Bravo Kar !!! Beautiful.

This is the kind of thing I love to see.
And I'll admit that I'm not the accomplished audio hack but I am finding stuff like this pablum. Some karaokers can sing and are good at what they do with the tech stuff. And by professional standards are quite impressive. I'm just trying to figure things out like why a monitor works or doesn't work. I learn something new every day. And for you guys with experience giving good advice I commend you for stickin' to your karaoke guns. I'm just coming from a slightly different angle of approach that's all.

Thanks karyoker. I appreciate the advice. I'd like to have a simple fix to please all, obviously not going to happen. I would like to learn through others experience and mistakes to make my rookie mistakes fewer and further between.

Another rookie question (sorry mcky). How do you separate the vocals from the music?

I have no problem with real questions. But like a lawyer, I will object at timese -- "Already asked and answered!"

You just don't send any music to the monitor (aux 1) send. It is that simple.

But in general, that will confuse people and you will want some music in the monitor channel. I usually send just a bit, and people often ask to have it turned up depending on where the mains are.

The little hot spots are OK, I guess, but are not my favorite. Which is why I go to the extra weight and bulk of a little 10" or 12" wedge. They are definitely better than nothing, which is the usual fare at karaoke shows. (I would say less than 10% of the shows I have senn used monitors.)

Yes this is an old standard for experienced singers. Most newbies when they hear their vocal louder than the music will pull the mic away. For most karaoke singers the mains are better.

One example.. One of my siggies is Pocket Full Of Gold. During the chorus I am actually singing an octave above what I use during the rest of the song. I need to hear the chorus singers to sing in exact pitch with them. At this time I am walking toward the mains. With other songs I need to hear them to harmonize. In a pro situation the chourus singers need to harmonize with the lead singer.

One of the hardest clubs I ever sang in was a stage that was tucked between walls on the sides and the bass bins in front and the mains in front behind the walls. Without a monitor it was virtually impossible to sing. In fact I refused until they put a monitor on stage.

Large clubs require a monitor or two but in small venues they are not that critical. It really depends upon the stage setup and acoustics of the room. Even with a non stage setting place a monitor where the singer has a choice to hear it or the mains and angle the video monitor where the natural spot is near the "sweet spot:

Photo shows a JBL Eon10G2 on opposite side of dance floor towards stage. In this case it was a 100% improvement over being next to stage.

It is another one of those small things which separate the pros from the wannabes.

So getting back to the subject, did you ever figure out what you are going to do about monitors?

I'm only set up to do small venues right now, it sounds like the overall opinion is that I can get by without. In the meantime, I will keep my eye open for specials on a floor wedge new or used.

I have jbl eon 15g2's, can I daisy chain one of these from my main speakers, or are my speakers too powerful?

Thanks, Rosario

I've been using a hot spot for about 2 years now and it's been great. Ya, it has a narrow field of coverage but in most places you don't have alot of room. Also, it's not a trip hazard like a floor wedge. I set mine up on a mic stand just above waist level. All my singers love it. It can also swivel on the stand so they can position it however they like. I do like a floor wedge for larger venues but a hot spot is a great buy for the everyday stuff.

Um, I don't know, what are your main speakers?

Daisy chain what? From where?

Are the hotspots passive speakers? If so, can I daisy chain them from the back of my jbl eon15 g2 powered speakers (main speakers)? I was looking at them (the hotspots), and thought that they were passive speakers.

With more sophisicated systems with EFX I find most karaoke singers want to hear the sound coming from the mains. I daisy chain a Jbl Eon10 G2 on the opposite side towards the stage. When they hear their voice with no EFX they feel they are being cheated. This works in some venues but in venues with reverbs coming back to the stage it is not as critical.

I assume you have the none powered variety which means no you can't tap into the back of your Eon directly. I guess you could go out from your Eon to an amplifier and then to your HotSpot. There is a powered variety of HotSpot also but I think you would know if you had one. Mine are none powered.

I have the POWERED Eon G2 15" JBL's, would they be too powerful to daisy chain to the hotspot, or should I just face my JBL's back toward the singers from across the room, as suggested by Karaoker?

Thanks

To the best of my knowledge there is no provision to tap power off from a Eon G2, it can only send a Line signal to another powered speaker.

Thanks, Londonlive, that answers my question. I thought that the amp in my powered speaker would power the hotspot, but I guess not. I just looked in my speaker manual, and you are correct, they do NOT send power. Thanks, again, and next time I'll do a little more reading before I post DUMB questions.

I do believe they make a powered HotSpot.

But it is normal to run a monitor from a separate feed, the AUX1. This allows you to change the volume of the monitor without affecting the mains, and also to change the music/vocal mix in the monitor. If you can't do those things, it is probably just as good to point one of your EONs toward the singer.

The G2 has a typical loop through to another powered speaker. For routing to an external amp set the switch to the mixer position.

I chain my hot spot directly off my passive speakers. It works fine.
