I have a Peavey XR696F powered mixer and am trying to run a powered sub out of the 1/4" monitor line output jack. According to the manual, (even included a picture of how to set this up), when running in stereo, (which I am), all I need to do is run a 1/4" cord from the 1/4" monitor line output jack on the front of the mixer to the input jack in the back of the powered sub. Then turn up the powered sub's own level control. Then from there, sub level is control completely separate from the mains with the monitor gain knob. However, I get nothing. Any ideas?

As far as I know you cannot run a powered mixer into a powered speaker or sub.

You can if you use the "line outs." They're there specifically for running powered monitors. The passive mains are run out of the amplified outputs on the back of the mixer. I am able to get the subs to work out of the L and R line outputs on the front of the mixer, but then I have no way to control the subs without affecting the mains since those outputs are controlled with the "main" level knob. I'm supposed to be able to hook the subs up to the monitor and then use the monitor level knob to control the subs' level independently of the mains.

Yes you can hook powered subs to a powered mixer provided it has pre-amp out puts, for that matter you can hook up external power amps to powered mixers if needed. I wouldn't use the monitor line out, use the left/mono line out - reason being is the monitor channels would need to be turned up indepently on each channel. Hooking it to the left/mono line out, it will recieve the same signal as your mains & you can set the level on the sub itself - once set, you shouldn't need to mess with it again. Only problem that may occur is some boards cut the signal to the main speaker outs once something is plugged into the line out which could be fixed by running mono & just have your mains run on the right channel.

Fixed it. The B-52 ACT-18 powered sub has a switch on the back of it for single or dual subs. I flipped it to dual subs and it worked fine. I used the monitor out instead of the Left/Main out because I wanted to be able to control the level of bass independently of the main mix. Reason for that is that I don't have as many good quality CDG's as I'd like to yet, and some of the cheaper brands don't seem to have as much bass as I think they should; so now I can boost the subs on those cheaper discs if I feel the need to. I left the monitor level down on all the mic inputs. Then I ran RCA stereo line outputs from the player to the stereo line (channel 11 & 12) inputs on the front of the mixer. I was then able to adjust the sub level by using the ch. 11 & 12 monitor output along with the monitor gain control. The only drawback in this configuration is that whenever I want to turn the music down for any reason, I have to remember to turn down the monitor gain at the same time as the mains. Small trade-off in my mind for being able to have this kind of sub control. BTW, the B-52's worked like a champ! It was an outdoor wedding gig and everyone was impressed with the sound. Couldn't get enough compliments.

Although your way will work, just more hassle. I run subs all the time off the main out & if you get a song too bass heavey, turn the bass on the channel eq down, opposite for a song that doesn't have enough.

I thought about that, but I didn't like how it sounded when I boosted the bass on the "el cheapo" two-way mains I was using. When I get my ISP's hooked up, I'll try it that way again.

BTW, I wonder what the crossover point is for the bass EQ on the input channels on an XR696F?

I'd have to check the manual, but usually the bass boost point is around 80hz. Some mixers go as low as 75 & as high as 100.
