I've seen many discussions on this forum, where the windscreen has "popped" up.
I've seen them called every imaginable thing you can think of, and most of the time, it was Negative. Everyone talks about the filth, saliva, boogers, s***, and everything else that they collect, as a reason why they'd NEVER use them, or ever sing into one. I feel that their very words are, in fact, the BEST DEFENSE for using them. I would much rather have a buffer between all of that FUNK and my mic, than have it going INTO my mic. Not only for sanitary reasons, but to protect the inner workings of my mic. The stuff that is going into the windscreen doesn't just MAGICALLY disappear if you don't use the windscreen, so where do you think ALL of this funk is going? It's going INTO your mic. I would much rather have something that at the end of the night I can take it off, put it in a ziplock bag, take it home and soak it in soapy water, clean it, dry it, and have it ready for the next time I'm going to use it. You can't do that with your mic. The inner workings won't handle being submerged in soapy water.

IF you are using one of your own that you can pop on the mic that no one else uses, then yes they are a great germ defense - although it won't affect the barrel of the mic that you actually hold after someone wipes their nose with their hand & holds the mic with it, but that's another story.
Now if it is a karaoke night & the kj is using the same screen for every singer, then it is actually worse than no foam screen because at least the metal screen you can wipe off on your pants or shirt at the very least. The foam screen just keeps on collecting & getting wetter & wetter throughout the night. And even if the host changes it out every few singers, it only takes a couple singers to actually drench one of those things! These aren't meant to be germ fighters, they are wind screens for outside. Helps cut back wind noise through the mic.
And yes you can unscrew the metal screen of the mic off (well every mic i've ever worked with) & do exactly the same thing every night. As a matter of fact most also have a little foam lining inside the metal screen that can be washed as well.

I hate the foam windscreens. They impact sound, are gross, and are ugly to boot. For whatever reason, I have never chosen a venue using them as a regular show to attend.

I keep one on the #2 wireless mic as an easy way to tell them apart. Aside from that I don't use them.

Better to just place some colored electrical tape on them to tell them apart - I have red on one, blue on the other, and at the board red and blue...makes it very simple.

Some people prefer a mic with the windscreen, so I provide one. Entirely up to them and the option is there.

All four of my wireless mics have unique color identifiers on the butt of the mic. Since my mixer supports four mics, and they all have individual output, I have used some model paint to paint the Sliding knobs of my mixer to match the colors on the butts of the mics. This makes it easy to tell which mic the singer is using, and to adjust the proper mic, just match the colors.
If a bar has windsocks on the mics, I don't sing there.
