Such an easy question, do doubt that a Laptop is the way to go  Price dropped, hard drives keeps getting bigger and a good laptop will perform just has good as a desktop  In fact, not even necessary to use an external drive, you can get a 500g, 2.5" drive, so basicly all you need is a spare (mirror) drive if anything goes wrong...

Yikes! Better hope your life is accident free!

It took me TWO MONTHS to transfer all my disks to my harddrive. I'd hate to think that if something happened to my computer (lost, stolen, dropped, natural disaster), I'd have to go through that again.

My way, if something happens to the laptop, I can buy a new one, reinstall the hosting software and plug in my external drive. I could be ready to host a gig in about 20 minutes that way.

Your way, you are definately going to be missing some gigs! Better hope you didn't take too many advanced deposits! (or your back to using disks... ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!! Shoot me now!) :D :D

Did you miss where he said he would mirror the drive?

Having only one copy of any drive -- external or internal -- is just begging for trouble. If you have one copy on an external drive you are just as much at risk.

Sure I did. I have mine mirrored too.

Take your mirror drive and start copying....

So what was your reference to two months?

Hmmm, I'd say he has a different view of what "mirror" means

Here's how I see this; Using a fast and large drive, you enter ALL your mp3+g files and your music and once you're done and complete, you clone the drive using Acronis or Norton Ghost, not a back up but an IDENTICAL drive, this way you'll have 2 drives capable of booting on your machine, if one goes down, all you need is a screw driver to replace the drive

Also, I would back up my music on an external drive just in case...

External USB drives are slow, fragile, you need to connect, disconnect but why do you need them in your show when you can now get a 500g drive that would respond much faster

Hey, just my common sense

From one who has used computers for karaoke & DJ almost a decade I am sitting here biting my tongue. The first comp I used for shows was a 650 MB CPU with 256MB ram . The OS was Win 98SE.

I was ripping when nobody knew what it was. Since then I have used 2K Pro and now use XP. With each system I had to tune or eliminate all unneeded processes. Google optimizing vista...

SOP with a DAW is using about a 10 gig for the OS and putting the music libraries on a second internal or external hard drive. Right now I have 3 backups of music and 2 laptops to back up my tower. Before laptops I had 2 small drives with OS but never had to use the second one.

BTW the first comp I had that I could record without audio dropouts was a 1.2 gig with 512 mb ram.

With 2k PRO in the task mngr there were 17 active processes. With this laptop Im on right now there are 47 running. Id be curious on your Vista how many are running.

CNTRL ALT DELETE click processes...

I have 31 active processes on my XP Pro desktop at work and that's only because I don't want to touch anything  My own laptop or desktop will have not more than 20 with 2 gig or ram with NO Vista, I'll never have this Vista on any of my machines, XP Pro is still available and supported up to 2012

I think the HP laptop I chose should be fine for what I'm going to use it for. Almost EVERY laptop I looked at that was under 7 or 800.00, has Vista ( one version or the other). You can get what is being a "downgrade" to XP for an extra $150.00. I've read posts on this forum where people are using Vista with no problem, so I can't see putting out the extra, just because I'm more comfortable with XP. I learned XP, I can learn Vista. I like the idea of having an external harddrive, because if something happens to my laptop (while at a show), I can unplug it from my laptop, and plug it into my player, and I'm rolling again in 2 minutes.

Thanks for all the input.

Rosario

Downgrade? No that is supposed to be UPGRADE! Vista sucks bottom line. I have it on 2 machines now, not by choice & will be upgrading to XP here soon.

Don't do that Lonnie, wait until Windows 7 comes out, probably end of this year, and upgrade to it. I think you will be happier than going back to XP for the most part.

I would agree with you, I've been reading good things about Windows 7 and I have a feeling that this time, they've done it right  Good reports from the beta testers...

But to be honest, I would probably do the same as what Lonnie said, the end of year is a long way

Lonman, the reference to the term " downgrade ", is not the term that I use for it, that is the term that is being used by the computer manufacturers. On all of their advertisements, it is stated that you can have the windows operating system "downgraded" to Xp for an additional $150.00. They also say thet they don't recommend buying a computer with Vista already on it , and then trying to change it to XP, something about it could disrupt the entire computer, and that all warrantees will be no good. Therefore, they are recommending that if you want XP, to order it as the original operating system. I'm not a computer whiz, by any stretch of the imagination, so if it comes with Vista, I guess that's what I'll have to deal with. I am currently using XP, and would have liked to continue to use it, but not at that cost.
