Headed to Portland this Friday for business and will be there through Sunday. Any good places to go? Company is putting us up at the Benson Hotel, I guess it's downtown.
Any good suggestions? Anyone here run a show there on Saturday night that I can visit?
Cheers!

too bad you are not coming in until Friday. I have a Thursday night show that is only about 8 minutes from downtown.
For weekends. The Grand Cafe on Grand Avenue @ the Morrison Street Bridge is a good one.
The Galaxy on about 7th and East Burnside is just accross the Burnside Bridge from downtown.
The Ambassador is on 46th & Sandy Boulevard which is about 8 minutes from downtown (7 nights a week) and is a major karaoke hot spot.
I will PM you with my phone number.
Swingcat and I live in Portland and are both KJ's and would be happy to be your karaoke guides.

Well I am looking at where to go for the evening. The Galaxy is close by and easy to get to but I'm open for anything. If anyone wants to meet at a specific place in the area please gimmie an address and name and I'll make sure to swing on out there.
Judging from the fashions I've seen thus far I'll probably be easy to spot: I'll be the guy with cowboy hat and boots on

Just talked with Flipper and looks like this is the plan:
The Ambassador
4744 NE Sandy Blvd
Portland, OR 97213
I'm told Karaoke starts around 9:00 but I'll probably show up a bit earlier and grab a bite to eat.
Dunno when I'll leave But I suspect it'll be late. Swing by and say hi

Well we all had a good time!
Gryf is a really great guy and quite the singer to boot. Kurt "Swingcat" was there and took plenty of pictures. We will try to get them posted ASAP. Swingcat was doing interviews for a couple of karaoke publications that evening with the General Manager of the bar and even included Gryf in one of the interviews.
The Ambassador was very busy as usual and there were plenty of good singers. This place has been a Portland hot spot for over 20 years featuring Karaoke 7 nights a week and two separate Karaoke Lounges to choose from. The food and drinks are on the expensive side but the atmosphere is excellent. Upscale Granite Counters and tables, marble pillars, stainless steel accents, and rich textures abound. Top it off with water features and two enormous fish tanks behind the bar and you have a first class joint. No matter where you look you will find LCD TV's that display the Karaoke Lyrics throughout the bar.
They have gone totally "Karaoke Slip Free" and have 4 Kiosk terminals in the main room that feed the KJ with requests. They have a totally new sound system that sounds pretty darn good. They invested a great deal in lighting and fog machines as well as effect lighting which really puts the polish on a first class Karaoke venue. The crowd is very enthusiastic and understand really get behind the singers.
Gryf it was a pleasure meeting you and we are looking forward to your next visit to the Portland Area.

That get together at the Ambassador sounded like a lot of fun! Wish I could've gone too. I remember going there once in the mid-90's back when I first went to any karaoke clubs. It sounds like it has turned into quite the deluxe, upscale karaoke bar. Pretty cool!

It would be fun if you and Charm & her Krew could come along too. But trying to get her out of Dennys is like pulling impacted wisdom teeth!!!!! So maybe a run down to Canby would be the only REALISTIC option (now whether u can find place to SIT in there is another thing alltogether---its so small!!)

Well I am safely back in Dallas.
Thanks to Flipper and Swingcat for hanging with me at the Ambassador. I highly recommend that anyone traveling to that area contact them and spend some time with some great folk. For the record Flipper sings more country than I do, and I'm the Texan
The Ambassador was a great place and I'm very intrigued by the setup they have. Might be an interesting thing to pitch to some of the software vendors to see if development of that type of module for Compuhost or Hoster as an add-in. I could certainly see the value in that.
Next time I am headed up there I'll give better notice and maybe we can arrange a genuine meetup somewhere or even at someone's house and make it a party <shrug>. It was fabulous meeting ya'll and I am certain I'll be back sometime in the future!

It's been out for almost 5 years and works with Compuhost or Hoster....
