Just an observation open for discussion. I've noticed that the best singers at my karaoke joint give the KJ very little hassle. The problems always come from the very next tier: reasonably good singers, but not the A-1 types. Could it be that they know they're just inches away from being in "the bigs" and this causes all the insecurity?

It's just inexperience. They are not really comfortable, and they worry about their performance. Little things throw them off, and they are nervous.
Once you gain some experience, whether you are really good or not, then you get comfortable with what and who you are. You know the little things don't make that much difference, and you can roll with the punches.
I was once insecure and inexperienced, and am no longer. Now I don't care that much whether I sound extra good or not. I am what I am, and that is OK. If I am on, fine, but if I am not no big deal. Have my version? Great. Don't have my version? No problem, I will deal with it or pick another song. Bad sound? No complaints, but I won't come back.

the ones that I don't like are the ones that think they are great you know the type this needs to be turned up , that needs to be turned down , set your eq here etc etc and for the most part they are NOT GOOD SINGERS

Maybe this guy is deaf, but an acquaintance of mine has been a live performer for years in many different band incarnations. Every single time he comes up to the stage he asks me, "Can you make this mic a little hotter so I don't have to yell?" Good lord, his voice is so loud and booming...Fact is, I turn him DOWN every single time. But apparently he just LOVES his voice and believes everyone else does/should too.
On the average most people don't know a thing about EQ, fx, etc., so I'm always surprised when someone does ask. That is rare but I'm always happy to oblige if they ask specifically.
Ironically, most people don't know that we always have vocal effects of some kind running - but all they have to do is go to a show that doesn't have them and they figure it out. They all think that for some reason they just SOUND BETTER on our system.

Another reason I have a monitor speaker.

Believe me, this has nothing to do with a monitor speaker, . He is just an egotistical dude who wants EVERYONE to hear him. Our room provides almost a "surround sound" feel so you can hear yourself well wherever you stand (and SM350s that NEVER feed back). I was talking tongue-in-cheek, really, about the deafness. I could crank the level up to ear splitting and he'd still ask for more. I think it is more of a habit now than anything.

Yes, but with those I turn up the monitor to shut them up. The rest of the room doesn't have to listen to him....

I hate the ones that come up and ask for "more echo". I have a very good level of effects on my mics and there is no need to have the singer sound like he's in and empty stadium, for pete's sake. What is with those people anyways?

My favorites, too...
One lady at one of my venues comes in with her harmonicas (different keys) and her tambourine. First question she asks me is, which key the song is in. Then she tells me exactly, what kind of effect and how much she wants. Then she needs almost a minute to adjust the mic stand and position and get her instruments ready.
Needless to say, as soon as the song starts, I'm out for a cigarette break... she's that bad.
From the other hand, at another venue I have a guy that comes in with his harmonica and one time even with an acoustic guitar. He does an awesome job with his songs, singing and playing the instruments. It's a real pleasure to listen to that guy.

We had a harmonica guy come in with a single harp, one key only, and play with every song, no matter what the key was. Didn't seem to bother him at all. Sure bothered us!

I LOVE the fake dial nudge! It's always handy to have an extra unused channel just for such purposes.
What's the best is when you look at them with a questioning look, asking, "how's that?". and they tell you "yeah, much better" . Happens ALL the time.

I a couple that had been my regs for 3 years. Even followed me from the other bar I played. They start a while back making a racially offensive statement, either during the break of the song or at the end. I couldn't get them to quit, so I did.
The bar owners are angry at me, go figure.

Thats why I refer to them differently. There are good singers, then there are "superstars" and "divas".
