I have simpler solution for you. Just start the song playing and pause it. If they can't guess with a short amount of music, un-pause and play a little more, keep doing that until they get the answer. You can do this at any point in the song. It's easier if you're using a computer instead of disks.

Yeah just playing a part of the song would be easier, but if you want it to play specific points in the song, any wave editing program should do the trick. Figure out the point you want the song passage to start, mark it & cut off everything before it then do the same to the end & resave the snippet as a new file so you don't damage the original.

I downloaded a bunch of movie sound bites and used them for trivia. They will also go on the compuhost nicely. I picked up some funny ones to play after songs, between songs, whenever to get a laugh but they worked nicely for trivia. People loved it.

Hope nobody minds, but ripman, where did you download the movie snippets from?
I also have Compuhost, and was thinking of doing something similar to what you just mentioned. Sorry for getting off OP topic.

Well, I found them at different sites (I have cartoon characters and video as well) and the first link when I googled "movie sound bites" gives hundreds. It's a good start.

I run 2 weekly pub quizzes, one round being "Guess the song".
10 short clips where they need guess the artist and title. The quiz is also shown on a big screen for the more textual questions.
I simply use an audio editor to clip the bit of sound I want. Then put them into a powerpoint presentation (as this suits the overall quiz format), and then run it from my remote control.

Other suggestions, as per RipMan's quotes:
Play a cover and ask for the original artist.
Play 2 songs and ask what links them (writer, for example)
My favourite:
Play a song that has had a cover version more popular than the original. Ask who covered it. Very easy as these are usually well known covers, but I like exposing people to the original. Good one for this is that Tiffany did not do the original "I think we're alone now"...

Sorry to go off topic... proceed.

Well not necessarily. I remember when that song came out in the 80's, the kids all thought it was her 'new' song & couldn't believe it had ever been released before. I hear that alot with remakes - especially from the younger crowds. 311-LoveSong - what that was done in the 80's by the Cure?
