Was talking with a friend the other day about the women I've met and dated through karaoke. The last three haven't worked out, for one thing or another, but then I realized that my female friend never met anyone, ever, because she sits at home and watches TV. The thing is, you have to put yourself out there, and there's no better way than to stand behind a mic and sing a song. Shows that you're brave, shows that (hopefully) you have some talent, and it's an unbeatable conversation-starter with perfect strangers (Oh my God! That is absolutely my favorite song). And although my three flings didn't work out, all three of them have remained friends, and I wouldn't have given up my times with them for the world.
The funny thing is, my homebody friend is a great singer, and would get all kinds of attention if she would just get herself to a karaoke bar.

Couldn't agree more that nothing will happen for you sitting at home. I used to accompany a singing friend to karaoke. Finally I tried it and it was really so horrible that people were laughing. ("We enjoyed WATCHING you, maybe you should stick to instrumentals.") I used to just get up there about once every 6 months for comic relief. In the meantime, all of us females would be out on the dance floor. I used to tell my friend, "Who cares if we make a fool of ourselves? You aren't going to meet anyone good in a bar." Then one night in walked a new guy. You guessed it.

Hmmm. Not a altogether a bad idea.
I'm not quite sure how to make it work for me.
When I do my own show I don't meet anyone becasue the show runs continuously. Makes having a meaningful conversation with someone next to impossible. Maybe I'm going to have to learn to take breaks.
I frequent a show on Friday nights when I'm not working. It's a great place and it's always crowded. One of the things I like about the place is that they like my singing. I've probably heard more great comments on my singing there than any place I've ever been. But . . . ladies in my age group (61) don't often go out alone. In fact they don't go out in "packs" much like they did when I was younger. So the ones who are often the most complimentary about my singing are almost always with someone. Even if it's not a husband that tends to put a damper on things from the get-go.
The one exception was two nights ago. There were three unattached lovlies who seemed to really like my singing (and me). One made a comment to me that I interpreted as an expression of interest! So what was the problem? For the first time in months I was with a date that night!
That will probably never happen again . . . either the date or the offer. Why does it seem that when one's "cup runneth over" it's never at the right time?

I saw the thread title and I just didn't think the discussion would interest me, but I opened it anyways. To my surprise, some good points and good thoughts here.
I too would rather be out at Karaoke in a bar or restaurant than sitting home watching garbage on TV. What a waste of time.
I'm married and not looking to hook up or date, but I enjoy the social aspect of Karaoke and just going out.
Just going to a bar and drinking isn't my idea of fun, but I do enjoy having a few beers abd for me Karaoke is a good reason to have a few drinks. Otherwise I'd be less likely to go out. To me it's good entertainment and if I was single I think it would be a great way to meet women.
I really like the idea of the Karaoke singles night. I think if it's properly marketed and promoted it could be popular. It's a very good idea IMO.

Just out of curiousity, wondering how many people here met their significant others through karaoke?

Not me, I met my wife 30 years ago and I didn't know what Karaoke was back then in 1978, don't even know if it existed. I guess I'm an old fart . . .

I've been a professional musician/singer for 42 years and I've been going to karaoke as well as doing my own shows for about 3 years. During that time I've dated 3 women I met while on a gig.
I married and divorced one and almost married another. When do you think the law of averages is going to begin to turn in my favor?
At least in my case all the talk about musicians and their groupies seems highly exaggerated.

To answer LL's question - We did - about 14 years ago. I went to his show. Not too long after that we were purchasing our first karaoke system and will be celebrating with an official marriage this Sunday - after 12 years. I was looking at our guest list - it is 90% karaoke friends we've made over the years, and the other 10% musicians we are connected to. Karaoke is a very strong bonding experience.

I had a friend who got his fourth divorce. I watched as someone asked him, a couple of months after that divorce, "Are you going to marry again?"
He answered, "No, I think at this point I would be ahead of the game if I just found a woman I didn't like and bought her a house."

My wife and I met one night at the end of my show. I had been playing with my band on stage and had just finished for the night. I had stepped off of the stage to talk to somone who wanted to speak to me from the audience. She walked by me at least 3 times, she says, trying to get my attention. Finallly, as I started to walk away from the person I was talking to, Brinda stepped up and introduced herself. I thought she was incredible, Blonde, gorgeous, a real Barbie type woman with a beautiful smile and green eyes that captured me. I talked to her for a few minutes and left, thinking I would never see her again. She suddenly started showing up at every show I did. Our relationship started with getting coffee and talking walks late at night. About 3 years later, I asked her to marry me and she said yes. It has not always been easy, but nothing good is. Did I meet her at Karaoke? No, it was not karaoke, but it was a show I was doing with my band. I do have to say that it has always been really easy to meet beautiful women when performing. I dont think I am such a great catch for the women, but there is something they like...probably the singing! --Mike

I get a lot of puzzled reactions from people when I tell them I set a novel in a karaoke bar, and I think your last sentence, Karen, sums up my answer: Karaoke is a very strong bonding experience. In the book, I describe it as "church with cocktails." Singing to someone is a very powerful and intimate thing to share.
