Oh I hear ya, dude. I cherish my regs, but realize that if I screw 'em over, they'll go somewhere else in a heartbeat.
To me, the payback is seeing the same faces, and hearing how they've told their buddies what a great show I run.
That's why it's a curse as well, because then, your rotation grows.
Some singers have laughingly told me they DON'T tell others about me, as they wanted the show to stay smaller, rather than bigger. Problem with that is, the venue is hurt...

If I find a good show, I pass the word, regardless of the rotation ramifications. If I find a bad show, I let people know(warn them) about that one too.

I might attend other kj's show and am not loyal to any of them. If I like the show I will return. If not oh well. I have no issues with other shows having long rotations, I'm use to that at my shows. Most of the shows I attend though have poor sound KJ's that wouldn't know how to mix right even if you showed them how. I could actually go in and steal most of their shows away due to better sound.

I use Compuhost. I can't tell you how in love with this program I am.
There is important pieces of information here if you're trying to maintain a fair order: When the song slip was submitted, when the performer sang last, and when they can expect to sing again. In addition, new singers are highlighted in red.
The reason that there is no "perfect solution" to a karaoke rotation is because it is dynamic, and constantantly altering its state. Joe come in and is going to sing all night. Susie comes in and wants to sing a duet with Joe, and John comes in, sings one song and leaves.
Add to the fact that the LENGTH is always changing. Do you really have 18 singers, or in reality its just 12 as 6 aren't planning on singing this rotation. A karaoke rotation is the chaos principle personified!
Thus, the host has to be aware of these dynamics, and alter his method to coincide with the current situation.
You have a "new singer" policy, but also a "duet policy", and this has to change as the rotation grows and shrinks.
If you've only got 7 singers at the beginning of the night, you might be more liberal with duets, but tighten up as the rotation gets longer.
With a small rotation I just put the newbies at the bottom. As it grows, I begin to slip them in the slots of vacating singers, or those skipping a rotation. What slot they will "inhert" depends on the song they are singing... so it doesn't get to mushy, hip hoppy or country.

[quote="BruceFan4Life @ Tue Feb 10, 2009 3:31 pmYOUR singers like it??? And exactly HOW MANY singers do you OWN?? For that matter, HOW MANY SHOWS do you do at this time? You claim to SPECIALIZE in Restaurant type environments so HOW MANY restaurant gigs are you SPECIALIZING in at this time??? ONE??? How many singers were at your last show? How many of them will come back every week???
Yes, KARY has invited me to his show in COLORADO. Like I'm going to jump on a plane and fly to COLORADO, then rent a car, then book a room for the night just to sing some songs and share a few beers with a guy that I don't know. [/quote]
I own none, I call them mine as a gesture of friendship- but you wouldn't get that. They prove themselves to be in many ways. When I start a new venue, they come to get the ball rolling, and keep coming. When they have private parties, they call me- either to work OR be their guest. Loads of cards and other stuff on my birthday and Christmas AND Valentine's Day- and much much more. I hope that at some point, you allow yourself to experience this level of friendship.
As to the rest of your silliness, even if I never did another show, I would STILL have all of the years of experience and knowledge of this business the you never will. As a matter of fact, once anyone has done ONE show, they are way ahead of you.
As for Colorado: It's a chance for friendship- something that you have rejected here, and by your hostility, probably everywhere.
I know that some of my posts to you ( and only you) may sound harsh, but I actually NEVER get upset about what's posted on an internet forum full of strangers. You do.
I truly think the very best thing for you would be to find other interests, and take a breather from ALL internet activity except checking your E-mail. A bit of fresh air, new faces, different locale..... all good for healing the soul.

If that were the case, you would have so many shows that you'd be passing some of them off to other KJ's because you were too busy to do any more....unless you have a following of THREE and they don't sing very well??? Maybe that is why you don't have a gig that you have been at for at least 6 MONTHS? You haven't seemed to have made enough "friends" to keep you in business very long at any given location, for a guy who SPECIALIZES" in upscale restaurants. I've asked a few people about your shows and all I have gotten back as a response are a few chuckles. Do you really wear sandals when there's snow on the ground? What's up with that?

This calls for an entire new thread about networking and friends. The invitation still stands Joe....

Bruce, why do you continue? You asked ONE person, Cueball, who came to a venue that, per my own post here, was in the throes of death due to ownership problems. Please see the thread titled "My Tuesday Nite Is Dying". You, um...exaggerated... about the " few people" , as you do when you say "you checked" something out, hence the " 6 MONTHS" comment, also false. My crappy ( and what I thought was transitional) time didn't start until the end of November.
I have, thankfully, been finally getting some of the answers and changes I discussed back when you were lucid, including a successful replacement for the venue Cueball gave me the pleasure of visiting. The man is a pleasure.
Cueball told the truth about the sandals, though. As a matter of fact, when I sell myself for straight DJ work, it used to be under "Sandalman Sounds"
I wear them for four reasons:
1) I have wide flat Fred Flintsone feet and they are more comfortable in sandals.
2) I CAN where them in winter because I am a lifelong Martial Artist and ex-fighter. My feet have been conditioned to an extent that normal winter temperatures don't bother them.
3) They have become a trademark
4) For karaoke, they add a sense of casual silliness, kind of a Jimmy Buffet good times kind of feeling.
The venues all understand this at time of hire, and have never given me a problem.

Maybe you should name your company, Flintstone Karaoke or Grasshopper Karaoke. It might draw some people that were just curious.
You could even shave your head for that Kwai Chang Caine look and try to get some gigs in some Shaolin type Chinese Restaurants too.

Oh Ollie, Have you started celebrating the Holiday already? I have slandered no one. All I have done is ask a few questions and offered a few suggestions. Some one shouldn't make claims that are false. I know of one KJ around here that claims to have 25,000 songs for karaoke, but when you check their song book, they barely have 10,000 songs. It seems like their book is missing more than just the last few months of updates. I just think that there should be truth in advertising. Like Lonnie said: If you offer Karaoke and Dance music, you should advertise it as such so the die hard karaoke singers can choose accordingly.

Waiting for the next rotation might be too late. I'd rather sing any moment that I please than wait for the rotation to be completely off.

2) With hair sorta disappearing, I would love to do the "Cueball Look" , but my ugly self just doesn't have a head shaped for it.....
Did the Peking Duck House for awhile, but they were too pacifistic....hmm- where to find Shaolin Sezchuan............

As a matter of fact, after reading this, I googled Joe Chartreuse Karaoke and some of Bruce's comments came up. Can you say "Actionable"? Personally, I could care less, but for yourself, Bruce, you might be a bit more...circumspect. Someone less loveable than myself might be less forgiving, and you could find yourself in a bad position. Don't get me wrong. Batter away if you will, but it would be a good idea to be a bit careful in your phraseology.... As it stands, you ARE actionable. As a matter of fact, you have put this forum in a bad position for allowing undocumented allegations to stand undeleted and open to the search engines. Howsabout a bit 'o love instead? I would understand if it was all directed at me, but it's not. You post junk about everyone... I really think it's time you took a break.

Not a bad idea, but not really what I meant. How about this:
Instead of saying something like " you don't know anything and your way is stupid, and everyone says so " , one might consider the following:
" I have experienced shows run in the manner that you have suggested, and don't find them to my taste. Have you considered trying....."
It's just human nature to ignore straight out hostile criticism, yet most will at least consider ideas if presented in a POSITIVE manner.
If it's just an opinion, state it that way, and the reasons for your beliefs. If objective FACTS are available ( by this I mean PROVEABLE), use them. If they are not, and the other party still disagrees, let it go.
I have had heated debates with Eric on venue policies, yet I know that are viewpoints difer merely because of different, yet equally valid experiences. I respect his judgement and expertise.
Lon and I disagree on occasion in regard to music and manufacturers, but I would be the first, as an engineer, to say that he is one of the most knowledgeable people on the forum in regard to equipment, and feel that his taste in tracks is as valid as anyone else's.
Weed, Knight, and many others disagree and debate me in the neverending disc vs. PC arguments. In the end, I don't believe they are wrong, and I don't believe I'm wrong- just different ideas.
No hostility, no name calling ( or very little.. ), no making things up about each other. Just intelligent (hopefully) debate- and when it's over, we turn of the computer and forget about it. no PERSONAL involvement, and why should there be? If one wants personal, one should seek out a real live person.
If one has a past of posting untrue info and getting caught often, or one has a habit of posting bashing or personally negative posts almost exclusively, one might lose credibility.
Again, I ask that you step back and re-assess what a forum like this is.
I mean absolutely no offense to you at all, and this post is merely an observation.
