Hi Guys, there's a Valentine Show coming up and the host wants to do some karaoke during the dinner, giving the DJ a break, the problem is how can I use the DJ's equipment to do karaoke. He doesn't have any effects (reverb, delay, echo, etc.). He just have a DJ mixer, power amp and speakers. He has inputs for his wireless SM58 that's all. So what is it I need (in terms of effects/equipment) to tap into his system to do some karaoke, and how do I connect it.

Several ways you can do it. One way is to get a small inexpensive mixer with good effects built in. It's easy to swap out a mixer in a few minutes OR you can plug the mic into a small mixer that has on board effects and then go into a channel input on the main mixer. This is very simple to do and probably the fastest and easiest way.

You can also get a vocal effects unit like a Lexicon or an Alesis. Plug it into his mixer and you now have vocal effects.

With my Alesis multimix 8 USB mixer it has an internal soundcard. You plug the USB cable into your computer and the software on your computer plays the music through the mixer and then through the rest of your system. If you have a CD based Karaoke system you just plug the player into a channel on the main mixer. Very simple.

Also, many CD based Karaoke players have echo with a knob controlling the amount of echo. If you plug a microphone into the player and then plug the player into a channel on his mixer you will have some vocal effects. This is what you will have in many bars and restaurants that have Karaoke. It's not the best, but much better than singing dry with no vocal effects at all.
