I just heard (through a friend), that someone who hosts a Karaoke show has decided to have a private karaoke party at her boyfriend's home. She called up my friend and left her a voice-mail stating that they will be serving wine and cheese and some food, and she's asking her to pay her $15 to attend.

The only thing I can think of is that your friend doesn't own her own equipment and has to pay to rent the equipment. Otherwise I agree it is tacky. I own my own equipment and if I had a karaoke party at my home, I wouldn't charge to attend. I might ask them to bring a dish to make it a potluck dinner but I wouldn't charge admission.

We do an all nighter out at the farm The porta potty is about $300 We always have a keg of Bud and Bud light. Plus a lot of food. People can set up tents or park rv's.

While we dont charges there are those that contribute to the over all cost. Of course I supply the system for nothing, it is party time. We dont let people drink and drive .

What would this be worth, If I decided to charge a cover?

having a party and having everyone contribute is a LOT different than charging admission. I would LOVE to do it, if i had the place.

If I were invited to a party, and they said to bring something (as in a pot luck party), I don't have a problem with that. But, if you are going to entertain in your home (or a friend's home), it is a private party. This isn't a club or bar or restaurant... it's a home.




Danny, I disagree here. If a bunch of us were to get together and suggest that someone host a karaoke party at their house, and that person doesn't own the equipment, then I would agree with you. But if you (the person who will be acting host/hostess) invites people to come over on a casual whim (out of the blue), then whatever you decide to do for entertainment at your place should fall on you and nobody else. Let me ask you this.... If you were having a party for a 5 year old kid, and you hired a clown to come over and entertain the other kids (guests), would you tell the Parents that they have to pay you $xxx because you hired a clown?

Oh, btw... this person (hosting the party) is not a friend of mine. She's just a KJ that I know. It's my friend that told me about this.

15 bucks.....holy microphone spit!!!.......I can go to a bar, order a $1 glass of diet cola, and sing all night...... ....sometimes free refills too.......

Well, a bar manager will axe a karaoke show that only attracts singers who buy one coke.

I'll admit I have attended quite a few shows and only bought one drink - but just to check things out and leave within an hour. It'd be "tacky" to stay there all evening.

I have hosted numerous Karaoke parties at my house in my basement. Usually 25 or so people come. My gear, my music, my place(bar, pool table, etc). Its usually a dinner/party type deal. Sometimes sub sandwiches and salad, or one time did a formal dinner with cornish game hens, another time lasagna. But always food and some basic beer and sodas. Any other specialty drinks its BYOB.

Never a charge. Just me inviting friends for a party.

I dont think its tacky. If your girl doesn't want to go, she doesn't have to. Maybe theyre not trying to pay for the equipment, but rather the wine and cheese.

The Karaoke Host in question may just be trying to get her feet wet in the promotion end, and is going about it the wrong way.

If this were done at say, a private hall or country club ( I tried it at a country club myself- through in a free buffet, yada yada), it would be an ok attempt at at an event promotion. In a home? Not so much.

My friend didn't go. She didn't even return the phone call (from the original message left on her voice-mail). She's too shy to say anything to this person.

When was the last time you invited people over to your house for a social gathering? Did you charge them for the booze they drank (or tell them that they would have to pay you for it)? Please explain why you feel this isn't tacky?

for a barn gathering, a private party, the host ASKED for a few bucks to help cover the costs of the rental portapottie, food, beer, etc...

He freely donated his space and equipment, and people jammed for over eight hours.

I didn't think it was too tacky at all. Gave m'man $40 for the two of us! Lord knows I'd have spent that and more at a bar partying it up!

Personally I don't think it's tacky at all -- She was upfront with the Co-Pay
Tacky to me would have been to invite people over and THEN ask for $15

Wow, just really wow.

Even before I was a KJ properly, my fiancee and I were known for our parties. Usually twice a year we would hire a nice big venue with a bar, invite friends and family, I'd DJ host and KJ. We'd fill a room with about 80 of our nearest and dearest and just party.

We'd spend a small fortune on catering, decor, venue hire and so on. It would be a real event, personalised invitations and everything. In hindsight I now see them as good practise for my wedding planning

This year, as I was way too busy, and we are now saving towards the wedding, we didn't throw one. A lot of friends commented - not that they missed it, as that would come across as "Why aren't you giving us a party this year" but more like "It just feels less Christmassy without one of your parties".

Would I charge? For real? That would be so classless!

Why did we do it? It's just who we are - we love partying and love throwing parties.

Whenever we have a party in our own home, only friends and friends of friends are invited. Charging admission is unthinkable. A request to bring food & drink to contribute almost goes without saying. But okay to request, bring a dish & favorite beverage.
This sounds more like opening up your home to strangers, and whoever wants to pay $15. If that's the kind of home parties you like, more power to you.
