wealth of information!

Not guaranteeing infallability but can say that we've not yet had a disc brought in by a singer that wouldn't load for us. Just luck, I guess, because I couldn't load my medicloq protected CDGs - still have them but unless I have a player, I can't really use them. Thankfully it's only 5-6 discs. Had a friend bring in their comps last week - very, very well used CDGs - they take them everywhere, they've been played in every kind of machine there is. Popped it in my PC shuttle and was able to load any of their songs.
I have yet to reboot in a show (and our system gets a LOT of play time) ((TOUCH WOOD!)) and have had very good success uploading singer's songs.

Uninstalling autokdj shouldn't make any difference as it is just another Winamp plugin. It will either work or will not work, although sometimes you can trick it into thinking your cd drive is cdg capable(and sometimes you can't) It is an older plugin and unfortunately the only one like it except for this one http://www.winamp.com/plugins/details/145865 (which is basically the same thing and they were both designed to work with cdg capable drives only, unlike some of the newer software today that work with a variety of cd drives....but it was worth a try. Sorry it didn't work.

Karafun reads any Karaoke CD I've tried in my laptop. They play just fine except that in Karafun they are listed in the playlist as Track 1, Track 2 etc.
Even though most people here seem to think Karafun is a crappy program, I've used it at home nearly every day for almost a year with nearly no problems whatsoever. I did have a couple of problems on one of my XP computers, but on my Vista laptop it's VERY stable. The key change works great every time and it has tempo change too which some other programs don't have. It's not a hosting program, it doesn't have any hosting features, but it has worked fine for me for rehearsing.
autokdj seems to work fine now too, now that I've learned how to use it. It wasn't clear to me how to get started, but I got some help with the basics and now it seems fairly simple, at least to operate the basics. It seems to have a decent search feature too.
Anyway, I ordered a switch box and when it comes I can just use my DVD/CD player for any discs people bring.

Just an add on: they actually started experimenting with it earlier. Some of the 8400 series discs have it as well...

Anyway the disc in question worked on one of his systems, and then wouldn't work on his second. Brand new system. He siad he'd take it home and update his drivers...
the point I was making is it's NOT infallible. After having faced this three times total, I just find it preferable to have a secondary disc player on hand for customer cdgs.
In all three cases, I took the same cdg home and played it in my karaoke player and was also able to extract the track on my home pc. Not a thing wrong with the discs.

Actually these were done after the 8700 series fiasco. The original 8400 series was fine - I have them. Like I said a handful of other numbers did get the MC treatment as well when they were reissued, but quickly stopped & re-reissued without.

I've got a switch box coming so there won't be any need for me to play any disks from my laptop. It's a pain in the keester anyways and it wastes a bunch of time. I fi;lled in for another host Thursday night and I must have had a disk handed to me 10 times or more. First you need to get the drive open-few seconds, then insert-few seconds, close it and wait for windows to read the disc-half a minute, go through the list and find the track, select the track, start the track playing. Bah, a three minute song take six minutes by the time you remove the disk and give it back. That's 10 songs per hour. That's a horribly slow show where 10 sing instead of 15 that would normally get up. I'm bringing my player next time and an extra monitor. It's worth the extra hassle IMO.
