After reading a current thread I realize that I am not the only one having a problem with my s-video plug loosening up and/or "falling" out of my computer during a show.

Can anyone recommend a product/brand that isn't prone to doing this?

I never had that happen... which product are you using? Is your pc or laptop connection worn, or is it the part that's worn?

I have had my S-Video cable that connects to my RF modulator loosen during a performance. I have used that Modulator for many years, so I replaced it as well as the cable and have had no problems since. But I have never had it fall out of my computer.

As an eng/tech I could "float" from venue to venue and eliminate problems. I hard wire many things to eliminate a plug on one end even in the mixer rack. All it takes is a soldering iron, solder and a wee bit of knowledge.

Here is a post on my forum from years ago

Quote:
For those with a soldering iron it is easy to make a S-Video to composite video adapter.

Image

A 470 pf (ceramic) capacitor is placed from pin 1 to 4 on the s-video plug. All it does is insert the the color burst ( used to sync the color )back into the raw video.

I can also make a video or audio distribution amp for less than $2 per stage..

I think you may be right, I do notice that my S-Video plug is loose in the Laptop so it could be the reason why Vista looses connection and not necessarily because it's not going to any screen. A very good observation, I'll try to leave my screens off without movign the notebook and see if it still reverts to single display.

Another alternative would be a VGA to RCA/S-Video output. Every laptop (at least the majority) should come with a VGA output. They sell them on eBay for about $5 including shipping.

Not 100% sure I follow. Is the issue that your s-video connector gets unplugged accidentally? If so...

I have a piece of rubber thats sort of this shape:

O---

The able can just fit through the hole of the O, it certainly won't pull out due to the bit where the connector meets the cable and gets fat.

The tail is epoxy's onto the bottom of my laptop.

Thus, holding the cord.

Repost from previous thread:

Personally I find that using a VGA --> S video adapter better than using the S video --> composite adapter. The RCA connection is nice and solid and not easily yanked out and the VGA connection has screws to keep the connection in place. After time I found the S video connection on my laptop was getting loose and I had two instances where it got bumped out of the machine's plug.

Additional bonus: Plug it in and it has enough resistance to have Vista boot utilizing the second display already.

Oh and it does S video out of the VGA out in case you need that :)

Give us a report on whether it works or not. I have bought similar items and they only output black and white (no 10pf capacitor according to Ollie).

it's like the ones I've been using for years... full color output! But I'm going to buy a couple... I have other computer karaoke folks that could always use a spare part or two!

You may even tighten jackscrews on the VGA connector to the computer VGA socket.
The adapter S-Video connector can be taped to the S-Video cable to the monitor if it's used.

I like the VGA adapter because of the screws; I can take if off and on without issue and always have a secure connection. Taping the S video adapter is so, well, messy and impermanent.

I also like the VGA connection since it is at the back of my PC and not on the side. It's all personal preference and layout. Your mileage may vary :)

You can always use heatshrink if you're careful.

Just ordered 10 of them for $9.02 -- including shipping! I am going to give them away to KJs as a party favor. 8-)
