I went to a karaoke show last night where the owner is nice enough to put out bowls of popcorn for the customers. He saw that I was reaching for some popcorn so he asked me if I wanted my own own of popcorn to which I said yes. When I got called up to sing, the people sitting next to me grabbed the bowl of popcorn that had been given to me and when I came back to my seat, I couldn't reach it so I asked the owner if he could get me another bowl of popcorn and he obliged. It wasn't long before the guy sitting next to me reached into my new bowl of popcorn instead of the bowl that he and his friends had helped themselves to while I was singing. I really didn't mind the first time he reached in but I did try to take popcorn from the opposite side of the bowl. Shortly there after the guy sitting next to me began coughing into his hands and then proceeded to reach for my newest bowl of popcorn and I stopped him because of his coughing into his hands. The guy got all up in arms about me being disgusted about his lack of consideration for others because of his lack of hygiene skills and manners. As the guy next to me started to try to justify his behavior, loudly I might add, the owner came over to investigate but really did nothing to handle the situation. As the volume got louder and the insults began to fly, I made the decision to go to a different karaoke bar before it escalated to the point where violence would ensue. I felt that the owner should have done more to rectify the situation but he didn't.
How would others have handled this germ filled situation?

No I don't eat shared food. I don't want what other people have. There are a few people I don't even want them close enough to touch me.
These guys are nasty and then rude about it.
One thing that drives me crazy is when someone wants to get right in my face to talk to me. And they will follow as I step back or turn to the side

Should have asked for another bowl of popcorn.
I don't like shared food, either. Popcorn, pretzels, beer nuts, etc... they should be in small bowls, for each person (or pair of people). The cost is next to nothing, it makes you thirsty so you buy more drinks...
total win/win if the owner knows how to deal with a situation.
Imagine going ballistic over a bowl of free popcorn?! Sheesh!
Oh well, alcohol fueled arguements! !

Oh you have found possibly my biggest weakness...
I deteste bad manners. And in such a circumstance, I can not keep my mouth shut and say nothing.
Good manners cost nothing!

There is absolutely no way you could PAY me enough... to reach my hand into a "public" bowl of popcorn and take a munch. Uh-uh, not with a bunch of germy drunks. I share popcorn with my grandkids when watching cartoons... but never strangers. (or drunk friends either) :vomit
But then, I'm a buttered popcorn addict and I'm a bit of a bytch about sharing it anyhow;)

yup all kinds of nasties potentially in any public food source...nuts, popcorn, cheese platter etc.
Hepatitis, herpies, cold and flu...
to my mind it was a bad idea and the owner obviously knew it, otherwise he wouldnt have offered you a bowl of your own.

Nope, can't do it. I'm an RN in my real life, and have seen a lot, and developed lots of germ phobias. I could mention a few that we don't think much about, but you can drive yourself crazy. Just wash your hands, that's all I ask. At least shake, scratch, and pick with your non-dominant hand, so when you shake mine, I get the cleaner one.

I have a very agressive personality. I would have let the guy next to me know that it was unacceptable in no uncertain terms. In fact I probably would have grabbed his hand if I was quick enough. He wouldn't be grabbing in my bowl again.

Next time you get your own bowl of popcorn you should just pick your nose while everyone around you watches and deposit the booger on the end of the bowl claiming your stake to THAT BOWL. works eveytime ....

Nawwwww.
That's disgusting man! Everyone knows not to eat from the shared bowls in a bar!
People are nasty! I can't count how many times I've seen someone exit a crapper stall without stopping for soap and water! That's just gross man.
Now I'm wondering if the time when this lady got up, right in my face, and kissed my lips, whether or not she had herpes or whatever?
Her guy friend didn't look happy about it!

I dont get it...if EVERYBODY knows not to eat out of communial bowls, then why do the publicans or staff insist on putting them out?

Not unless I can have my own bowl
on the other hand Vicki.. if EVERYBODY knows not to EAT out of communial bowls, then why DO THEY STILL DO IT? why do they also insist on double dipping chip dip?
at least if there's a communial bowl put out, alot of times a person will pour some on to a napkin on the table and eat their own stash..
