Everyone using sub woofers? What brand, model. Match up wattage to the mains?

For subs I typically will double the power of the mains - if they are pushing 500 watts, I want my sub to push 1000.
I will use a sub in any chance I can. Not only does it round out the sound nicely, it also takes some of the added low frequency strain off of your main cabs - provided everything is crossed over together.

What do you mean by crossed over?

A crossover divides the frequencies so all sub frequencies to the sub & everything above those frequencies to the main cabs. THis does require running two amps in most cases or powered speakers/subs.

I use two Yorkville LS800P's, they are self powered 18" subs, pushing 1500 watts each. Considered by many the best powered sub in their class. I use two Yorkville U15P's for the top end, that are rated at 900 watts each.


A basic explanation and use of a crossover might be, speakers need to be sent the frequency range they were designed to handle. Depending on the sub, they will generally be assigned to handle anywhere between 150hz and 80hz and below. There are fixed band passive crossover's (usually built right into the cabinet) and electronic (active) crossovers that can be adjusted to any frequency you desire. For example a three way cabinet, in theory, might have a passive crossover in it that will send 120hz and down to the 15, 121hz thru 1,500 to the mid speaker and 1,501hz on up to the compression driver. In reality (depending on the slope) the crossover region overlaps. A lot of subs will have a low pass filter built into them, mine has one that is adjustable between 90 and 150hz. It does, as it's name implies, allows 150hz and bellow thru while at the same time attenuating any frequency above it. Yamaha has a book out that you might find very useful. It has been around forever and will explain pretty much anything that you would ever need to know about live sound production.

No it's not, but oddly enough I haven't heard from that gal since she posted that she would be sending a set out for evaluation. Tells me alot about that company.

Never heard of Technical Pro. Looks like a too good to be true scenerio. Don't throw your money away on a hope it works. If you have to save up, but get a something with a good rep & customer service that you can rely on if needed.

Technical Pro makes a whole host of DJ Products (mostly sold on e-bay) that professional Disc Jockeys dismiss as lower than Vocopro junk, and are the butt of many jokes especially their "Blue Ice" Power Amps that put out a whopping 350 watts per channel into 8 ohms and will "light up any room with exciting blue lights". I'd say stay away... Far away!

Not really - power typically costs money, you are probably going to be looking at $800 for a new in that power range & price. You could try

Been watching one of those b52s on ebay for about a week, $550 used plus $203 sh. A little pricey for used.

I definitely want 800 watts or more.

Yeah for that price i'd opt to save a little more and buy new from one of the main stores that will usually offer free shipping on certain orders - and a warranty to boot that you don't get with used items (normally).

Exactly! Sad thing, I've never seen a sub at a show. Not sure how much bass it would have or how much it would improve the sound.

I won't do a show without at least one sub. Not only will it round out the entire sound but crossed over properly, will help take some of the load off of the mains.

How about this one?

That one is fine, but it's not powered. You will need an amp & a crossover unit of some sort. Some amps have this built in. CV is typically better suited for DJ work rather than live, but should work fine.
