Lonman,

It's too late here now to power anything up and try out the following. And I don't have to tell you how many questions I still have after reading the manual.

So.. if I understand your suggestion, then what follows will make sense to you and I'll know if I've "got it"

On each channel the Yamaha has an "AUX" knob. There is also a 1/4in "AUX" output jack. The "AUX" knob, I believe, controls the level of output for their respective channels to that one "AUX" 1/4 inch jack. Correct?

Immediately below each "AUX" knob there is an auxilliary on/off pre-switch ("PRE"). When the switch is on, the output to the 1/4" jack is pre fader. Which means I could control the volume level with each "AUX" knob.

Did I get it?

Pretty much got it! There is also an Aux send next to the meter that will control the overall signal of the channels combined - like the master fader but only for the monitor. The pre switch you will have to check the manual for which is pre and post setting. You want it set to pre fader so the faders do not adjust the monitor output. Post fader is more for effect settings.

Thanks to all of you who posted, particularly the Lonman - - I got it under "complete" control

Two last questions:
a) The way the Yamaha board is configured, there is only one "AUX" 1/4" output jack to plug a monitor into, while the line denoted as "Monitor" has two (R&L) output jacks. How would I connect two (2) monitors to the "AUX" output?
b) I'm not sure that I actually have control on adding "effects" to the "AUX" line?

BTW, with the Peavey set the way it "should be", I like the speaker so much that I am going to purchase another one this morning.

Between my partner and I, we'll have two 15" QSC's, two 12" QSC's, two 10" Peaveys and the Fender Passport. That should allow us to handle any type of job (dj vs kj) (private vs public) in most any size venue. I'm psyched!

We have also been talking about getting subs at some point.

You just use the Aux. You can connect two speakers to the amp you are using for the monitor. The actual monitor send is more for recording & is an overall of the main mix, not adjustable individually.

There is an Aux send in the effects section that should put the effect you are using into the monitor - try to use as little as possible as this can be a great feedback creator.

Subs will make all the difference in the world under all those speakers.

As to the question I asked as to how I would run two monitor out from the "AUX" line, consider that I am not using an "amp", all the speakers are powered. Could I use a splitter/adapter?

And in playing around with "all" of the effects knobs, none impact the output to the "AUX" jack. In reviewing the manual, I just read that the "Effect" knob in the "Master Send" controls "does not effect the level of the signal sent from the "Effect" bus to the internla didgital effect processor". So, I think that means that the singers won't hear the effects through the monitor even if they'd/I'd like to have them there?

Most powered speakers have a through ajck, just daisy chain them together.

The Aux knob under the parameter knob in the effects section is supposed send the effect to the Aux output - which will go to whatever it is being sent. The Aux send master (next to the meter) still needs to be turned up. The Aux in the effects may just have to be set higher to really hear them.

As and old singer whose hearing isnt the best esp highs above2-3k here is how I have adapted to different systems. I will give one song for an example. It is Pocket Full OF Gold. (SC)Listen to it then read on. BTW it is not country to me nor do I sing it like country.

Sometimes when my hearing isnt sharp If I can pop my ears it helps immensely. During the first line "He slipped the ring off his finger"" I prefer monitor only noEFX, during "when he walked in the room" I prefer hearing the reverbs in the room to blend my tremelo with them. Then during the chorus I go some up in pitch and sing like an Irish tenor. I need to hear chorus only to harmonize with them and on the last word be in perfect pitch with and blend with them entirely.

How do I do this? I turn or angle the stage monitor "with a 90 degree dispersion spread" Where in one area it is prominent and louder than mains. Then a few steps away the monitor and mains are equal. Farther on you cant hear the monitor esp if wyou have one main angled back tow3ards the stage.

When somebody says I cant hear the monitor they are a typical karaoke singer that is rooted to one spot. I teach them these tecniques and 90 % of them never go back to the monitor but they will use the sweet spot where they can hear both.

Each venue will have to be set up different and some I just run a monitor back towards the stage from the opposite side.

I do like to run ther compressed and Lexicon vocal to the monitor and use an AUX send.

And as an added post I do not like a loud sub woofer in my ear that drowns everything else out.

Me neither I like a nice balanced subwoofer that compliments the system, but will still let you know it's there!

The EQ smiley was used in older HiFi systems for old fogies with hearing loss on the lower and higher ends and amps with poor freq response also. Just remember if you are doing a 50th wedding anniversary Eq accordingly. :) Simply because you will be running at lower levels and over powering will not compensate. Old singers will want the monitor with no EFX and newer karaoke singers will want mains only or a combo.

So there are a few basic rules but setting up in strange venues and different crowds takes experience. Using a snake helps me in fact I cant set up in the singer area anymore, I hear the singer more live than on the system.. BTW I set the the Aux send post so if the main level is turned up, the monitor is also.

I do think we have established some basic rules on setting up monitors and stage setup. The JBL Eon10 G2 is the best stage monitor I have ever used in systems with 1 k power or less. With multiple speakers that are placed strategically for added power it still works. Google them on Ebay You cant hardly buy one even used for much less than a 15".

GAWD I hate giving away trade secrets but nobody here is on the net 'cept Masterblaster down south and we are not in direct competition. My secrets come from many years experience in many vocations. They are not due to super intelligence but many years of trial and error. At my age if you dont discuss them you forget them.

I'm back to the question of using an adapter for setting up dual monitors from the "AUX1" jack. The Peavey speaker has three inputs, but no output for daisy chaining.

Also, since I can't get effects through to the monitor, I can only conclude that this quote form the manual is telling me exactly that: "The 'Master Send' control does not effect the level of the signal sent from the 'Effect' bus to the internal digital effect processor".

Any different takes on the preceding?

As to the sub we're considering, it's more for dance music than for karaoke!

Lastly, I'd like to here more about "angling the mains back towards the stage". How's that possible?

Eric without going back and reading your original post. The Aux send is a line level output. Although it could concievably drive two amps I would recommend an audio distribution amp.

On the channel strips there are adjustments to route any EFX to that Aux send.

Why do you need two monitors?

In karaoke the sub woofer level is adjusted for lower levels in karaoke.

I run some venues where both mains are pointed towards the stage. I have run venues where the mains were in opposite corners and one pointed directly back at the stage. In answer to your question the speaker farthest away from the singer can be angled with a half stage coverage so the singer can hear mains only.

A typical speaker has a front to back DB ratio and a typical 90 degree dispersion angle. As one migrates from the dispersion angle to the back the DB"s decrease in an exponential fashion. If the speaker is placed next to a wall this formula no longer applies and the power rating approaches near to or double.

All the speakers are powered

There are two output jack labeled monitor, but that line doesn't allow me to "mix" the vocals and music as to volume levels into the monitor(s)

The "AUX1" output allows me the opportunity to do such "mixing", but that line has only 1 jack. So, if I ever "need" to run two monitors from the mixing board while retaining control over the volume out for each line/element, I am wondering if using a splitter on the AUX line out could cause any problem, say with the amount of ohms?

If the speakers are powered then I assume they are terminated in a typical 75 ohms then provide an isolation amp for looping (DA). I would assume the Aux output could be used for multiple powered amps and dont see any problems.

At this point I require chain make and models for specs or schematics. Then I can advise using OEM specs or for a fee can provide engineering consults for improvements. I do not normally offer these services on a DYI or amateur forum.

From old age and loosening up and due to the fact I am no longer making big bucks as an engineer I offer free services which are a result of more than 50 years in the electronic industry. If you can tolerate the occasional BS from an old man then glean from these clinics. If you give me any (@$%&#!) I will clam up again.. Ladies will always get first priority and often result in personal Im help..

If anybody here truly requires tech phone support and is honest I will provide a phone number. In fact this my preferred form of tech support only secondary to hands on. While these forums offer an indirect sometimes slow solution I now offer lets do it now approach. And to think I wouldnt do this for less than $400/hr.

Like asked would you really need two separate monitors? I can see two monitors being controlled by the one output, this is what I do as well, but I seriously doubt you will ever find in a karaoke situation you will need two individual volume controls for two separate monitors. Using the Aux 1 output, you cannot do that. If your board had 2 Aux sends, then yes you could control two monitors individually.

It's probably correct that I'll likely never need two monitors for Karaoke, but I figured that there must occasions where 2 monitors are in use because the Yamaha offers two separate outputs labeled "monitor". And one of those two "monitor" output lines is where I initially tried to connect the monitor/speaker, with disappointing results for karaoke! I think that is why I was asking about connecting two speaker to the "AUX" line, primarily, because of the "other" two monitor lines.

Furthermore, after additional review of the Yamaha manual, I found in the manual a diagram that specifically shows a monitor, an an example, of the equipment that can be connected to the "AUX1" output line. So, now there's three possible monitor outputs that I know of, but just one of them provides the control over vocals and music - the "AUX" line!

I guess if we were supporting live musicians the extra monitor lines would come in handy?

Again I said that 'monitor' output is for a recording scenerio in which the person doing the recording can monitor the entire mix from a separate area. It's not meant for floor monitors on stage. The Aux send is for monitors on stage.

Yes in a live band situation, extra monitor lines would be desired, however this mixer does not have that ability. It has one Aux send for monitors.
