if we as KJ really want to keep our singers up to date with new stuff I guess we will have to go elsewhere

I never relied solely on Sound Choice for new (current) releases anyway. The monthlies did a much better job at getting them out faster if I needed them. I do most of buying now from overseas.

The only beef I had with Sound Choice is about the Foundation. It was supposed to only be sold as a set; guaranteed. Later I found out that they had split off songs from The Foundation and sold them as separate disks and under different numbers. I called them on it and they refused to talk to me.

Do you have that in writing somewhere?

I thought the idea of the Foundation was to give you a bit of a discount for buying in bulk, so to speak. Never would I expect a guarantee that they would keep those songs exclusive to it. As the songs they include are supposed to be among the most likely to be sung, why would they hold them back from other buyers?

When they first came out with the Foudation series the songs were exclusive to it but they changed that policy when they came out with the Foundation 2 is my understanding of it as the second set had songs that were sung most often from the spotlight series.

Yeah it may have been when they originally released it in 94. However policy changes & people wanted those discs individually as well so they released the Foundation singles a couple years back. It was highly requested in their forums.

When I first started getting serious about this hosting thing three years ago, I took a good hard look at those Foundation sets, but didn't go that route because they are just so last century. I can't imagine anyone starting out today being able to use them as their foundations. After just looking the track listings over this morning, there are things that get sung quite often in my room, but the majority of them have seldom or ever been done.

SC should really re-do these sets for today's newbie. But I have issues with the way they package most of their material. And I know a lot of you guys are good with this brand... just my perspective.

The problem has been that the Foundation sets have been forced to change over time is that some of the licencing has changed on a few of the songs. As SC's initial contracts expired for some they were unable to renew some of them for various reasons (mainly specific artist who either wanted too much or were unwilling to allow rights). Therefore to continue selling their Foundation series SC had to change some fo their disks by replacing a few songs.

This created the problems that a few of the replacments could not be bought elsewhere in the SC line. To provide these new songs to the market who had already bought old versions of the foundations they created the Foundation singles series. This was done before the custom disk became popular so that was not a option at the time.

I do not see much overlap between either the foundations, bricks, and the spotlight series, but there is some. As many of the Spotlight series disks have been discontinued due to the same reasons, as for the changes in the foundations a few of the other tracks on those disks have migrated into the Foundation (and bricks) as replacements for tracks no longer avalible. I think the Foundation 2 series included many songs from no longer produced spotlight disks, but of course some of those no longer made spotlight disks might be obtainable at various sources so discontinued disks may not be obvious.

I see no other karaoke maker besides Soundchoice that has gone through so much of an effort to follow the letter of the law in terms of song liscencing (while continuing to provide a product to the public).

For the majority of companies, these are still a perfect core set. My Pioneer laserdiscs are from 96 on back & these are still used heavily today.
You'd really be surprised how many people really want to sing those 'last century' songs...

Just an update, I got my Australian Sound Choice disc in today and all the songs play without any problems. The packaging was a soft sleeve encased in a cardboard sleeve which I wasn't to happy about, I have had discs come in a hard case with the case being cracked which probably saved the disc from damage.

Every venue is different, I shy away from venues that do a lot of country because even if sung well it just isn't my kind of music. If a venue is rock oriented then around here I would have to say a vast majority of the music sung will be from the 80's and 90's with a few modern rock songs every now and then. Is that what SC Foundation mostly consist of, 80's and 90's? Rudy.

Initially, the foundation 1 WAS unique songs that weren't sold on anything else. If you wanted those individual songs, yeah, you had to go the foundation way.

That all got relaxed by the time they decided to have the foundation 2 and made some bricks... I never got the 2nd foundation, as I already had almost all the songs on other discs as they came out.

I did buy Brick4, just because it had a Queensryche song on it that nobody else offered at the time.

See you can't go by that statement anymore - it's old & outdated. Business plans change, management change, policies change, public demand changes.
The Foundation originally had some exclusive songs, then some of the discs were direct duplicates of the Spotlights as well.
