Another topic made me think of this.

1) Do you allow the same song to be sung multiple times in the same show?
2) If so, how many times? A cap?
3) Either way, why or why not?

Typically don't have too many repeats. I don't let repeats occur in the same rotation and I try and keep them separate by at least 90 minutes or so. If two singers request the same song in the rotation I tell singer #2 that it's already in and do they have a replacement. If they want to sing it anyway I tell them I'll talk to singer #1 and see what shakes out.

Most times one or the other gives way and it's all good and if they both hang onto it singer#1 gets to sing it.

If I know it's a case of one singer wanting to show up the first singer of the song, I won't allow it. The last thing I need is song wars!
If it's a case where someone walks in and it was just done, I tell them that someone just did it, but I wouldn't mind queuing it up later in the evening. But like Gryf, I rarely get the same song requested in a night.
Funny thing, last night a boyfriend and girlfriend came in. The girl requested a song and then the boy requested the very same song. I let his girlfiriend know that the song was the one she had already put in and to please let him know (she brought up his second round of slips for him with hers) He didn't realize it was his girlfriend who trumped him. Hilarious when he found out!

We don't want people showing up others, or saying "I'll do it right!" and hurting feelings. Also, I couldn't imagine subjecting the audience to 5 renditions of Black Velvet or Picture.

Not in the same rotation and I try to discourage it if the singer who already sang it is still there ......and never ever if singer 2 tells me that they can just want to show up singer 1

They sing "He Stopped Loving Her Today" three to four times a night where we go as patrons. We usually only have it twice on our night--one for whoever gets it in first and one for the bar owner.

If someone sings something early in the night, I might allow it later in the evening & only if the original singer has left. Most nights, once a song is done, it's done for the night. Too much of the "I can do it better" attitude to cause crap.

Yeah I mean, it depends upon the attitude and time frame. Generally I find if I have duplicate requests, most people want to change.

This new years eve, me and a friend sang "Don't Go Breaking My Heart", as we always do - it's a good track to get people up and singing.

Then some guy comes up to me with attitude "That's my song, I always sing it - don't steal MY songs".

1) I am the host here - don't talk to me like that or you won't be singing jack.
2) You haven't put any request in.
3) I host here all the time and you have sung it once before, over a year ago.

So anyhow, he comes back with a slip later, slams it down and walks off. Oh dear - he's forgotten to put his name on it. But I'm not a jerk - it goes into the rotation. Then when it comes up "Someone want's to sing Don't Go Breaking My Heart, but they can't remember their name. Anyone remember asking for that song?"

He just glares at me.

"No?"

Glare

"Ok, next up then is ..."

OK, I acted like a dick, but meh!

I'm not going to subject my audience to the same song twice in four or five hours!

and yes, I hate the "anything YOU can do, I can do Better" (with appropriate nods to "Annie") scenario!

Definitely not in the same rotation. If a diferent singer wants to do the same song later then I'll usually allow it.

As a retired band member, I used to get paid to sing. I could care less if someone sings better than me. I encourage and applaud it.

just about the only thing where adults imbibe, and act worse than their kids! !

I have made a few rare exceptions on long shows, I prevent any song being sung twice in any 3 hour period, and usually tell the second singer it has been done even then.

Was in a bar in a different town once, they had karaoke long before I had any interest in either hosting or singing.

Some woman got up and sang a song, can't recall what. By a black singer, Lutricia McNeil or some such.

Anyhow - it was dire, really bad. Middle aged woman really just couldn't sing.

Few songs pass...

Another woman sings the exact same song. I said to my mate "I don't know much about this karaoke crap - but that is surely poor form?".

We then see the original woman run crying from the room.

Just wow man!

I've done it a couple of times but only when it was separated by a few hours. My general rule is "Find something different to sing". Bartenders and non singers will appreciate it too.
