Matt
The point I was making about vulgarities in karaoke was done in order to provide just one more reason, among many I offered, as to why a KJ might not want to use a customer's disc.
And while you jumped in and suggested ways to respond to the vulgarity problem, that was not my point. The point is/was that a KJ who doesn't play customer discs will never be blind-sided to find out that a disc has vulgarities on it.
And while you may have a different opinion about how to deal with this matter at your show, it doesn't change the possibility that a KJ might be able to avoid the problem altogether by not playing anyone's discs and, theoretically, not have to deal with it at all!
PS: I brought up the tanning bed story because BFFL goes on and on about how a KJ who doesn't oblige him "doesn't want my business". To me, that's just an attempt to denigrate someones business decision. When I had tanning beds, I wanted. NO NEEDED, every customer I could get. The fact that I didn't have the requested equipment, contrary to what Bruce might say, DID NOT mean I did not want the requestor's business. The fact that I tried to entice them into using my equipment reflected just how much I wanted their business. And my attempts to entice people to try my equipment was based upon several considerations:
1) I needed their business
2) I purchased great equipment that I knew would do the job, if given a chance
3) At a considerable expense, I bought the best bulbs and changed them more frequently than required (to keep them hot)
4) People usually select the equipment they prefer based upon emotional rather than rational motives... after trying my equipment and paying less to use it... most tanners agreed with my evaluation of what my equipment would do for them. But... if you must tan in a purple rocket ship... I could not accommodate you!

I disagree with that Eric. I have over 7,000 songs in my library, and I'd be amazed if I know more than one third of those songs. I don't have the time to listen to each of these songs on You Tube or I-Tunes, or whatever, so it would be very plausible for someone to select a song from my list (that was never ever sung at my show before), and I might not know that it has some language content in it until it's too late.... (but that wouldn't really be an issue for me, since I don't censor at my shows).

((sigh)) for every reason you say why you wouldn't, Eric, all I'm reminded of is that we're all different. Different personalities, policies, procedures, attitudes, and approaches to various situations.
I agree with Cueball... I've been blindsided by a pop song that was in my collection I'd not had the time to listen to, and at a family gig, some kid put it up. I looked up in shock as the first curse word came up and then the next... I faded it down quickly, and he looked up at me in surprise.
"Dude, you know BETTER!"
"It's in your own book!"
"Yeah, but even the RADIO edits those songs! You know the rules, no profanity!"
He grinned, shrugged, and handed me the mic. I handed it back and restarted the song. He finished without a problem.
Now I don't need to know WHY the kid did it, he knew the rules, just felt like he could. So I reminded him over the microphone the rules that EVERYONE agreed to play by. Even the kid's mom chastized him over it after the song was over...

I'm with Knightshow and cueball on this one. I have over 20,000 songs and even I don't know half of what I got as far as lyrics go. Yeah I have generalized some artist's stuff like eminim, banned at family shows but allowed at my bar.

Cueball does his special ones, so do I, so did this wonderful old lady named Jeri at my old hangout. She'd come up and do some RatPack songs off her Pocketsongs discs, and we'd sit there... amazed. It was like the era of when she was young was suddenly alive... like you could see her on the stage like Vaudeville while she crooned about life as it was.
There were some kids that rolled their eyes at her stuff, but she applauded heartily ALL songs, no matter if she liked them or not. She (God rest her dear soul) was an icon to us all, an inspiration, and one of the main reasons I stuck in this business!
And if she hadn't brought in her discs, who would EVER have know what would have happened?

Plus it's easy enough to say "we allow disks as long as there are no big scratches and no profanity".

Due to the fact that requsts for playing personal cd's are almost a thing of the past in this area Cabaret Karaoke might not be able to play your cd's. However if you plan to be in this area and want to attend our show let us know we will have the means. Also visit cabaret-karaoke.com, go to the song search for the data base and if we dont have a song of your choice please feel free to use the song request feature. We will try to have it for you. Thank You

Again.... about vulgarities.... I wasn't looking for "other" methods to prevent vulgarities from occurring and/or suggestions on how to respond if they did occur
Rather, I included the "problem" of vulgarities as just one of SEVERAL reasons why a KJ might not to want to play customers' discs, reasons that when considered in their aggregate may explain to disappointed singers why some of the shows don't play customers' disc!

okay, six pages later, and I give up. Some people will never understand, no matter how well you point it out. I'm perfectly willing to concede Ollie's point that it's a rarity in HIS area. (As I said before, there's a local guy that "CLAIMS" the same thing... he just won't do it, and uses it as an excuse not to haul in another player!)
In MY experiences in several cities, people brought in their own discs. I wasn't the ONLY one. Usually there'd be a table or two that had their own cdgs with them. Either one compilation disc or a few cdgs.
Whatever... I'm officially out of this dicussion. I don't enjoy the bruises on my forehead for banging on the old monitor. The new LCD ones aren't as formidable anyways!

BFFL
You're wrong about the overall costs to a KJ of adding the ability to play discs to their show. But those costs weren't the reason for my post about my tanning business. I had two reasons for that post. One was in response to your unfounded victim attitude... you never-ending "woe is me" statements that if a show doesn't play your discs they don't want you as a customer! And the fact that most business owners will bend over backwards to any reasonable customer's need/request and that a businessman that doesn't meet your expectations is not necessarily a bad businessperson as you like to allude to.
Though, I must say, the consensus among KJ's who are 100% digital and have participated in this thread seems to be that they don't care if you come to their shows or not --- in your inimitable way you have attacked so many of them.
And it's interesting to me how you do that. You attack them using circular reasoning which, in effect, goes like this.... "if you have a problem with me (BFFL's viewpoints) it because your show is probably 100% digital and... if your show is 100% digital... you probably have a problem with me! And in either case, I don't respect your business model!"
Well, BFFL, I am not 100% digital... I play discs: CDG's, DVD's and VCR's. And while you can't understand the viewpoints of KJ's who don't want to play customer's discs, I can.
And while I understand why singers like having their own disc, I have yet to be provided a rationale that I can understand as to why there are singers who cannot be happy with using songs from a reasonably decent catalog?
You have suggested that your reason for carrying your own discs is because you are a big Bruce Springsteen fan and need to sing his songs.
Quote: Most of my home made songs are Bruce Springsteen songs. It has nothing to do with MY EGO. It has EVERYTHING to do with the fact that I'm a BRUCE FAN. I don't just want to sing songs that I've heard. I want to sing the songs that I REALLY LIKE to hear.
Well, there are plenty of Elvis fans singing from our catalogs; Elton John fans singing from our catalogs; Billy Joel fans singing from our catalogs; Bon Jovi fans singing from our catalogs; Prince fans, etc.
So, pardon me, I still don't get it! I am not asking for a lot and the answer I am seeking may be very beneficial to me and other KJ's. Perhaps it would persuade those who are not playing discs to do so?
I am not trying to understand why people bring their own disc, which several people have posted about, but rather why there are people who cannot enjoy karaoke if they cannot sing from their own discs?
As some KJ's have noted, many of the tracks on those personal discs are in our catalogs. And as I have experienced, and already shared with the forum, I have had bad tracks come up on personal discs and immediately had to "jump" to the very same track in my catalog.
So, in short, I simply wonder why there are people who will leave a show that will not lay their discs even though the KJ could be the best in the world; the venue could be the best in the world; the sound and sound system could be the best in the world; the song catalog could be the best in the world?

Oh for CRYING out loud. I know I was said but there are statements here I just can't believe.
Quote: "And while I understand why singers like having their own disc, I have yet to be provided a rationale that I can understand as to why there are singers who cannot be happy with using songs from a reasonably decent catalog?" You can't understand that some people want to sing a SPECIFIC song? You can't understand that some people aren't COMFORTABLE singing just ANY version of a song you may happen to have? Again, it's NOT about YOU... it's about THE CUSTOMERS! Quote: So, in short, I simply wonder why there are people who will leave a show that will not lay their discs even though the KJ could be the best in the world; the venue could be the best in the world; the sound and sound system could be the best in the world; the song catalog could be the best in the world? you're talking about SUBJECTIVE terms. Subjective in the EYE of the BEHOLDER.
Again, it's ego... pure and simple!

Search my list for Springsteen. The is one idd as THM. Most of the others are SC. If you have one that is not listed what is it? What version or songs are on your cd's that you take to shows? I also have some UK versions.

Just to add my $.02 - I think most "digital" KJ's (myself included) would add the ability to play customer CDG' s if they saw a real need to . Just makes GOOD business sense. If I had Xamount singers every week requesting to play cdgs - I would ..no questions asked ( I have a player no BIG DEAL)
But I have yet to have that, the MAJORITY of the singers seem to be more than satisfied with my selection etc. I would not ADD a player for one singer, as I said I would try to accomodate their specific needs "digitally" by either purchasing or adding to my hardrive. ON the same token , if a SINGER likes all other aspects of the show why not just offer to the KJ ---mp3+g files of your favorites ??? ( save me the legalities issues) ...WHY BOYCOTT a great show otherwise?
There is a SINGER/KJ relationship missing somewhere - The term REGULAR is missing. If you're a singer that FLOATS between shows without LOYALTY..how can the KJ show any LOYALTY back ?... Good Business

I have singers at my show I have known for 15 years. Everybody here is friends. If a stranger comes in they usually become part of the group.
I have visited venues in large cities and it was the same. If somebody here came to greeley I would find a cd player or go home and get one if it was a big deal. That is when you quit playing Jerry Springer...

Matt:
So, you saying it is because of the singers' egos that they will not enjoy themselves if they can't use their own discs?
It's interesting how many times people let their egos keep them from enjoying life!

First I must state that I am computer based, AND have a player for customers cdgs.
Having said that, I agree with Jam about the hosts who are not using players also. The way I look at it is just as if you have a handicapped person situation. You make what is called a REASONABLE ACCOMODATION. Which is what Jam discribed. Maybe you have the same song in your library, or IF it can be purchased, you get it for the next time, OR if it's a SPECIAL CDG, you ask the (handicapped) person if they can give you a mp3+g file for addition to your library. These are 3 REASONABLE ACCOMODATIONS that as a business person you have offered. You can't possibly have the perfect solution for ALL of society's problems, BUT if you make some kind of effort, you're doing more than MOST.
My 2 cents.

But it doesn't prevent a person singing a "clean" song to add profanity. Once a singer gets a mic, there's not much a host can do to stop it. Once it's said, you can mute the mic, but the horse has left the barn.
Of course the horse that just left the barn is out looking for the flogged, dead horse.
