A better mic will decrease your susceptibility to feedback. If you look at how mics are described, one of the things which is sited is "gain before feedback". This is important at karaoke, because if you want your quiet singers to be heard you do have to crank the gain.
A lot of singers keep coming back to my shows, because I try real hard to make them be able to 1) hear themself and 2) have other people hear them. Good mics help me with that.
