You have to be careful with the props/instruments. I guess it depends on the crowd/venue for me. Props work great for private events but I'm very reluctant to use any of them in the bars. They can become a distraction and annoy the non singers/other bar patrons who may otherwise appreciate the good singers.

I have percussion toys for my use at home...but not at a club. Also, being a drummer I find any non-drummer playing a percussion instrument highly annoying! You wouldn't bring in a saxophone and let people honk on it for fun would you? What's the difference? Any musical instrument played badly is bad news.

Besides, it's just one more thing to carry in or get broken/stolen.

I hate it when some guy brings his harmonica to play during his song...and this is usually a guy that actually plays pretty well. The point is though, that -, not open mic night.

I used to have a guy that did that ALL the time. He always sang piano man by Billy Joel. It was kind of neat the first time, but then it became a weekly thing and got old. Plus, he didn't know how to back away from the microphone with the harmonica, so I was constantly adjusting his mic level.
