Anyone know of any good shows that start fairly early in Cancun? We're planning to go anytime between now and sometime in April.
Would love to be able to escape for a short time and hit a show, but since we will have our 5 yr old with us, I won't be able to escape for long or too late.
Preferably in the hotel zone and not downtown so I don't get lost.
Somewhere that we could include our daughter would be even better.
Thanks in advance, guys!

I know the Royal Resorts have karaoke, if I remember right it starts about 8:00
Check on the Royal Sands, the Royal Islander and the Royal Carribean resorts
They have it diffferent nights at the different resorts. Use google to get to thier resort page, hopefully they will have info listed there.
Side note: I have 2 timeshare weeks in Cancun for sale.(shameless plug)

Not sure about Cancun, but I know that Dreams Resorts has maintained their 'Karaoke Night' in the Dominican Republic. I'll be going there in 2 weeks and have been practicing since December...I can hardly wait!

Any input on why someone would want to go to the Dominican would be much appreciated. My wife and I are looking to go "somewhere" and maybe that's "where"?

She mentioned Cancun, but that doesn't excite me. After the Natalie Halloway story, Aruba is out!

Any other suggestions not too far from Florida? If the locale offers karaoke, that would be good!

Eric:
Our last holiday was to the Dominican Republic. We went to Playa Dorada Puerto Plata.
I highly recommend it. Please remember that if you go, and if you choose to go off resort, that this IS a third world country. You will see garbage on the sides of the streets. You will see run down buildings. You will see homes with gates built like fortresses around them. But, if you choose to go off resort and into the city of Puerto Plata, you will also see people who will smile at you at every turn (literally). You will see people who will greet you as a friend the first time they meet you. You will see people that, despite being extremely poor, see that as no excuse to dress sloppily and take great pride in their dress, so much so that you might feel under-dressed compared to them .
You will see a country that, despite being one of the poorest in the world, is also one of the friendliest.
When we were there, they were extremely friendly, valued children at the highest (we had our - at the time- 2 yr old daughter with us), and also made me feel like I belonged there. I am "white" and most of the population is what we "european - types" would consider "black", although what they consider black is "pure" black, not diluted, like most of the population is.
They are so friendly there that our goal as a family has become to relocate there as residents and obtain our citizenship.
I HIGHLY recommend going. I also recommend going "off resort".
We went in to the city via "gua-gua", mini van taxi-ish thing, (several times) and got dropped off in the poorest, most run down section of the city. Yet, despite this, AT NO TIME did I feel unsafe or in any kind of danger of being robbed or accosted. On the contrary, we were smiled at and greeted with a friendly "Hola" every 5 feet - LITERALLY! (Honest!) by EVERYONE!.
BUT, I will say this:
If you cannot handle the reality of a third world country, (one of the poorest in the world), and cannot abide by that, DO NOT GO! And if you do decide to do so anyway, stay on resort.
But if you want one of the richest, most heart warming experiences of your life, regardless of the circumstances, then go, and LEAVE the resort and see the REAL Dominican Republic.
I cannot say it any more clear than this:
The people are so friendly and heart-warming that they made us want to live there permanently, despite their third world status,
Can it be any better that that?

My family used to travel to Cancun almost annually, but we got a taste of Dominican hospitality and have never been back. Like many people will tell you, Cancun has ultimately become "Americanized"...which is fine if all you want to do is party. Personally, I like to return from my vacations feeling relaxed.
We're travelling to Dreams Resorts in La Romana...it will be our 2nd trip there. Actually, the last time we were there it was a Sunscape Resort. Dreams apparently bought it out, but we're told that the resort staff and activities are pretty much the same. We fly into Punta Cana and take a 1.5hr bus ride to the resort. Like diafel mentioned, if you're off-resort you can expect to see the happiest poverty stricken people just about everywhere. The exceptions being the Haitians who migrate in seasonally to work the fields. But not to worry, you really have to go out of your way to encounter them. There are 2 primary vocations for Dominican residents...sugar cane and tourism. So naturally, they really go out of their way for the tourist dollar. The karaoke scene(@ the resort) the last time we were there was great! It was held in an outdoor amphitheater with an audience of at least 300. Most of the tourists there were European and their "old favorites" are a bit different from ours...which was a nice change of pace despite the language barrier. I've been told that Dreams has changed the 'Karaoke Night' a little bit... but its supposed to be bigger & better.

I had just thought there were two Dominican airports. Now that I realize there are many more...

For those in the know, would you recommend staying in the East, South or North?

or of the two resorts people have named, which do you prefer?

If you want to tour Santo Domingo, the oldest European city in the new world, founded by Christopher Columbus himself, and visit his grave that contains partial remains (some are actually in Spain), then go to La Romana. Puerto Plata is too far to travel in a day. But if you just want warm sun and sand with only a little sight seeing, including Jungle tours and much more (which we never bothered with), then Puerto Plata is fine. We were told by many other tourists that the tours presented were amazing.
Also go into either city and tour the amber museums. Well worth it.

Going the first week in March. Can't go for too long this trip, but I hope it's so enjoyable we'll return soon. We still have to get to LV by spring and I would like to get to NY before summer, as well!

Diafel, a couple of places you might want to check out in the Cancun area, if you want to leave the "Zona de Turista", are Isla Mujeres, a small island off the coast. Also look into Playa del Carmen, (smaller, more secluded). The Mayan ruins @ Tulum are also pretty cool. I was there in the 80's, so things could be different, but you might want to check it out.

Have Fun

Rosario

Thanks for the tips. Hubby has been before so the Isle is def on the list as is Chicen Itza and xcaret. Tulum may or may not be on the list. We will have to see how my knee holds up. Again, if anyone will be there when we are, let me know. Maybe we can find a karaoke show or two together.
CHeers!

I was in Cozumel this last summer and I went to Tulum and was disappointed, the site is very bare because the Spanish wanted to Christianize the people so they destroyed many of the artifacts and defaced most of their buildings and temples. ( that was what we were told by the guide when we were there ) Chichen Itza is so much better and I really enjoyed that site.

Xel-Há is more like a natural water park and I also enjoyed myself there very much. If you have a bad knee Xel-Há may not be for you, although snorkeling is not very physically taxing. They also have a river you can tube down which might work better for you. The food and drinks were good and were a part of the package. I'd love to go back someday soon. Rudy.

Now Diafel, don't get gettin' all suntanned. That beautiful White BC Winter Tan is something to be proud of! Seriously, you may want to go and do a bit of fake and bake before you go. Have a great time. :D

OK So I'm back. Had a geat time! Karaoke night at our hotel was Tuesday. Their book was VEEERRRY thin..... and contained English, Italian and Spanish karaoke, which made it even thinner. Of course, in the rush out the door, I forgot to bring my own discs, which turned out to be very, very bad! I could only do 2 songs in their books, the rest being songs that were either out of my range or songs I didn't know. And they were 2 songs I really didn't care to do. But I did them anyway. The sound was not the greatest, but I think what the major problem was, was that I found myself straining because the "tech" only adjusted the sound for the first few bars that were sung and then left it. My next song, I knew better and sung with the mic further away than normal in order to get him to set the volume louder, I then used mic control (as it should be!) to keep the sound level. Rotation order was non existent and I managed to finish my 2 songs within 15 minutes or so. Made me happy because I was then free to head up to bed so I could be fresh for the next day's events!
