I hope no one misunderstands me and thinks that by putting my karaoke library onto hard drive, that I am purposely committing 'piracy'. My company does run two shows at the same time/day...BUT we also own two sets of original cdg's! Gosh, we even own two sets of Pioneer laser disc's which we don't use any longer.

I would never ever give or sell any cdg file to anyone! This would be counterproductive to my business as well as blatantly illegal!

Lonnie, does that mean you actually own two sets of original discs then?

He doesn't need two sets as long as he is only running one computer at a time.

Right tell that to the shareholders of Enron and customers, suppliers, and employees of companies that go bankrupt, embezzle, and a host of other illegal and/or immoral activities to gain personal wealth.

Actually, yes I do! However I don't do shows anymore with them as I have sold off all of my PA gear for the second system. But I do have a completely separate set of discs for my 2nd show computer.

WHat does the BBB have to do with being legal. I am & have no record with the BBB. I have a business license, tax id, pay my employees & report their taxes & get 1099 from my clubs, pay for all my discs & equipment, do not bootleg multi systems.
Am I not legal because I am not affiliated with the BBB? I think I am!

The fact you're incorporated (or an LLC) does a lot to bolster your credibility as well as adding that layer of protection from anyone going after you. Now I haven't heard of anyone getting nailed for copyright while running a show but I did have a friend who had a guy chip a tooth on a microphone and sue him for the dental bills. Since it was a guy running on his own, no business paperwork and no corporate veil the court put a lien on his house until he paid off the dental bill (The guy got matching porcelain crowns for his front teeth very $$$$).

I would advise everyone pay the $310 to get at least an LLC, and just pay the franchise tax on it. It's cheap insurance you don't lose more than your rig should something happen legally. Again, just my opinion and your mileage may vary ;)

That has nothing to do with the statement that the BBB somehow proves you're legal. I know all about the differences betwee a sole & incorporated. And if you get insurance that will cover injury, then there is no reason to go LLC.

ASCAP represents their clients (the copyright holders) in regards to the public performance of the copyrighted songs and not, as I understand it, the copying or reproduction of recordings.

ASCAP also does not represent all of the music writers and/or publishers, only those of which are it's members. Therefore, even though a bar had an ASCAP licence, they could still infringe copyright by publicly playing material written by a composer who is not a member of ASCAP.

How can ASCAP know where to send the monies collected?
How do they know just what is being played in any particular club at any given time?
Seems to me that they are sending monies to people that don't deserve it. Cuz their music has never been played in a club.

That is if they are really sending any monies anywhere like they say they do!

Actually there have been a lot of changes going on in the digital music world. For the most up to date information on mp3g karaoke, ripping, burning etc goto: thekiaa.org Sound choice did release a press release3 in September of 08 saying they will persue karaoke companies which have converted their dics to a mp3g format as long as they have the originals.

ASCAP and BMI both lisence music for public playing. Every so offten the venue must make a list of all music played and summit this to ASCAP & BMI this is how they get the ratio of music played and who to send the money to. Some artists get money for music never played but some don't get enough. It is not a fair system but it is the best they have come up with. Music playedon radio and TV is strickly logged and this is where most of the royalty money is made. A buddy of mine work in the radio & TV industry for the last 30 years.

IMHO: this "kiaa.org" appears to be hiding something. There's no whois information, no list of proud members etc... The "membership" rules are unbeliveably biased against KJ's and in favor of "karaoke labels"...

(of course, if they actually enforced their own "membership eligibility" requirements for these "labels", there wouldn't be any because NONE would qualify.)

I am just starting up a Karaoke/DJ service and I was going to use a laptop to do my shows. But I was sent to a website http://www.karaokeantipiracyagency.com/ they say you can't rip your CDG's to your hard drive as it violates the copyright. If you want to do this you have to get a new licence from the manufacturer. But now I am told that there is a way to do this legally without the extra fee? Can anyone give me the definitive answer. I would love to use my computer but I don't want to pay more fees.

sssshhhh..Here's the secret. Go ahead and rip your cdg's to your hardrive. NOBODY will care and look to drop a dime on you . JUST DON"T make multiple drives and sell them on EBAY ..don't take out a full page ad -adverstising 200,000 karaoke songs in your library. Go rip your cdg's ..get started now its a pain-staken adventure ! And good luck !! you just joined a family of 1,000's of KJ's and DJ's who have done the same thing
