Thanks for suggestions, "Sing what you like" sounds like good advice, trouble is, I love all sorts of music from Baroque to Hard Rock, and just about everything in between.

Then there is no trouble or problem... you're not in a vacuum when you're performing, simply try a lot of different styles and see which one gets the reaction you're looking for. Learn to "read your crowd."

An example where an upbeat choice might not work so well is if you decided to sing
"Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" at the annual senior center barbecue or "Fat Bottomed Girls" at the Bariatric surgery center.

Thank you,
I take your point about "reading your crowd"
I think that what impressed me most about the crowd reaction last week was the warmth, both during a song, and afterwards. Agreed, lots of those present were friends of my daugher, but, even so lots of strangers made very kind comments.
I started taking singing lessons as a mid-life "Kick up the Rear" to combat a phobia of singing and public speaking, and self-esteem issues. Those issues have now receded and I find that music and singing are fascinating, a problem is thrown up, dealt with, and leads to another problem, a bit like unravelling a huge birds' nest in a fishing line.
Sorry if all that sounds a bit precious "It's only singing a song for a bit of fun" but we are all different, and the help and support from this site have been invaluable.
Ian

Ripman, I was HOPING it wasn't just me that felt that way.

I've never seen ANYBODY dance to that song, ever!

Maybe some hand clapping and extra beer drinking.

Wouldn't want to sing kryptonite if superman were in the room?
